ECONOMY, HEALTHCARE HURT UDALL IN COLORADO RACE, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS; SEN. RAND PAUL LEADS 2016 PRESIDENTIAL PACK
The economy and healthcare, listed by Colorado voters as top issues in this years U.S. Senate race, could be the mountains which Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Udall must climb, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Sen. Udall gets 45 percent to 44 percent for U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, his Republican challenger, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. The gender gap is wide as Udall leads 52 35 percent among women while Gardner leads 53 38 percent among men. Udall leads among Democrats 90 3 percent while Gardner takes Republicans 88 7 percent and gets 43 percent of independent voters to Udalls 41 percent. In an open-ended question, allowing for any answer, 16 percent of voters list the economy or jobs as the most important issue in deciding their U.S. Senate vote, and 14 percent list healthcare. No other issue comes close. Voters who list the economy back Gardner over Udall 53 40 percent and voters who cite health care back the Republican 57 36 percent. Colorado voters oppose the Affordable Care Act 59 37 percent, including 62 34 percent among independent voters. In a race that is both too close to call and one of the prime targets for Republicans trying to take back the Senate, Colorado Sen. Mark Udall might best focus on one predominant concern the economy, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll. Voters have a mixed outlook on the economy as 60 percent say the states economy is excellent or good, while 39 percent say not so good or poor. -more-

Quinnipiac University Poll/April 24, 2014 page 2 At the same time, only 26 percent of voters say the nations economy is excellent or good, while 73 percent say not so good or poor. Colorado voters are divided 42 42 percent in their approval of the job Udall is doing as a U.S. Senator and say 46 40 percent he does not deserve to be reelected. The incumbent gets a 43 38 percent favorability rating, compared to Gardners 30 18 percent score. But 50 percent of voters dont know enough about Gardner to form an opinion. 2016 Presidential Race U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is the strongest candidate in Colorado in the 2016 presidential race, topping former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 48 43 percent. There is a huge gender gap as men back the Republican Paul 55 35 percent while women go with the Democrat Clinton 50 40 percent. Independent voters back Paul 48 37 percent. In other possible matchups: Clinton ties New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie 42 42 percent; Clinton leads former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush 45 40 percent; Clinton gets 45 percent to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabees 44 percent. Paul also has the highest favorability rating, 41 30 percent, edging Huckabees 37 30 percent favorability. Clinton gets a divided 48 47 percent favorability, with Christie tilting slightly negative at 35 38 percent and Bush getting a negative 29 40 percent score. The road to the White House has many twists and turns, but right now, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is the man to beat in Colorado, Malloy said. Colorado voters disapprove 59 38 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing. Disapproval is 95 5 percent among Republicans and 65 32 percent among independent voters, while Democrats approve 83 12 percent. Disapproval is 65 32 percent among men and 54 44 percent among women. Voters disapprove 60 37 percent of the way President Obama is handling the economy and disapprove 60 36 percent of the way he is handling foreign policy. From April 15 21, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,298 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
