Sum m er is already upon us! For many people, summer means fun in the sun. The kids are out of school, adults are going on v acations and it's time for outdoor activ ities like riding bikes and hosting barbecues and much more. It may be tempting to let y our guard down on v acation, but y ou can hav e fun and stay healthy away from home and take y our healthy lifesty le with y ou. As y our family plans quality time together, incorporate y our regular healthy habits into y our summer - or take adv antage of the time to start new ones. Sum m er Infections and Conditions There are many infections that are more common in the summer and can cause sy mptoms. As y ou set about y our summer activ ities, doctors urge y ou to take precautions to make sure y our ey es are safe. The most insidious ey e injuries can come from the summer's main attraction -- the sun. Ultrav iolet ray s can cause sunburned corneas, cancer of the ey elid, and increased risk of ey e diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. T rav el Health Preparing for a trip and v acations takes planning and time. Proper planning is the best way to stay healthy during y our trip. According to Healthwise Incorporated, a nonprofit organization, y ou should see a doctor at least 6 weeks before y ou go so that y ou'll hav e time for immunizations and other health precautions y ou may need to take in adv ance. There are sev eral factors to consider in preparing for a trip. Y our indiv idual health needs such as if y ou hav e any chronic diseases or other health concerns, such as allergies, birth control or other medications, see y our doctor. Y ou may need to adjust y our itinerary to accommodate y our health needs. For ex ample, if y ou hav e heart failure or a history of blood clots, y ou may need to take shorter flights with more stops to av oid long periods of sitting. If y ou hav e asthma, chronic obstructiv e pulmonary disease (COPD), or other lung diseases, y ou may need to av oid stay s in polluted cities or at high altitudes. Ev aluate whether y ou will be phy sically able to meet the rigors of y our particular trip. Most trav el ty pically demands more phy sical effort than is required at home. Boost y our fitness by starting an ex ercise program, such as walking, in adv ance. If y ou hav e health problems, carry a letter from y ou doctor describing y our conditions, a list of y our routine medications including their generic names, and written prescriptions for refills if y ou will be gone long. If y ou hav e diabetes, y ou can take precautions to prev ent problems while trav eling. Trav el can make it hard to keep y our blood sugar within a safe range because of changes in time zones, meal schedules, and ty pes of foods av ailable. Check y our blood sugar lev el more often during y our time away from home. When trav eling, take ex tra diabetes pills and insulin supplies. Y ou may not find y our regular supplies wherev er y ou trav el. Double y our normal amount of needed supplies for short trips. For long trips, hav e enough ex tra supplies to last for 2 weeks more than the length of y our trip. To keep y our blood sugar lev el, try to eat and take y our medicine as close to y our usual schedule as y ou can. Many doctors recommend that y ou take a first aid kit with items such as pain reliev ers, sunscreen, antifungal and antibacterial ointments, and anti-diarrhea medications, especially if y ou will be trav eling to areas where modern medical care is not readily av ailable. Preparing for health risks while trav eling is especially important if y ou are v isiting other countries and areas, such as those in parts of Africa and Asia and many parts of South and Central America, where ex pert medical care may not be readily av ailable. Before y ou go, y ou should be aware of any needed immunizations or medications, disease outbreaks, food and water precautions, and any other prev entiv e measures to take. Check y our local or state health clinic at least 6 weeks before trav eling so that y ou'll hav e time for immunizations and other health precautions that may need to done in adv ance. Make sure all of y our routine immunizations are up to date for y ou and y our family . These immunizations can protect y ou from diseases such as polio, diphtheria, measles, and rubella that hav e been v irtually wiped out in dev eloped nations but are still prev alent in some dev eloping countries. If y ou will be trav eling to a country where these infections are still common, check y our immunity status. Some adults hav e not receiv ed all of these v accines (especially measles, mumps, and rubella) and may be susceptible unless they hav e had the disease. Tetanus immunization should be updated before trav eling if y ou hav en't receiv ed one in the last 1 0 y ears. Hepatitis A is the most widely reported disease in return trav elers that can be prev ented by a v accine. Y ou can help protect y ourself from hepatitis A while trav eling by taking basic precautions such as boiling y our drinking water, making sure food is well-cooked, and eating only raw fruits and v egetables that y ou hav e washed and peeled. Malaria-risk areas of the world include large areas of Central and South America, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and many South Pacific islands. Y ou may need to take one of sev eral different prev entiv e medications depending upon the ty pe of mosquito inhabiting that part of the world. These medications need to be taken daily during y our trav els and for a specified time after return. Medical care in dev eloping countries can be below standard. Remember, infants and toddlers can become dehy drated much more easily than adults, so be sure they get lots of liquids. Plus, don't forget to take y our inhaler or other medication when y ou go out. Wear appropriate shoes for y our outdoor activ ities. If y ou're doing a lot of walking or other sports activ ities, skip those sty lish summer sandals. Av oid blisters and sprains by choosing a good pair of walking shoes. Consume alcohol in moderation, and don't drink at all near the time that y ou may be driv ing. If y ou are trav eling by air, put prescription drugs in y our carry -on bag, not y our checked luggage. Trav elers and their baggage are sometimes parted, and it may be dangerous to skip ev en one dose. It is particularly important to bring medicines with y ou if y ou are trav eling abroad. Drug names, doses, and av ailability differ in different countries, and in some parts of the world, drug safety and effectiv eness may not be up to U.S. standards. Check the labels on y our medicines for the possibility that they might increase y our sensitiv ity to sun and/or heat. Don't store medicines in the trunk or glov e compartment of y our car or take them to the beach unless y ou will need them there. High heat and humidity can alter the potency of many drugs.
