Climate Change
For those that do not know what global warming is, when we emit greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Chlorofluorocarbons, it cause the planet to trap more heat (Marshak). Water vapor is actually the most common greenhouse gas and its what is maintaining Earths base temperature in this geologic age. We are releasing the other greenhouse gases through burning fossil fuels (Marshak).

Fossil fuels are burned in two different forms in great abundance here in America. These two being coal and oil. Coal originates from the compression of dead plant material from large swamp bodies that existed millions of years ago (Marshak). Most of the coal on Earth today formed from two main eras of time. The first being the Carboniferous, which took place 300 million years ago, and the second being the cretaceous, which took place 80 million years ago (Marshak). In a sense, when we burn coal, we are burning ancient star light captured from prehistoric plants. The United States has so much coal, that at our current rates of consumption, America can burn coal for the next 12 centuries (Marshak). Oil forms from a different process, where plankton and dead sea micro-organisms build up and are transformed by pressure and time into unprocessed oil (Marshak). America has passed peak oil and imports large quantities to support its economy.

The Effects
As we continue to burn these fuels, we will begin to notice major changes in Earths ecosystems. There is actually 30 percent more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now, than there was 150 years ago according to ice samples. In humanities 400,000 year existence, we have never lived in an atmosphere like this (Seymour).

Politics
We burn a lot of fossil fuels for a few reasons. One, its widely accessible and easy to do. And two, it has deep roots in politics. When President Bush became president, he gave big oil behemoths like Exxon Mobil, Conoco, Shell Oil, BP America and Chevron huge tax

cuts and subsidies (Mayer). In terms of lobbying, the oil industry is in the top nine in lobbying expenditures. Bush received more from the oil and gas industry than any other politician (Mayer). He signed a bill in congress that gave them more than 14.5 billion dollars in tax breaks. In 2005, The Energy Policy Act rolled back regulations the oil industry considered burdensome, including exemptions from clean water laws (Mayer). Money seems to be the driving goal, and the environment has been given little to no attention.
