WRAP A SMILE FOR ROTAPLAST

Sheila Hart will wrap up the Wrap A Smile campaign, to collect quilts for Rotaplast (Rotary Plastic Surgeons), at the end of April. She expects many quilts from Guilds in attendance at the West Kootenay Conference and will also be picking up quilts in Cranbrook and Kimberley; Invermere and Fernie are also contributing. Each child in a third world country that receives surgery for cleft palate repairs or burn reconstruction done by a Rotaplast team, receives a quilt. These quilts not only become prized possessions, but they are also a critical part of medical supplies. Frequently the hospitals have little or no linen, so the quilts keep the children warm during and after surgery. Prior to the formation of Wrap-A-Smile, the children were wrapped in plastic sheets. Sheila was thrilled to read an article about Terry Hodskins, founder of Wrap A Smile in Quilt Life magazine. Since 1987, Terry has seen 19,000 quilts collected, enough to cover 5 football fields.

Irene Evanoff has been a member of the Kootenay Quilters Guild since 1979; its second year of existence. She remembers well, the influence that Sue Lambrecht had on her development as a quilter. This was of course, in addition to the role that her Grandmother had who laboured by hand to make quilts. Irene has had brief times away from Nelson, when she accompanied her husband on his moves to Kitimat, Gibsons, Sault St. Marie and Indonesia. Irene also remembers when she and Karen Makive started the Night Group in 1990. The quilters were known as the Ladies of the Evening. This group formed because Irene and Karen both had day jobs and could not attend the regular meetings. They started to meet in various quilters homes and eventually moved into an empty space in the Mall. If anyone ever wondered where Irene gets her creativity to make the marvelous Raffle Baskets for the Kootenay Quilters Guild shows, it comes from her sojourn into the business world, when she owned the Whats Happening Store. This was a Wedding and Party Rental Store. Irene made many costumes for the store Some of the wedding props that she and her husband Fred, made are still being used. Irene likes everything about quilting. She cannot cite a particular pattern as a favorite. She has utilized many in the course of making quilts for everyone in her family. She intends to keep quilting and hopes to have a couple of full sized quilts ready for the Guilds next show; one Barcello and one Stack and Wack made with a Japanese print. Irene is never without something to do. She was instrumental in getting the Kootenay-Columbia Seniors Housing Co-op created. After 7 years of service as President, she no longer sits on the Board. She is pleased that 50 houses and duplexes have been created and that more will be built in the future. She hopes that eventually a care facility will also be on the site, so that seniors can age in place. She currently is known as the borscht lady as she cooks for the church run Food Program in Castlegar. Her skills in cooking were honed while cooking in commercial establishments such as the Kootenay Cattle Company. Irene was involved with the Nelson Chamber of Commerce for many years. She was always involved with volunteering at the schools that her kids attended and she also liked to curl. Thanks for continuing to be a member of the Kootenay Quilters Guild, Irene!

ART GROUP THREAD PLAY

On Feb 13, the Art Quilt Group met to practice their thread painting. Laura used a pattern for the spools of thread, and practiced embellishing with stitching. Heather took a hand-painted garden image and made it come to life with thread.

Gloria attempted to create a landscape scene totally with thread.

PORTRAIT QUILTS
On April 11 the Art Quilt Group met to focus on a style of portrait making. Gloria and Laura followed the lesson plan, while Heather went off on her own tangent and produced a wonderful portrait of her dog!

ART GROUP ZENTANGLES

Zentangle is a fancy word for doodling with a purpose. We had a record turnout of 7 people! It was a wonderful inspiring session!
