Rewriting Frankenstein
Why are we the way we are and how can we be responsible for ourselves?
Pick one of the following scenes from the play. Think about how the situation affected the Monster. Think about how if the scene unfolded differently, the Monster may have changed. Rewrite one of the following to show how they would have impacted the Monster and his choices in life if the situation had been different. 1. 2. 3. 4. What is the situation in the scene? What do others do to the Monster? The situation is when Agathe is talking to Felix. The Monster is begging for help from Agathe and then Felix comes back home. He thinks the Monster is attacking Felix, and Agathe tries to stop him, but Felix doesnt listen to her and shoots the Monster. The Monster is furious and wants revenge, because no matter how much he wants to love people, they always treat him with violence and hate.

How does this affect the Monster? What impact does it have on his life? What choices does he make as a result? This affects the Monster by making him think that all humans just want evil. Then he wants revenge because no one will accept and return his love, and they just treat him with horror and violence and hate and dont try to understand him. The choices that he makes as a result are that he turns evil and wants revenge, he runs away, and he returns to Frankenstein.

The scene will change by them going outside in the forest. Then Felix shoots as soon as Agathe goes in front The Monster will want to love and feel bad for Agathe but of the Monster. She faints, and Felix turns pale and sees humans will even hurt other humans as well as him and what he did. He drops to his knees, and the Monster is will think that they are all evil. He also may delay his visit horrified. He then screams at Felix and tells him that he to Frankenstein because of Agathe. However, he will be is a destroyer. A villager sees Felix shooting Agathe and relieved that Felix is being arrested because he is a comes to arrest him. Then the Monster takes Agathe and destroyer. He will want to go to get Agathe help but will runs away. not know where to go.

A Note On Staging The scene is taking place first in a small cabin with no windows. There is a table with an apple and a torn loaf of bread. There is a musket resting against the wall. The room is moderately lit. After, the scene is in a forest at sunset. There are a lot of trees and shadows, and it is difficult to see. The Monster is wearing dirty, torn, bloodied clothing. Agathe is wearing a simple cotton dress and Felix is wearing a collared shirt and pants. Characters Monster - A hideous looking creature that resembles a human. He looks at the world with wonder and love, but is lonely because everyone he meets treats him with horror. Agathe A young woman who is blind but still knows her surroundings well. She is kind, gentle and doesnt judge others. Felix A young man who is protective, brave, and acts on instinct. He lives with Agathe. Villager A man from the nearby village that Felix and Agathe get their supplies from.

The Monster Begs for Help -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Felix opens the door and sees the Monster. Felix: (gasps) Agathe! Get back! Agathe: Wait, Felix! Let me explain Monster: Tell him! Felix charges at the Monster but he easily steps aside. Agathe grabs Felixs shirt but he pulls away. Monster: Please listen! I want to help you, want to love-

Felix: If you dont get out of here now Agathe: He just wants to help us, Felix. He is rejected and hurt by everyone he comes to. We should understand out of all people, because we were treated the same way! Felix: You dont understand, Agathe! He is a monster! Felix picks up the musket and aims at the Monster. The Monster puts his hands in front of his face. Monster: Please I am good. Dont hurt me like other men. I am lonely. Agathe: (screams) Dont shoot, Felix! Agathe pushes the Monster out of the door. Agathe: Run! Felix: What are you thinking, Agathe?! That monster will hurt other people! Felix runs out the door with the musket. Agathe follows. Felix: Where are you, coward? Agathe runs off. A shadow appears next to a tree. Felix points his gun at it. Felix: Die, vile creature! Felix shoots and a gunshot noise fills the stage. But as he does, Agathe gets in front of the Monster and gets the bullet in her arm. She screams and faints. The Monster and Felix turn pale and a villager appears out of the trees. Monster: No Villager: What happened here? Monster: What have you done, man? You want to destroy? Her eyes are hurt you need to hurt her arm, too? If you didnt try to shoot me, this would not happen. Felix trembles and collapses to the ground. The Monster gently picks up Agathes body. Felix: (whispers) What have I done? Villager: Accident or not, you are arrested for shooting this woman. Please come with me.

Felix gets up, his eyes empty. He looks at the Monster with hate, then the villager, and then Agathe. He walks over to her and the Monster and touches her cheek. Monster: Dont touch her. Felix: Dont take her! Shes not yours! Monster: Be silent. Now, she is not yours too. I will protect her, and you did not. Felix: She took the bullet instead of you! Do you call that protection? As if you will do anything for Agathe! How dare you say something like that The Villager jerks Felix away. Villager: Lets go. Felix: You The Monsters eyes are cold as he watches Felix and the villager walk off. Monster: Do not worry, Agathe. I will help you. I will do what the man has not. But where do I go? The humans will hurt me with dogs and knives. Where do I go, Agathe? The Monster runs off.
