Olivia Allen Padgett ENGL 1102 February 24, 2014 Annotated Bibliography Social Networking and the Younger

Generation Proposed Thesis: Does social networking sites have greater benefits or negative effects on the younger generation and their developing minds? Wilson, Kathryn, Stephanie Fornasier, and Katherine M. White. "Psychological Predictors of Young Adults' Use of Social Networking Sites." Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. 13.2 (2010): 173-177. Print. Wilson, Fornasier, and White begins the article talking about social networking and stating how much more popular social networking seems to be with the younger generation. The interesting thing is that Wilson brings in the five traits that are thought to make up each and every personality. Studies showed correlations between similar personality traits and the amount of social networking that is used for that person. The studies explained in the article have interesting points that show the relationship between high levels of social networking use and personality downfalls like low self esteem, anxiety, and even depression in some cases. The findings shown in the article from all the studies are really interesting to see how much of an impact there is on the younger people from the use of the social networking sites. Those connections that are made in the article are what make it a good source of information to use. It does not have much opinion at all and mainly states the facts and results from the studies done about personality and social networking. Although, all of the facts stated were

negative towards social networking, which may suggest that not all facts were said, like any that would be positive towards social networking. Which would make the article biased in that case but there is not really any way to tell.

Chang, Tsung-Sheng, and Wei-Hung Hsiao. "Time Spent on Social Networking Sites: Understanding User Behavior and Social Capital." Systems Research and Behavioral Science. 31.1 (2014): 102-114. Print. This is an article that is mainly focusing on who uses social networking sites, what do they use them for, and partly the effect of the usage. It was really great to be able to get an idea of who is using social networking the most and what do they use it for. As well as what different age groups use social networking sites for and the amount. This article is a good source to start out with my research because it would be good to have the information on the usages before I get into the effects of that use.

Blomfield, Neira C. J, and Bonnie L. Barber. "Social Networking Site Use: Linked to Adolescents' Social Self-Concept, Self-Esteem, and Depressed Mood." Australian Journal of Psychology. 66.1 (2014): 56-64. Print. This article also begins with the explanation of social networking sites and introducing the fact that the use may be associated with indicators of adjustment. It also begins with showing the amount that social networking sites, mainly facebook and twitter, are used and the amount different age groups use it. A great point is made early in the article that these sites allow youth to present a kind of social resume and greater time spent on Facebook was positively associated with having the perception that other people are happier and have better lives. The social networking sites provide youth with an area of great social

comparison, which, in most cases, provides these youth with lower levels of self esteem when they see people with what seem to be happier lives than their own. The article then brings in the indicators of adjustment that seem to be linked based on the studies like social self-concept, depressed mood, and self-esteem. The results of the studies showed positive correlations between the indicators of adjustment and the amount of social networking site use. Like the previous sources, although, the results also gave a negative reputation towards social networking and which also begs the question that anything that would show positive benefits of social networking. But, the source is a good source in having a good amount of information and statistical facts to utilize.

Livingstone, Sonia, Kjartan lafsson, and Elisabeth Staksrud. "Risky Social Networking Practices Among underage Users: Lessons for Evidence-Based Policy." Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. 18.3 (2013): 303-320. Print. Livingstone, lafsson, and Staksrud throw an intriguing point into the mix with the idea of underage people using social networking sites. Underage meaning kids under the age of thirteen and minors being those under the age of eighteen. The ideas brought up in their argument is whether these underage kids should even be allowed to be on social networking sites, if minors should be regulated while using them, and what are the risks of these young people using these sites. The work from the studies done ask children about their age, amount of time spent with social networking sites, their awareness of the safety precautions that should be taken when using these sites, and their digital literacy. This source is a good source that has a greater focus on the younger generation, but instead of it

having much information on the effects the social networking use it has on them, it has more of a focus on what they use the social networking for and if they really know what the repercussions could come from it.

Park, Bu K, and Christina Calamaro. "A Systematic Review of Social Networking Sites: Innovative Platforms for Health Research Targeting Adolescents and Young Adults." Journal of Nursing Scholarship. 45.3 (2013): 256-264. Print. This article focused its research on social network users between the ages of 13 and 25, and looked at how social networking sites can be beneficial to adolescents because of the sites are a great source for almost any kind of information. It focuses on it being a cost-effective way to get information on health topics for adolescents that may not always have the money to go see a doctor, so they can receive at home care from the comfort of their computer. This source had a different type of information than the other sources, which was good to have something different to refer to. But, did not add much to my argument like the others did.
