Lesson -6

Snap shot of a Dog

Summary

J ames thurber came across a dim photograph of the pet dog which had died twenty five years before. It had given an account
of his childhood days spent with his brothers. The author and his two brothers tamed a dog which was an 'American' bull terrier. Its name was rex. It had a brindle eye that some times made it look like a clown and some times reminded us of a politician with derby hat and cigar. The dog was big and mucular and beautifully made. It never lost dignity, even when trying to accomplish the extravagant task, the author and his brothers used set for it. Rex was a tremendous fighter. Though it came from a line of fighters it never started fights. It never went for other dog's throat but for one of its ears. It would then get its grip and hold on for hours. Once rex had a fight with a non -descript dog. It was a Homeric fight. To separate those two dogs, finally the fire department had to be sent for. After that fight some of the relatives of the author looked upon the incident as a blot on the family name. They insisted that they should get rid of rex. But the author and his brothers were not prepared to do so. They had, at any time never experienced any problem with Rex. During its strenuous years of life it never bit a person but growled at prowlers. Rex had a gentle disposition. It killed cats quickly and neatly without any malice. It neither killed nor chased squirrels. Rex had its own philosophy. It never ran barking after wagons and automoblies. Swimming was Rex's favorite recreation. It was taken once to Alum creek for swimming. It was fun to see Rex battle upstream against a stiff current struggling and growling every foot of the way. Rex brought any thing thrown into the water. One night rex brought a small chest of drawers that was found some where. It was just an old cheap piece that somebody had abandoned on a trash heap. In order to test its mettle it dragged the chest without drawers all the way. It came home and was struggling to pull it on to the porch. The author and his brothers woke up and helped it in its attempts. The brothers carted the chest miles away and threw it out. If they had thrown it out in a nearby alley, Rex would have brought it home again, as a small token of its integrity. Though Rex had no former training it was capable of jumping fences of six feet easily. It would never give up trying even if the task entrusted to it was a difficult one. One afternoon Rex came home after taking a terrible beating, probably from the owner of some dog he had got into a fight with. His head and body were scarred. It was about to die. But it fought with the angel of death for more than an hour. Rex licked the hands of two of its masters. The third one was not present. It waited for the arrival of the third master for one hour. The person for whom Rex was waiting came, Rex walked a few wabbly paces towards him, touched his hand with its muzzle and fell down dead.

Poem-3

Snake
Summary
he beautiful poem 'The Snake' was written by David Herbert Lawrence. One hot day the poet came to the water tank to take water. He had to wait because a snake was already drinking water there. The Snake was golden in colour. The poet watched the snake for a long time. The snake came there from the burning bowels of the earth. He drank water slowly when the poet was watching quietly. His voice of education asked him to kill the Snake because golden Snakes are poisonous. The poet had different feelings such as cowardvice, perversity, humility and honour towards the snake. The voice of education of the poet criticized him for not killing the snake. When the snake had his fill and returned his conscience provoked him to kill the snake. When the snake entered the hole, the poet threw a log at the snake. The log hit the snake and it writhed in pain and disappeared very quickly The poet thought that it was a paultry, vulgar and meanact. He cursed himself for throwing the log. He regretted his mean act and wanted the snake to return to receive his hospitality. He thought that he had missed the chance of showing nobility towards the snake.
