Please record your Name on your homework! 1. Application and Polymer a. Find one product that is made of PE and explain why PE is chosen for this product. b. Find one product that is made of PP and explain why PP is chosen for this product. c. Find one product that is made of PVC and explain why PVC is chosen for this product. d. Find one product that is made of PS and explain why PS is chosen for this product. 2. (Crawford,3rd, 2.1)

Hint: You can consider this problem as a stiffness-limited design at minimum mass. Assume the beam has a square cross section. The length is specified and the cross section area can be changed. You will need to derive the material index to compare.

4. A cross-linked polymer is found to be accurately represented with three Maxwell models connected in parallel. The spring and dash pot elements of these Maxwell models are given by 1 = 2 = 3 = 100 kPa and relaxation times by 1 = 10 s; 2 = 100 s and 3 = (infinity). a) What is the stress required to elongate a test sample made of this material to three times its initial length by the stress applied at time t = 0 ? b) What will the stress be 100 seconds after imposing the 200% elongation?

a) What is the initial stress 0 in the material immediately after a strain 0 is imposed? b) How does the stress t vary with time if the strain imposed 0 is maintained constant?

6. Part of a meter valve mechanism will consist of a rectangular cantilever beam spring injection-molded in acetal. The free end will be held at a constant deflection in order to maintain a moment of at least 0.5 Nm over a period of 3 years at a temperature of 45 C. The depth of the beam has already been fixed for reasons of space at 5 mm. Taking the design strain limit as 0.01 (or 1%), calculate the minimum width of the beam. At 45 C, the creep of an acetal polymer is given by: 1.8 104 (1.3 t 0.1 ) 107 t1/3 sinh(0.38 ) Where is percentage strain, stress is in , and is in seconds. Note: Stress in MPa and time in seconds. End loaded rectangular cantilever: max Second moment: I
