Word Cards Description: Word cards can be used to help students remember words which they already know the meaning. To create word cards, students will write the English word on one side of the card and the definition, picture, or translation on the other side. Teachers can have students create word cards after learning about a specific set of vocabulary to help them remember the new vocabulary words. This can be used in any content areas such as math, science, social studies, etc. In math, teachers can have students write word cards for the different geometric shapes and their descriptions. In science, teachers can have students write about the different body parts or life cycle of a plant to help them remember. If students are learning about the different branches in the government, teachers can have them create word cards to help them remember the different branches in the government. I would have my students create their own word cards in class and then have them practice on their own at first. After they know the basic meaning of the words, I can have them do a word sort with a partner or as a group. By allowing them to quiz each other or play a word sorting game, it can help them memorize the words better as well as help develop L2 acquisition through group work. Rationale: Word cards can be very helpful for ELLs because it helps them learn new words as well as remembers words they already know. It can help them learn and remember general high-frequency words and specific content area vocabulary. Word cards can be used at any grade level as well. Word cards can help develop fluency with words and it is a great way to help them study for a spelling test. Students can create their own word cards at school or at home. It is a great learning strategy to help ESL remember the meaning of a word as well as

learn new words. Students can refer back to their word cards if they forget a meaning to a word or forget how to spell a word. 2. Language Wheels Description: Language wheels can help intermediate level ELLs learn new vocabulary words and meaning. Language wheels help students learn about adjective, verb conjugations, adjectives, and adverb forms. As a teacher, I would have my students create a language wheel when we learn about verbs, adverbs, and verb conjugations. If I am teaching them various conjugated forms, I will have the word sing and underneath it will be sang, has sung, and sing. Each student will create their own language wheel so they can learn the different verb conjugations, adverbs, or adjectives. Language wheel can be very helpful in language arts because they can learn about the different grammar forms as well as help them in their writing. I would implement this language wheel in language arts and have them refer to the language wheel when writing a narrative or short stories. They can learn how to apply adjectives to their writing and it will also help them remember what adjectives are or what adverbs look like by looking at the language wheel. It can also be used in math as wheel. The teachers can write different math terms and have a description or picture of what it looks like on the wheel. Rationale: Language wheels can be helpful for ELLs because they can use the wheel to not only help them learn new vocabulary words but also learn about different grammar forms. ELLs can use this wheel to help them remember what adjectives looks like or how to write adverbs. The language wheel helps ELLs develop better writing skills because the language wheel can be used as a writing tool when they write narratives or essays. When students

develop their writing skills, they will also develop their reading skills as well. When teachers go over the words in the language wheel, ELLs can hear how each words are pronounce and the how to say it correctly. Language wheel is a great reference tool that students can have and can refer too. 3. Word Wall Dictionary Description: Word wall dictionary can help beginning students learn new vocabulary words and it is a great way to review as well. Teachers can create a word wall dictionary for any content area. They can use new math vocabulary words in their word wall dictionary or use spelling words in language arts. A word wall dictionary is when the teachers write the different vocabulary on the white board and have a short description or picture underneath the word. This is a great way for students to understand each word. As a teacher, every morning, I will have my students go over the word wall dictionary and make sure they all understand and remember the new vocabulary words we are learning for that week or for that unit. I will include a picture for each word as well as a short description to make sure they understand the word. By providing a short description or definition of the words, it can help ELLs understand how to use the word correctly in their writing. Rationale: Word wall dictionary can help ELLs learn the meaning of new vocabulary words and help them remember the newly acquired words. The teachers can go over each word and its meaning on a daily basis to help them remember the words. ELLs can gradually learn new words after multiple exposures to a word over time. Expanding word walls can help with emergent literacy for ELLs. It can also be used to demonstrate ABC order in finding words

in dictionaries. It is also a great way to review any old vocabulary words that they might have forgotten. Word wall dictionary is great in any grade level as well.
