Value in Form
Students are to develop four separate studies of various types of objects, while avoiding lines in order to create the illusion of three-dimensional form, and then expand upon one study for further exploration. Students will understand the compositional techniques of altering the size, placement, and point of view.

VA1: Media, Techniques, and Processes: The student demonstrates understanding and can apply media, techniques, and processes. VA1a: The student demonstrates increasing proficiency in the production of twoand three-dimensional art forms by using a variety of materials and advanced technology. VA1c: The student uses and explains how media, technological tools, techniques, and processes are used to solve visual art problems. VA1d: The student uses art materials and tools, including technology, in a safe and responsible manner. VA2: Structures and Functions: The student demonstrates knowledge of structures and functions.

Warm-Up

Materials needed: One 18x12 piece of newsprint drawing paper. Charcoal (any type/your choice). Basic Form - Separate Lay the paper flat on the table and its orientation will be landscape. Bring the left side of the paper over to the right, folding it in half. Open it up. On one side of the fold, draw four basic forms separately. Use charcoal to shade each form. Do not include cast shadows. For this warm-up, as well as any study in this assignment, you may lightly sketch the forms in 2H pencil first before moving onto charcoal, if you wish. After you complete this study, close/fold it back in half to protect your charcoal drawing. You will complete the thumbnail sketches, required in the following studies, on the outside of this folded paper.

Set-Up

Materials needed: One 24x18 piece of white drawing paper. One 2H drawing pencil. A ruler at least 18 long. 1 wide masking tape. The orientation of the drawing paper for this Value in Form project is landscape. With your pencil, place small tick marks on each side at the halfway point. With a ruler, connect the tick marks that are opposite each other. Center a piece of masking tape over your lines. This will divide your paper into four quadrants. Please only use the exact amount of masking tape you need measure!
Make a 9 and 12 tick mark on their corresponding sides. Masking Tape

Connect the tick marks that are across from each other.

Before the start of each drawing study below, complete at least three thumbnail sketches on the newsprint paper (at least 15; use the same paper you used for the warm-up). The thumbnail sketches will help you plan the major features of your composition including where the object(s) will be placed, and where the horizon (table) will be. Experiment with different perspectives and compositions. Remember, thumbnail sketches are small, but should be the same proportion as the big drawings. Study 1
Q1 :

Materials needed: Your 24x18 piece of white drawing paper that you divided into four quadrants. A 2H drawing pencil, charcoal (any type), Q-Tips and/or tissues for blending. Basic Form Still Life Set up a still life of the basic forms. Complete your thumbnail sketches; choose the best composition. In Quadrant I, you will draw and shade all basic forms together, in one still life. Include cast shadows. Do not draw from your imagination. Use your right side of your braindraw what you see!

Study 2
Q2

Materials needed: Your 24x18 piece of white drawing paper that you divided into four quadrants. A 2H drawing pencil, charcoal (any type), Q-Tips and/or tissues for blending. Cloth Soft Edges Create soft edges and graduate value changes by positioning a cloth folded, gathered, creases or bunched onto a cardboard and staple or glue onto position. Complete your thumbnail sketches; choose the best composition. In Quadrant II, shade using charcoal and use erasers for highlights. Include cast shadows.

Study 3

Q3 :

Materials needed: Your 24x18 piece of white drawing paper that you divided into four quadrants. A 2H drawing pencil, charcoal (any type), Q-Tips and/or tissues for blending. White Chalk (optional). Sharp Value Paper Bag Open a paper bag, and then crumple it some to make more lines and dramatic value changes. Complete your thumbnail sketches; choose the best composition. In Quadrant III, draw and shade the paper bag as it sits on the table. Include cast shadows and eliminate as many outlines as possible. This drawing should have strong contrast and highlights. You may use white chalk for highlights.

Study 4

Materials needed: Your 24x18 piece of white drawing paper that you divided into four quadrants. A 2H drawing pencil, charcoal (any type), Q-Tips and/or tissues for blending. White chalk. One to Two Card Board Boxes Erasure Drawing Create a still life of one to two cardboard boxes. Complete your thumbnail sketches; choose the best composition. Using your compressed charcoal, in Quadrant IV, cover the area with the flat, large side of the charcoal. Blend with a tissue; this is your medium value. Using your erasers for highlights and your charcoal for darker values, shade your drawing. Include cast shadows. Use white chalk for strong highlights.

Q4

Final Drawing Materials needed: One 18x12 piece of white drawing paper. A 2H drawing pencil, charcoal (any type), Q-Tips and/or tissues for blending. White chalk (optional). Your Choice! Choose one of the four studies that youd like to explore even further. You may use any or all of the techniques that weve practiced (regular drawing, erasure drawing, addition of white charcoal, etc). Set up a still life. Complete your thumbnail sketches; choose the best composition. Use the viewfinders to help you. Your drawing should have at least 6 values and incorporate all of the Principles of Shading including highlight, shade, shadow, reflected light, and back shading. Include cast shadows.

Rubric All drawings will be submitted only when youve finished all drawing assignments. Please protect your drawing and preserve your hard work! Attach a piece of newsprint to the front of your drawing, at the top with two small pieces of masking tape (like hinges of a door). The newsprint should be the same size as your drawings. Attach this rubric to your front of your drawings with a paperclip (do not staple!). Grade yourself from 1 to 10 points: 1 to 6 needs much improvement, 7 average, 8 to 9 good, 10 excellent! Warm-Up.
