Daily Lesson Plan

Teacher: Date: Ms. Hayes Time: Subject: Pre-Algebra: Sect. 4.5 Rules of Exponents Plan approved by: Grade: 7th

2/3/14

45 minutes

Behavioral Objective(s): 1. Students will be able to define the rules of exponents. 2. Students will discover rules for multiplying and dividing powers. 3. Students will be able to use the product and quotients of powers property to simplify expressions.

Pennsylvania State Academic Standard(s): A1.1.1.3.1 Simplify/evaluate expressions involving properties/laws of exponents, roots and/or absolute value to solve problems (exponents should be integers from -10 to 10). 2.5.A1.A: Develop a plan to analyze a problem, identify the information needed to solve the problem, carry out the plan, check whether an answer makes sense, and explain how the problem was solved in grade appropriate contexts. 2.1.A1.D: Use exponential, scientific, and calculator notation to represent any rational number. 2.2.A1.C: Evaluate numerical expressions that include the four basic operations and operations of powers and roots, reciprocals, opposites and absolute values.

Materials and/or Equipment: Math Book, Math Notebook, and Chalkboard, Rules of Exponent Booklet

Activities and Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Students will complete a daily exercise. After completing and reviewing the daily exercise, I will pass out the Rules of Exponent booklets that will be used for lessons 4.5 and 4.6. The students will begin by working in pairs on the Concept Activity in the booklet. I will have a blank version on the Elmo. Each group will help fill in a blank when reviewing the activity. Lesson Sequence: 1. To begin the lesson, I will explain that to use the Product and Quotient of Powers Properties each term MUST have the same base. I will explain by putting two examples on the board. Can these problems be simplified? Why? ( ) ( ) a) b) Next, I will introduce the Product of Powers Property. Students will flip to the page in their booklets. We will walk through the page together. a) The students will first work with several examples and recall their previous knowledge from the concept activity. b) Then, I will establish the general formula that can be used for finding the product of powers. c) After I complete the general formula, I will let the students work independently to see if they comprehended the product of powers property. d) Lastly, I will provide the students with 2 practice problems to complete on their individual white boards. i) ( )( ) ii) I will follow the procedure from a-c from the Products of Powers Property for the Quotient of Powers Property. a) Practice Problems i)

ii) 4. Lastly, the students can work in their pairs to solve a problem using both the product and quotient powers of property. a) Closure: I will ask the students to describe in their own words what happens to the powers when using the product and quotient rules. I want to hear the students say that you add the exponents when you multiply them and subtract the exponents when you divide them.
