Romeo and Juliet - Act 4 and 5 Organizer

Answer all questions on a separate piece of paper. Point- form is fine. Act Four
Scene 1 1. In this scene, Friar Laurence and Paris are discussing Paris and Juliets upcoming wedding! According to Paris, why has Capulet pushed ahead the date for the marriage: 2. Juliet arrives and is quite cool to the passionate Paris (poor schmuck). Identify one of her putdowns to Paris which seems to sail over his head. Why do you think that he doesnt see that she just isnt into him? 3. What eight things Juliet prepared to do rather than marry Paris? 4. Friar Laurence has a plan to resolve the problem. Outline his details, step by step. Scene Two 1. Capulet is still righteously angry at Juliet for going against his wishes. When she returns from Friar Laurence, she claims: Where I have learnd me to repent the sin / Of disobedient opposition/ To you and your behests/ Henceforward I am ever ruld by you. (Act 4, Scene 2, lines 17-22) What does she mean? 2. Juliet lets something slip about her plan. What is it? 3. What already known quality of Capulets is reinforced in this scene? Scene Three 1. It is the eve of Juliets wedding to Paris. How does she sever her ties with the Nurse? Why does she need to do this? Juliet finds herself alone in her room, ready to drink the potion. She foreshadows that the plan may result in disaster: I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins, That almost freezes up the heat of life. (lines 15-16) Juliet is clearly nervous. Scene Four It is dawn on the morning of the wedding. Paris has arrived with musicians (poor Paris!) to wake up his bride. The Nurse goes in to wake up Juliet. Scene Five 1, The Nurse bustles into Juliets bedroom to wake her up, chattering mindlessly as usual. What does she say about Paris that shows that she really doesnt take the Romeo wedding seriously? 3. 1/ 2/ 3/ 4. What is ironic about his speech to Paris: O son, the night before thy wedding-day Hath Death lain with thy wife. There she lies, Flower as she was, de-flowerd by him. How do Lord and Lady Capulets responses to the death contrast to their earlier words and behaviour towards Juliet? The Friar, glad that his plan for Juliet has worked, scolds the family for their sorrow. How does he justify Juliets death? (paraphrase lines 65-83) What other changes in character do you see in this scene (as compared to 1.5)? What is the effect of the short time frame (three days) proposed for Juliets marriage to Paris? Everyone thinks Juliet is dead. How well has the potion worked? What are her symptoms, as identified by Capulet?

Act 5
Scene 1: 1. 2. Look at Romeos soliloquy at the beginning of the scene. What is its significance? (plot, character, theme, or figurative language) How is the I defy you, stars a significant remark in the portrayal of Romeos character?

How has Romeos character at the end of the scene much different from the way he was at the beginning of the play when we first meet him? Provide a quotation from the latter part of this scene that proves your answer.
