OSPE SALUTES MPP FOR WORK TO END ILLEGAL USE OF UNPAID INTERNSHIPS Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) President Paul Acchione, P.Eng., has written a letter to Donna Cansfield MPP (Etobicoke Centre), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Research and Innovation, to thank her for her support of ending the illegal use of unpaid internships. OSPE and PEO met with Ms. Cansfield on January 17 to discuss the issue of unpaid internships in the engineering sector. Also in that meeting were Marilyn Spink, P.Eng., and George Comrie, P.Eng. Ms. Spink was OSPE Political Action Network Rep at the time and now is a PEO Councillor and Mr. Comrie was 200405 PEO President and now Etobicoke Chapter GLP Chair. Donna Cansfield, MPP Etobioke Centre 4800 Dundas Street West Toronto, ON M9A 1B1

Dear Ms. Cansfield, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for meeting with Marilyn Spink, OSPE PAN Representative, George Comrie, GLP Chair for PEO Etobicoke Chapter, and I on January 17, 2014 to discuss the issue of unpaid internships. It was a fruitful discussion about a serious and troubling issue that has started to surface in the engineering sector but is more widespread in many other sectors in Ontario. A recent report in the Globe and Mail published on March 28, 2014 indicates that the Ministry of Labour is increasing inspections to stop illegal use of unpaid interns. The article states that this will begin with the magazine sector but we see this as a victory for all sectors, including the engineering sector. In our January 17 meeting, you indicated that you would take up the issue of unpaid internships with the Minister of Labour. OSPE applauds your efforts and those of your government for dealing with this important issue for our youth. Unpaid internships are particularly hard on women and lower income youth. OSPE commends the government for taking steps to put an end to illegal use of unpaid internships.

Sincerely,

Paul Acchione, P.Eng. President and Chair 2014032
