What is a bird?
Class: aves or avialae

Quetzal
Found in forests and woodland It is strikingly colorful and is
found on the trogen family

There are 5 different types of


species: crested, golden headed, white tipped, resplendent, and pavonine.

They feed on fruit

Love Birds
Native to Madagascar One of nine species of the genus
Agapornis.

They are very affectionate and social. Their name stems from the parrots
bonding and the long periods of time they spend together.

They eat fruit, vegetables, seeds, and


grass.

Victoria Crowned Pigeon


Named after the British Monarch
Queen Victoria.

Deep Blue, Gray color with a small


black mask.

They live in the Lowland and Swamp


Forests of Northern New Guinea.

Makes a deep whooping sound while


calling.

They eat fruits and seeds.

Knysna Turaco
Lives in South Africa. Often remains conspicuous in tree
tops.

It's 40-42 cm long. Long tail and a thick but small


orange,red bill.

They feed on fruit, insects, and earth


worms.

They also have a loud, "Kow Kow Kow


Kow" call.

Half-Collared Kingfish
Eats almost only fish. Found Near water at almost all
times.

Found in Southern and Eastern


Africa.

None of its family members can


be found on three continents.

Reproduction
More closely observed than any other animals. Activities include establishing territories, finding mates,
constructing nests, incubating eggs, and feeding young.

Testes enlarge during the breeding season.

Examples of attracting mates include woodpeckers drumming on trees, Cranes having courtship dances involving stepping, bowing, jumping, etc.

Some birds pair for life. For example: swans, geese, and eagles.
Most birds are monogamous.

Nutrition
Most birds have a large appetite
which serves their high metabolic rate.

Bird bills and tongues are modified


for different eating Habits and food sources.

Example: Wood peckers have barbed


tongues to get grubs from the bark of trees.

Birds necks help them when it comes


to obtaining food.

Evolution
It's said that birds have evolved from reptiles because
they both have scaly feet and shelled eggs.

There is now more ancestry proving the link between


the evolution of reptiles to birds.

Relationships
Birds prey on fish, Arthropoda, small mammals, and
plants.

Example: Eagles mostly eat smaller animals like


rabbits, lizards, fish, frogs, snakes, squirrels, dogs and other smaller birds

Other animals such as mammals and reptiles prey on


birds.

Example: Some mammals (such as humans) eat birds


like chicken, duck, turkey, quail, pheasant, etc
