Function
To carry current -under normal operating conditions. -under overload operating conditions. - under short circuit operating conditions. To withstand pulling stresses during cable laying. To maintain a uniform electric field and minimize electrostatic stresses (voltage stress control layer). To withstand the various voltage field stresses during the cable service life: - rated voltage. - lightening overvoltage. -switching overvoltage. To maintain a uniform electric field and minimize electrostatic stresses (voltage stress control layer). To provide: - An electric screen (no electric field outside the cable). - An active conductor for the capacitive and earth fault short circuit current. - A contribution to mechanical protection. In the case of three core cables, it is used to fill the interstices between the three cores.

Composition
Compact round stranded cable with copper or aluminium wires.

Item Tape Binder Bedding

Function
Wrapped round the assembly to form a compact circular cable. To keep the bundle together. To provide sound bedding for the metallic armour. This guards against mechanical damage to the cable.

Composition
Polyester (Non-conducting). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene (PE) compound, extruded over the laid up three core cable or on the screened single core cables. Aluminium (non-magnetic ) wire/tape armour is used for single core cables. Steel wire /tape armour is used for three phase cables.

Outer Sheath

For overall mechanical, weather, chemical and electrical protection. Outer semi conductive layer or graphite coating for testing purpose.

PVC or PE, plus : Extruded semi conductive layer or graphite coating is applied over the outer sheath for testing purpose of the non-metallic outer sheath.

Cable construction may includes additional layers, according to some specific requirements.
