TatweerPetroleum,thejointventureoperatingcompanybetweenOccidental PetroleumCorporation(Oxy),BahrainsNoga(NationalOil&GasAuthority),and MubadalaDevelopmentCompany,wascreatedtoincreasetheoutputand reservesoftheBahrainoilfields.Intheirfirstyearofsmartfieldoperation, TatweerPetroleumhassucceededinraisingtheproductionfromthefieldby25 percent.Keytothesuccessofthisoperationwasthecreationofahighcapacity wirelesscommunicationsnetwork. TheBahrainFieldisamatureoilfield,discoveredin1932,whichhadexperienced manyyearsofproductiondeclinebeforeTatweertookoveroperationsin December2009.Theremainingoilreservesweredeemedtooheavyforstandard recoverymethodsandEnhancedOilRecovery(EOR)techniquesneededtobe deployed.InordertosupportEORTatweerknewthatsmartfieldtechnology wouldneedtobedeployed,butthisrequiredaveryhighspeedandmodernIP network.ComplicatingthiswasalegacySCADAsystemwhichrequiredan antiquatedserialportnetworkingprotocolbeintegratedintothenewIP network.Inaddition,Tatweerwantedtogreatlyincreasethewellcountinthe firstyearusingtheirexistingthreerigsandteamsmoreefficiently.Operatingrigs atthisspeedwouldnecessitatemicroseismicmodelingandsmartdrilling techniques,sothedrillingoperationandonsiteseismicmodelingwouldalso havetobeincludedinthesmartfieldoperation. Redlinewaschosenbecauseofitsexperiencewithotheroil&gascompaniesin theregion.RedlineinstalleditsRDL3000basestationsatopfourexisting telecommunicationstowers.Thiscreateda2.8GbpsVirtualFiberbackboneto whichindustrialgraderemoteradioscouldbeconnectedanywhereinthefield. Over400wellheadswereconnectedtothebackbone,whichenabledwellhead automation.MobiledrillingrigswerefittedwithRedlinessmartantennaradio whichautomaticallyrealignsitselftotheclosestBaseStation,atarangeofupto 10km,eachtimethatthedrillingrigismoved.Thisenhancementallowsthe drillingoperationtoregainconnectivityimmediatelyaftersiterelocation,and withoutdependingonthecommunicationsengineerstorealignanantenna.The increasedspeedofsmartdrillingallowedthreemobilerigstodrill25newwellsin thefirstyearanincredibleaverageof4.6drillingdaysperwell.Redlinesradios enhancedwithSmartLinksoftwarepermittedtheolderSCADAnetworktobe connecteddirectlytothenewIPnetworkandreducedthecollectordelayfrom 15minutesto9milliseconds. AsaresultofTatweerPetroleumssmartfieldenhancements,productionhas gonefrom32,000barrelsperday(bpd)in2009to40,000today,anincreaseof 8,000bpd,or25%.Withoilpricesabove$100perbarrelthisrepresents $800,000inincreaseddailyproduction.
