Environmental Requirements
Specific details and values for following key environmental requirements for the Tellabs 8830 smart router system are listed in Table A.2, page 17-100: Operating temperature Operating relative humidity Storage and transit temperature Storage and transit humidity Altitude Seismic/earthquake Thermal output Operating noise emission
Minimum 40 VDC 32.5A 42 VDC 30.95A (List 2 current) 1300W 50A 40A
In Table 3.6, page 17-34, List 1 current is considered normal operating current drain, and List 2 is worst-condition current drain. Use List 2 information to calculate cable size. List 2 current drain can differ according to customer requirements, since it is based on the power plant design at the customer site.
Page 17-34
In general, the following definitions apply: List 1 Current Drains - Average busy hour current of equipment at normal operating voltage. Used to size batteries and rectifiers. List 2 Current Drains - Maximum current drain of equipment under low voltage conditions. Used for sizing cabling and over current-protective devices.
The chassis design includes two DC input power blocks, which provide a 1:1 redundancy from two separate, independent DC power sources. Table 3.7, page 17-35, defines the DC power cabling requirements. Table 3.7 Tellabs 8830 Smart Router DC Cabling Requirements Item Power and Ground Connections Description Use 6 AWG wires for all power and ground connections. Consult your national electrical codes (for example, the NEC in the United States). Each DC power block requires two (A and B) power sources. Each branch circuit must have a 40A circuit breaker at the source. Wires that connect the Tellabs 8830 smart router to the power sources should be capable of carrying up to 32.5A. Tellabs recommends consulting the local electrical or NEC codes for approved conductor sizing for DC supply connections. Connect the 48 VDC source that complies with the Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) requirements in UL 1950, IEC 950, EN 60950, and CSA C22.2 No. 950-95.
DC Power Source
Ground
DC power sources must be derived from a dedicated DC branch circuit, and each branch circuit must be protected by a dedicated circuit breaker. The installation site should have a dedicated 15A single-pole circuit breaker with a medium trip delay at each branch circuit (or a 50A fuse at the associated power distribution panel). Mandatory: You must connect an earth-ground cable to the 1/4-20 UNC studs located on the rear panel of the Tellabs 8830 smart router. Note: The ground cable for the DC-version of the Tellabs 8830 smart router must be capable of handling 50A of current.
Page 17-35
Table 3.8, page 17-36, lists and describes the Tellabs system modules and components, and provides a revision level for those that are affected by this increased maximum operating voltage tolerance range. Note 1: The change to the maximum operating voltage tolerance range requires no change to the functionality of the stock keeping units (SKUs) that are referenced in Table 3.8, page 17-36. Customers running Tellabs 8800 smart router series systems that will be operating at the maximum operating voltage tolerance range must use one of the 60 VDC-rated fan tray assemblies listed in Table 3.8, page 17-36. AC Power Requirements
To minimize shock hazard, the Tellabs 8830 smart router must be connected to an electrical ground. The AC-version of the Tellabs 8830 smart router accommodates redundant power feeds. The Tellabs 8830 smart router system is designed to operate on only one feed, which provides sufficient power to meet all of the minimum requirements listed in Table 3.9, page 17-39. When the Tellabs 8830 smart router system is installed in a redundant power application, both AC power feeds must be connected and compliant with these minimum requirements. Power circuit breakers and earth ground connections are defined in Table 3.9, page 17-39. The AC power distribution within the chassis is independent down to the unit level (circuit packs, fans, and system panel electronics). Table 3.9 Tellabs 8830 Smart Router AC Power Requirements Description Voltage Frequency Power Cord Note: Two NEMA L6-20P power cords with locking plug connector are supplied with each Tellabs 8830 smart router AC system. 15A 15A at 200-230 VAC Minimum 200 VAC 50 Hz 16 AWG (required) Maximum 230 VAC 60 Hz ---
The size of the fusing is in accordance with relevant local, regional, or NEC codes to protect the feed wire. The design provides for two AC input power supply modules, which provide a 1:1 redundancy. Table 3.10, page 17-39, defines the AC power and ground cabling requirements. Table 3.10 Tellabs 8830 Smart Router AC Cabling Requirements
Description Use 6 AWG wires for all power and ground connections. Consult your national electrical codes (for example, the NEC in the United States). The system requires two (A and B) AC power sources. Tellabs recommends consulting the local electrical or NEC codes for approved conductor sizing for AC supply connections. Connect the AC source that complies with the Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) requirements in UL 1950, IEC 950, EN 60950, and CSA C22.2 No. 950-95.

Chassis Overview
Figure 4.1, page 17-41, and Figure 4.2, page 17-44, provide a front view of the Tellabs 8830 smart router system chassis. The chassis design includes the following features and components: Mid-plane design supports installations into 19-inch and 23-inch global seismic equipment EIA relay racks. PLMs are installed through the front panel. ULCs and SCCs are installed through the rear panel. A forced air cooling system uses side-mounted tubular axial cooling fans that are contained in two fan tray assemblies.
Note:
The system panel, air filter, and fan tray assemblies are all field-replaceable units (FRU) for the Tellabs 8830 smart router. Supports the use of either highline AC power modules or a 48V DC input terminal blocks. Four dedicated slots for ULCs and two slots for SCCs do not require any corresponding ULC and SCC slot dependencies for operation:
- ULC slots are designated as ULC 1, ULC 2, ULC 3, and ULC 4 - SCC slots are designated as SCC 1 and SCC 2 Supports up to 16 standard-size PLMs, or a combination of standard-size and larger Tellabs 8830 smart router PLMs.
Note:
The Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis supports two Tellabs 8830 smart router PLMs: the Tellabs 8830 smart router 10 Gigabit Ethernet PLM and the Tellabs 8830 smart router OC-192c/STM-64c PLM. These larger size PLMs are designed specifically for the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis and will not fit into any other Tellabs 8800 smart router series. The Tellabs 8830 smart router PLMs occupy the same space that is normally dedicated to four standard-size PLMs. For details about installing the larger PLMs, refer to Installing PLMs, page 17-86.
Page 17-42
4. Equipment Overview
ESD jacks on the front and rear panels of the chassis prevent ESD discharge damage to the ULC, SCC, and PLM components inside the Tellabs 8830 smart router during maintenance or installation. ESD jacks on both front and rear panels also contain wrist grounding strap attachment points.
Note:
Always attach the wrist grounding strap to one of these ESD jacks whenever you are installing components or performing maintenance on the Tellabs 8830 smart router system.
The mid-plane design of the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis provides access from both the front panel and rear panel. This design allows: All installed ULCs, SCCs, AC power supply units, and air filters to be plugged in to the chassis through the rear of the unit. All installed PLMs, fan tray assemblies, and the system panel to be plugged into the chassis through the front of the unit.
Note:
The Tellabs listed accessory cards are intended only for use in Tellabs UL Listed end-use equipment, for example, SCCs, ULCs, and PLMs.

4. Equipment Overview
The chassis design provides for fan redundancy. In the event that any fan fails, the remaining fans in that fan tray continue to cool the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis. In the Tellabs 8830 smart router, fan status and temperature status are indicated in the following ways:
A FAN 1/FAN 2 failure LED that lights red on the system panel
indicates a fan failure, which is also reported to the Tellabs 8890 Management System. If the internal temperature exceeds the temperature thresholds, the TEMP failure LED lights red on the system panel, and the temperature excess is reported to the Tellabs 8890 Management System. The two fan tray assemblies for the Tellabs 8830 smart router draw air in through the intakes at the right side of the chassis. This airflow acts to cool the chassis interior. The air passes through the chassis interior and is exhausted through the vents on the left side of the chassis. The three large cooling fans at the rear of the fan assembly tray are considered smart because they have two operating speeds. External controls that act independently of the input voltage control fan speed. The fan speed control runs the large fans at either low or high speed, depending on the internal temperature of the chassis. The four smaller cooling fans at the front of the fan tray always run in the high-speed mode. Note: Figure 4.7, page 17-53, shows the side view of one of the fan tray assemblies removed from the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis.

The Tellabs 8830 smart router contains two air filters that filter the cooling air being drawn into the chassis and reduces the possibility of internal contamination. Figure 4.9, page 17-54, shows one of the air filters removed from the chassis. There are two air filter assemblies for the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis and these are located adjacent to the air intakes on the left side of the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis (from a rear panel orientation; refer to Figure 4.8, page 17-53). Figure 4.10, page 17-55, show the air flow through chassis.

Figure 4.9
Maintaining the proper operation of the cooling system for the Tellabs 8830 smart router may require servicing one or more of the air filters that part of the fan tray assemblies. An air filter kit (Tellabs P/N 81.8830-AF) includes all the filters needed for the chassis. Refer to the TMOS Maintenance Manual, 76.8800FP90/26, for removal and replacement procedures. Note: In a Central Office environment, inspect the air filters every six to twelve months. If there is a visibly significant accumulation of dust or debris, the filter should be replaced. It is a good practice to replace air filters once a year. The replaced air filter is disposable locally as they are RoHS (EU and China) and WEEE compliant. Do not return them to Tellabs as they cannot be cleaned and reused. The primary function of the air filter is to prevent dust from entering the chassis and depositing on the printed circuit assemblies. Even with a significant accumulation of dust or debris on the air filter, the air flow is not substantially impeded and the air temperature within the chassis may rise only a few degrees higher than a fan tray with new air filters.

DC Terminal Blocks
The Tellabs 8830 smart router DC-version powered chassis contains two DC terminal blocks on the rear panel that must be wired at the installation site. Each DC terminal block is equipped with the following inputs: 48V RTN (return)
Each DC terminal block is capable of supplying and all of the necessary power requirements for the chassis slots, system panel, PLMs, SCCs, ULCs, LEDs, and cooling fans. Each DC terminal block has a dedicated On/Off switch that controls it (for example, the On/Off switch for Input A powers only that DC terminal block on or off).
Page 17-57
4. Equipment Overview
DC power to the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis must be supplied by an independent 48 VDC primary power source. The second DC terminal block provides a 1:1 DC power redundancy protection should one of the DC terminal blocks fail. An optional second 48V power source can provide redundant power to the chassis. DC power guidelines are provided in Connecting Ground and Power, page 17-69.
AC Power Supply
The Tellabs 8830 smart router AC-version chassis contains two removable AC power modules (refer to Figure 4.13, page 17-58) that slide into the rear panel and plug into the mid-plane. Each AC power module is capable of providing 2000 Watts independently, so each module alone is capable of providing sufficient to power the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis. Each AC power module has a dedicated On/Off switch that controls it (for example, the On/Off switch for AC power module A only controls the power to module A). Having two AC power modules provides both load sharing and redundancy protection. AC power modules are hot-swappable. Situated between the two AC power modules on the rear panel are two standard IEC-320 AC C14 male receptacles. The AC power cords supplied with the Tellabs 8830 smart router are equipped with standard IEC-320 C13 female plugs on the system end of the cable, and NEMA l6-20P plugs on the power end of the cable. Chassis Grounding
The chassis ground consists of a tri-post grounding point just above and to the right of ULC 2 as shown in Figure 4.14, page 17-59. The tri-post ground studs offer two grounding orientations depending on how the Tellabs 8830 smart router is mounted, and allows you to install ground wires horizontally or vertically.

Both of these blank panel types help to maintain proper airflow through the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis, and suppress electro-magnetic interference (EMI). Both blank panel types are required in order for the system to be compliant with related FCC and EN55022 regulations. Extra blank panels may be ordered from Tellabs. Use the following part numbers when ordering: SCC/ULC blank panel: Tellabs P/N 81.8830-RBP PLM blank panel: Tellabs P/N 81.8800-PLM-SPB
Understanding T1 Framing
Each T1 signal consists of 192 bits and an additional bit designated as the framing bit, for a total of 193 bits per frame. An SF consists of 12 193-bit frames with a synchronization bit pattern. This pattern is repeated and monitored every 12 frames to allow the receiving end to determine the synchronization bit and identify the beginning and end of the frames. An ESF consists of 24 193 bit frames with a different synchronization bit pattern applied only to predetermined frames. ESF is preferred over SF because ESF contains a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) framing bit within each frame, which allows in-service monitoring for bit errors.
Understanding E1 Framing
An E1 signal consists of 32 timeslots, with timeslot 0 used for framing information, timeslot 16 used for signaling, and the remaining timeslots carrying data. However, if you are using E1 for BITS clocking, the Tellabs 8830 smart router only monitors the framing information in timeslot 0 and does not monitor signaling information if available on timeslot 16.
Page 17-61
4. Equipment Overview
Note 1:
The configuration of timeslots 0 and 16 for framing and signaling information respectively is optional and can only be configured at the E1 timing source and not on the Tellabs 8830 smart router. The Tellabs 8830 smart router does not support the use of an E1 BITS source when all of the E1 timeslots are carrying data.
Note 2:
The E1 timeslot information that the smart router supports and which is used to frame the signal and extract timing information from it are as follows: Cyclic Redundancy Check 4 (CRC4)Timeslot 0 is used to carry framing information. All other timeslots carry data. CRC4 + Channel Associated Signaling (CAS)Timeslot 0 is used to carry framing information and timeslot 16 carries CAS. CRC4 + Common Channel Signaling (CCS)Timeslot 0 is used to carry framing information and timeslot 16 carries CCS.
Tellabs 8800 smart router series choose the highest priority clock source that is available whenever selecting a clock to replace a failed external clock source. This occurs if the currently selected clock source fails, or it is triggered manually to switch to a different clocking source by a TMOS CLI command or by using the Tellabs 8890 Management System. If the Tellabs 8800 smart router series is configured to use a revertive clock, the current clock is re-evaluated whenever a new clock source is detected. Tellabs 8800 smart router series support the following prioritized clock sources (the first six are external clock sources), from highest to lowest: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. BITS A BITS B Configured SONET/SDH or DS3 port Configured SONET/SDH or DS3 port Configured SONET/SDH or DS3 port
Page 17-62
4. Equipment Overview
6. 7. 8.
Configured SONET/SDH or DS3 port Holdover clock Internal clock (Stratum-3 system clock)
If the six external clock sources are unavailable, a Tellabs 8800 smart router series uses either the holdover clock or the internal clock. The holdover clock locks onto the last available external clock source and acts as the clock source as soon as no external sources are available. The internal clock (oscillator) is only used when the holdover clock is not valid. BITS Clock Alarm Reporting Modes The Tellabs 8800 smart router series support the following two BITS clock alarm reporting modes: BITS Alarm Suppression Enabled Mode, page 17-63 BITS Alarm Suppression Disabled Mode, page 17-64
There are five system clock-related events generated by the Tellabs 8800 smart router series: ActSysClka transient informational event sent whenever the system clock switches from one clock source to another (event 203). SysClkFaila persistent major alarm event sent whenever the system clock switches to the internal clock from an external line source (event 204). BitsAlmChga transient informational event sent when the BITS clock alarm suppression mode is changed from Enabled to Disabled (event 240). BitsClkUpa transient informational event sent when the operational status of the BITS clock is Up (event 241). BitsClkDna persistent major alarm event sent whenever one or both of the BITS clock sources fail (event 242).
Note:
For more information about the system clock-related events, refer to the TMOS Maintenance Manual, 76.8800FP90/26, for more details.
The BITS alarm suppression enabled mode does not generate any major alarms when the BITS clock fails. The only indication of a BITS clock source failure is a transient, informational event that indicates that a clocking source has changed (event 203). The default clock alarm reporting mode setting is BITS alarm suppression enabled. When in this mode, Tellabs 8800 smart router series can exhibit the following behavior when clock failures occur: Transient informational events are sent upon any of the following clock source switching conditions:
- BITS A switching to BITS B - Line source x switching to line source y - BITS A or B switching to line source y - Any external clock source switching to an internal clock - Holdover clock switching to an internal clock
76.8800FP90/17, Rev A, 3/13 Page 17-63
4. Equipment Overview
The BITS alarm suppression disabled mode generates three events related to the status of the BITS clock. When in this mode, Tellabs 8800 smart router series can exhibit the following behavior related to the status of the BITS clock: BitsAlmChga transient informational event sent when the BITS clock alarm suppression mode is changed from Enabled to Disabled (event 240). BitsClkUpa transient informational event sent when the operational status of the BITS clock is Up (event 241). BitsClkDn: a persistent major alarm event sent when a BITS clock fails (event 242).
For detailed CLI command information about configuring system clocks, refer to the TMOS Command Reference Manual, 76.8800FP90/5.

Installation Guidelines
ESD Warning:
Electro-static discharge (ESD) can result in serious damage to the ULC, SCC, and PLM components inside the Tellabs 8830 smart router. To prevent ESD when working with system components, wear the wrist grounding strap and attach it to the ESD jack on the Tellabs 8830 smart router system panel.
Operating ambient temperature: When a Tellabs 8830 smart router is installed in a cabinet or a multi-unit rack, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may run higher than the room ambient temperature. (Refer to Table A.2, page 17-100 for environmental requirements.) Therefore, you must install the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tma) specified by the manufacturer to prevent heat damage to the system. Unrestricted air flow: The installation site must allow sufficient air flow clearance at the rear and sides of the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis. To ensure proper functioning, the cooling system requires unrestricted air flow. Allow at least 6 inches (15 cm) clearance at the rear of the rack, and 3 inches (7.5 cm) clearance on the sides of the rack.
Page 17-66
Populate each slot with an SCC, ULC, or blank panel to ensure proper circulation of cooling air throughout the chassis cage, and maintain an acceptable operating temperature.
Circuit overloading: Evaluate equipment connections to the supply circuit, and the potential effect that overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Adhere to equipment nameplate ratings to avoid circuit overloading. Mechanical loading: When mounting equipment in the rack, avoid uneven mechanical loading that might result in a hazardous condition. Reliable earthing: Maintain reliable earthing for the rack-mounted equipment. Give particular attention to supply connections, other than direct connections to the branch circuit (for example, the use of power strips). Lifting and positioning equipment: Always obtain assistance when lifting and aligning the Tellabs 8830 smart router in the installation rack. For safety, Tellabs recommends the participation of three people. Refer to Positioning and Securing the Tellabs 8830 Smart Router, page 17-68.
To obtain NEBS Zone 4 earthquake compliance, you must use the Tellabs 19-inch open frame seismic rack (Tellabs P/N 149.0239), or the Tellabs 23-inch open frame seismic rack (Tellabs P/N 149.0246). To perform a seismic-mounting of the Tellabs 8830 smart router this requires you to use either designated open frame seismic rack, which includes two mounting brackets per side.
Page 17-67
You can use one of the mounting brackets as a template to locate the proper holes on the rack. If the brackets are already attached, remove one and use it to mark the correct holes on both sides of the rack. Re-attach the bracket prior to installing the Tellabs 8830 smart router in the rack.
Caution:
The Tellabs 8830 smart router must be mounted horizontally level in the rack to prevent a hazardous operating condition.
Vorsicht:

Each Tellabs 8830 smart router DC power panel contains a set of power blocks (A and B) that accept input voltages between 40.0 and 60.0 VDC (48V nominal). Refer to Figure 5.3, page 17-70, for a close-up view of a DC power block. These power blocks provide power to the chassis in this way: Input block A and B powers the ULCs (4, 3, 2, and 1), the SCCs (1 and 2), the PLMs (1 through 16) Both input blocks (A and B) furnish power to the system fans and control panel
Note:
The Tellabs 8830 smart router is designed so that all of the power requirements for proper operation can be supplied from a single DC power block. The second DC power block provides a 1:1 level of power redundancy.

The set of DC power blocks offers some flexibility when installing and connecting DC power cabling by giving you the following options: Separate the cables to power block A and to power block B with the DC power cabling running independently along each side of the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis Combine the two cables, with the DC power cabling running together along only one side of the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis
Use 6 AWG wires with crimp-on lugs for all connections. For example, use Burndy YA6CL-2TC14 (Tellabs P/N 52.6121) or equivalent. Each DC input block filter assembly connection is rated at 32.5A maximum, with the following requirements: A dedicated, appropriately-rated DC power source for each connection. DC power cables must be terminated by dual-hole cable lugs (1/4-inch hole with 5/8-inch spacing) at the Tellabs 8830 smart router end. The lugs must fit over M6 terminal studs on.625-inch (15.88 mm) centers. The lugs are provided as part of the DC Assembly Kit that accompanies each Tellabs 8830 smart router (refer to Inspecting the Accessory Box, page 17-25). Note: Proper installation requires a 10 mm socket and nut driver for the M6 nuts on the DC terminal blocks, and a torque driver with a 22 lb-in maximum torque setting. Refer to DC Power Feed Installation Supplies, page 17-28, for additional tool specifications and descriptions.

AC Power Module B
The two AC power modules slide into the rear AC power panel of the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis, and plug into the mid-plane. Because each AC power module is capable of providing a maximum of 2000 watts independently, a single module is sufficient to power the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis.
Page 17-71
The two AC power modules support load sharing and 1:1 AC power redundancy protection. For example, in the event that one of the AC power modules fails, the other AC power module provides a redundant source of power, and operations continue uninterrupted. This design gives AC power modules hot-swap capability. Situated between the two AC power modules are two standard IEC-320 AC C14 male receptacles. The AC power cords that are supplied with the Tellabs 8830 smart router are equipped with standard IEC-320 C13 female plugs on the system end of the cable, and NEMA L6-20P plugs on the power source end of the cable. Each AC power module includes a dedicated On/Off switch. Each AC power module provides two sets of blades that plug into two connectors on the mid-plane: One set of blades provides power to the A bus One set of blades provides power to the B bus
These connections provide the dedicated 48V A and B and 48V RTN (return) A and B buses in the chassis Note: Refer to the TMOS Maintenance Manual, 76.8800FP90/26, for the procedure describing replacing an AC power module.
Table 5.1, page 17-72, describes the LEDs on the front panel of the AC power modules. Figure 5.4, page 17-71, shows the location of these LEDs. Table 5.1 AC Power Module LEDs LED ALM (alarm) LED Description When unlit, the ALM LED indicates that the AC power module is functioning normally. When lit red, the ALM LED indicates that the AC input voltage has encountered a fault with either the AC input voltage, or the DC output voltage. AC OK LED When lit green, the AC OK LED indicates that the AC power module is functioning normally. When lit red (or if unlit), the AC OK LED indicates that the AC input voltage is not within proper limits. DC OK LED When green, the DC OK LED indicates that the AC power module is functioning normally. When red (or if unlit), the AC OK LED indicates that the DC output voltage is not within proper tolerances (48 VDC). The AC power modules provide AC power to the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis to support the following system components: Fan tray assemblies System panel ULCs SCCs PLMs
Page 17-72
To properly ground the Tellabs 8830 smart router, perform the following steps: 1. Use a 6 AWG copper grounding cable of a sufficient length to connect the Tellabs 8830 smart router ground lug to the nearest earth ground point.
Note:
Grounding wire is not provided. Grounding options depend on specific customer or site requirements. Follow the requirements in this manual unless site requirements dictate otherwise. If necessary, consult the local electrical codes or the NEC, and observe all codes and requirements. 2. 3. Crimp the cable to the chassis ground lug, using the hardware supplied with the chassis. Verify that the grounding cable can handle 32.5 amps of current.
Page 17-73
Ground Requirements
All Tellabs 8830 smart router products are required to be hard-wired to an earth ground. The chassis earth ground point is a set of three grounding studs located on the rear panel of the chassis (refer to Figure 5.5, page 17-75). The earth ground wire size must be 6 AWG. Note: Specific site or customer-specified requirements can affect the size and length of the grounding cable needed. Follow these requirement guidelines unless the site or customer-specified requirements dictate otherwise. If necessary, consult the local electrical codes or the NEC and observe all codes and requirements.
To properly ground the Tellabs 8830 smart router, perform the following steps: 1. Use a safety ground wire that is a minimum of 6 AWG UL-listed stranded wire. Attach the appropriate lugs attached to the wire ends connecting to the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis. The lugs are supplied in the AC Assembly Kit that accompanies each Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis (refer to Inspecting the Accessory Box, page 17-25). 2. Connect the ring lugs to the threaded studs and secure them in place using the lock nuts supplied with the Tellabs 8830 smart router chassis.

If any power terminal does not have a resistance reading of OL, report the failure to Tellabs. If the resistance reading for each of the two terminals is OL, the power lines isolation test passed. Connecting AC Power The AC model of the Tellabs 8830 smart router is supplied with two three-conductor AC power cables. The AC power cable must be plugged into an approved three-contact electrical outlet. The AC power jack and mounting plug of the AC power cable complies with the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) safety standards. The Tellabs 8830 smart router AC version provides two AC power modules for AC power redundancy. The AC version is equipped with two standard IEC-320 AC C14 male receptacles on the rear panel (refer to Figure 5.4, page 17-71). AC power modules must meet the requirements in Table 5.2, page 17-77. Use the following guidelines to connect AC power on the rear panel of the Tellabs 8830 smart router: 1. 2. 3. 4. Connecting DC Power Make sure that the AC power switches on the Tellabs 8830 smart router rear panel are set in the Off (O) position. Attach the AC power cables to the Tellabs 8830 smart router AC receptacles. Attach a safety ground wire to the threaded grounding studs on the rear panel chassis. Attach the other end of the safety ground wire to the customersupplied (site) earth ground.
To minimize shock hazard, the Tellabs 8830 smart router must be connected to an electrical ground. Be sure to follow the cautions and warnings in this section when you ground and connect DC power to the Tellabs 8830 smart router. The DC-version of the Tellabs 8830 smart router provides two DC power blocks that offer DC power redundancy. The Tellabs 8830 smart router is designed to operate on a single DC power block, and each unit can independently supply sufficient power for the entire chassis and components. Because the Tellabs 8830 smart router is installed in a redundant power configuration, both DC feeds must be connected and meet minimum requirements. Power circuit breakers and earth ground connections are required. The DC power blocks for the Tellabs 8830 smart router must meet the requirements in Table 5.3, page 17-78. Table 5.3 DC Power Requirements Characteristic Power arrangement Maximum power Maximum current Input voltage range List 2 current (per input) Description Two redundant inputs: Input A and Input B 1300W 32.5A at 40 VDC 40 VDC to 60.0 VDC (-48V nominal) 30.95A at -42 VDC
In Table 5.2, page 17-77, and Table 5.3, page 17-78, List 2 is the worst-condition current drain. Use List 2 information to calculate cable size. List 2 current drain can differ according to customer requirements, since it is based on the power plant design at the customer site. In general, the following definitions apply to List currents: List 1 current drains - Average busy hour current of equipment at normal operating voltage. Used to size batteries and rectifiers. List 2 current drains - Maximum current drain of equipment under low voltage conditions. Used for sizing cabling and over current-protective devices.

For each type of alarm, connect the common leads and either the normally open (N.O.) or normally closed (N.C.) leads to the alarm annunciator or other external alarm system. Whenever a Tellabs 8830 smart router declares an alarm, the system provides both visual and audible indications that act as alerts. Each set of relay contacts is Form C (dry contacts). The normal state of each set of relay contacts is the no-alarm state. Therefore, be sure to connect the correct relay contacts (either normally open or normally closed) to the alarm system. Refer to External Alarm Connector, page 17-106, for the DB-25 alarm connector signal pinouts.
Caution:
For safety reasons, Tellabs recommends the use of shielded cable for all copper wire connections to and from the Tellabs 8800 smart router series chassis. The internal shield of the cable must be connected to ground at both ends of the cable. Tellabs intra-building port(s) is suitable for connection only to shielded intra-building cabling that is grounded at both ends.
Vorsicht:
For console connector pinouts, refer to Console Serial Connector, page 17-102. For adapter pin cross-connections, refer to RJ-45 to DB-9 Connector Adapters, page 17-103. From the console, use HyperTerminal, TeraTerm Pro, or any equivalent terminal program to set the console communication (COM) port parameters. Note: Ensure that the terminal server you use is NOT set to exchange information continuously. This setting can cause excess logging of messages, which, after an extended period of time, may result in an SCC switchover.
Page 17-93
There are two console ports available to access TMOS and the CLI. At the rear of the chassis, you can connect to the serial port of the active SCC; this is called the Main console port. At the front of the chassis, you can connect to the serial port on the system panel; this is called the AUX console port. These ports have different default settings; only the AUX port is configurable. Table 5.5, page 17-94 shows the settings for the Main console port on the active SCC. If you are trying to reach the management Ethernet interface IP address from a remote management system that belongs to a network that is not directly connected to the smart router, you must add a static IP address route to that system using the enable config protocol ip route command. For instance, if the remote network management system is on the 172.16.22.0/24 network and the smart router is on the 172.16.10.0/24 network, you must add the static route to the remote system as follows:
8830# enable config protocol ip route 172.16.22.0/24 172.16.10.1
where 172.16.10.1 is the default gateway address as defined by the enable config system mgmt-ip default-gateway command.

Laser
The Tellabs 8800 smart router series and associated optical test sets use semiconductor laser sources that emit light energy into fiber or lightguide cables. The lasers emit lightwaves within the infrared (invisible) wavelengths. The level of laser radiation emitted from the transmitters of this product are not considered to be hazardous; however, the level of radiation that may be emitted from a disconnected optical facility receive cable may be harmful to the eye. As a general practice, do not look into the end of optical disconnects.
Safety Precautions
Only qualified technicians who are knowledgeable and trained in optical safety hazards can operate, maintain, install, and service the Tellabs 8800 smart router series. Optical radiation originates from the optical connectors, or in the case of cable rupture, the optical fiber ends.
DANGER:
When inspecting optical fibers or connectors, always use protected optical viewing aids. For example, fiberscopes and magnifying glasses must be equipped with protective filters to block infrared (IR) laser radiation. Use laser safety glasses that are equipped to protect against all possible wavelength ranges emitting from the equipment.
GEFAHR:
Page 17-116
DANGER:
The power level of the visible and invisible laser radiation emitted from an unconnected facility fiber optical cable is not under Tellabs control and may be dangerous. Therefore, to ensure safety, assume that it is dangerous to your eyesight. As a general practice, NEVER LOOK INTO ANY OPEN OPTICAL PORT OR END OF A DISCONNECTED OPTICAL CABLE.
GEFAHR:
DANGER:
Do not examine fiber optic cables when there is a light source present. Before examining fiber optic cables with unfiltered magnifying lenses or microscopes, perform the following actions to prevent accidental exposure to optical radiation: perform the necessary steps to disable the laser source of the fiber to be examined disconnect the optical path from all relevant optical modules
Turning off a laser source in the Tellabs 8800 smart router series disrupts traffic.
GEFAHR:
Page 17-117
DANGER:
Fiber glass fragments can enter the skin and be very difficult to detect and remove. Do not handle exposed optical fiber with bare hands or touch it to your body. If there is any suspicion of glass fiber chips in your eye, seek medical attention at once.
GEFAHR:
Follow these precautions to prevent physical injury when handling optical fiber: 1. 2. Avoid looking directly at the fiber connectors. If it is required to look at the connectors, perform one of the following actions to prevent any hazard: a. Remove the optical modules or ensure the optical modules are not powered at both the shelf near end and shelf at the fiber path far end. b. Wear protective glasses that block all possible wavelength ranges emitting from the equipment. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Wear laser safety glasses when installing optical fibers. Wash your hands after handling optical fibers. Handle optical fibers with extreme care during installation and position the optical fibers in a safe and secure location. Protect unterminated optical fiber connectors with dust caps at all times. Perform the necessary steps to disable the laser source, unplug optical modules, and disconnect optical paths when using magnifying lenses or microscopes.

Der Kunde ist fr die Vermeidung von Dienstunterbrechungen selber verantwortlich Take traffic into consideration before proceeding with any of the fiber optic cleaning procedures.
DANGER:
Laser emissions on the optical interface may be present. Even if traffic has been removed when the fiber optic cable was disconnected, the laser associated with the optical interface of the module may still be on. To avoid personal injury to the eyes assume the laser is always on and never look into the optical interface on any module.
GEFAHR:
Before servicing an in-service system, ensure that traffic has been removed from the optical interface. This precaution will prevent a service disruption and ensure that direct exposure to a laser beam is avoided. Clean the connectors on all new optical interfaces such as fiber connectors, adapters, and bulkheads before they are used to complete a connection. Clean the male and female ends of any connection that is going to be relocated or reseated.
Page 17-119
Ensure that dust caps are used to cover all unused types of connectors including fiber patch cables hanging off fiber racks, bulkheads on fiber patch panels, and system modules. Keep connectors covered when not in use. Inspect and clean module (bulkhead) connectors and adapters only if contamination is suspected. If connectors or adapters are damaged or cannot be cleaned, send them to Tellabs for repair. Clean all new system interconnect connectors prior to insertion. Use new material for each connector. Never reuse cleaning materials, unless directed to do in a procedure. Always insert the receive cable into the channel first, and then insert the associated transmit cable.
Observe the following admonishments before proceeding with any one of the cleaning procedures:

DANGER:
Never look into the end of an optical fiber. Exposure to invisible LASER radiation can cause serious and/or permanent damage to the eye or even blindness. Verify the optical source is disabled through the use of an optical power meter before handling optical fibers. Use of controls, adjustments, or procedures other than those specified within this document may result in hazardous laser radiation exposure.
GEFAHR:
Caution:
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) sensitive devices can cause catastrophic failure or degraded life and performance of a device. Use an anti-static wrist strap connected to a properly grounded source before contacting any electronic devices.
Vorsicht:
1. Using the pressurized duster, blow away any dust particles that may be on the exterior surface of the connector, particularly the sides and end face of the ferrule. This is easily done by holding the can approximately two inches from the surface to be cleaned and applying three to five short blasts of air. Fold a paper wipe over itself and place it on a hard surface. Place about 1/2 teaspoon of alcohol in the center of the wipe. Gently place the end face of the connector plug on the moistened portion of the wipe and slowly (and gently) slide it across the moistened area in one sweeping move.
