Unpiled Debates

More of Marlovian Theory Source: The Shakespeare Authorship Trust. : Rosalind Barber, Julia Cleave, William Leahy, Mark Rylance, Lisa Wilson, n.d. Web. 12 Mar. 2014. <http://www.shakespeareanauthorshiptrust.org.uk/pages/candidates/marlowehs.htm>. Paraphrase: Dr. Thomas Corwin Mendenhall in 1901. theory about word lengths for different playwrites. Bacon and Shakespeare - no match. Only Marlowe matched shakespeare's 4 word "spike." Both had... 240 4 letter words 130 five letter 60 6 letter per thousand. Other word lengths close.

My Ideas: The Marlovian theory is a pretty good one because of how similar the word lengths are. It is spectacular how a person could find all these similarities. History: Created: 03/12/14 09:26 AM

How the theory of Marlowe started Source: The Shakespeare Authorship Trust. : Rosalind Barber, Julia Cleave, William Leahy, Mark Rylance, Lisa Wilson, n.d. Web. 12 Mar. 2014. <http://www.shakespeareanauthorshiptrust.org.uk/pages/candidates/marlowehs.htm>.

Quote:
"...When an anonymous writer asked, 'Can Christopher Marlowe have been a nom de guerre assumed for a time by Shakespeare?... This much is certain, that, during the five years of the nominal existence of Marlowe, Shakespeare did not produce a single play."

Paraphrase: First suggested anonymously in Monthly Review in 1819. First person to publish reversal of idea, saying that maybe Marlowe wrote shakespeare canon, Wilbur G. zeiglur. Wilbur's reasoning: similar vocab, versification and thought of the dramas by Marlowe and shakespeare.

My Ideas: It is interesting how the theory of Marlowe being the real Shakespeare started more than 2 centuries after he lived and died. History: Created: 03/12/14 09:21 AM

Francis Bacon Source: Shakespeare Resource Center. J.M. Pressley, 1997. Web. 11 Mar. 2014. <http://www.bardweb.net/debates.html>. Paraphrase: Favorite of anti-Stratford camp. His style was very different from Shakespeare's. Hard to see how he found spare time to write Shakespearean plays. History: Created: 03/11/14 02:16 PM

Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford Source: Shakespeare Resource Center. J.M. Pressley, 1997. Web. 11 Mar. 2014. <http://www.bardweb.net/debates.html>. Paraphrase: Idea that he wrote Shakespearean plays- Very advanced since 1930s. Well-educated and well-traveled. Nobleman of Queen Elizabeth I's court. Stopped literary pursuits at an early age unless wrote under the allias of Shakespeare.

The Authorship Debate Source: Shakespeare Resource Center. J.M. Pressley, 1997. Web. 11 Mar. 2014. <http://www.bardweb.net/debates.html>. Paraphrase: Many conspiracy theories about the works of Shakespeare being made by other people. Marlowe would be ultimate ghost writer because many think that he may have faked his own death.

Marlowe and Shakespeare connection Source: Dunton-Downer, Leslie, and Alan Riding. Essential Shakespeare Handbook. New York: DK, 2004. Print. Pages: 30 My Ideas: When Christopher Marlowe died, it seemed to impact Shakespeare, not personally, but in work. I think it was interesting that they were both such big parts in playwriting history during the same time period, though they never met. Because of Marlowe's death, Shakespeare was able to become more famous. History: Created: 03/12/14 09:10 AM

Fake death?

Source: Shakespeare Resource Center. J.M. Pressley, 1997. Web. 11 Mar. 2014. <http://www.bardweb.net/debates.html>. Paraphrase: At a tavern brawl, stabbed to death. Some say he didn't actually die, but was sometimes a spy in the employ of the Crown. Apparently spent years writing poetry and plays under penname of Shakespeare. History: Created: 03/11/14 09:23 AM

The poetic beauty and dignity of his language raise them to the level of high art." Paraphrase: Most important plays: Tamburlaine the Great (1587, both parts), Dr. Faustus, (1588,) The Jew of Malta, (1589), and Edward II, (1592). Themes of his plays-heroic main character who is a good person who destroys himself by power and ambition.

How he died Source: Hussey, Maurice. The World of Shakespeare and His Contemporaries. New York: Viking, 1972. Print. Pages: 64 Paraphrase: While Christopher Marlow was staying at the home of his patron Thomas Walsingham, he was called to the Privy Council. While on his way, he went through Deptford and stopped at a tavern. Ingram Friser killed him. My Ideas: It is very sad how Christopher Marlowe died because along with the fact that he was very young, it was very unexpected. His life was probably pretty good before it was taken away from him
