1. I will call the students to the instructional rug to model how to give directions and show students my metacognition. o Alright class today we are going to use our maps from yesterday to guide one of our friends on an adventure. But first we need to make a plan of action. I am going to show you how I would prewrite directions for my adventure. We are going to start in our classroom, all of us will, but where do I want to go? I must stay on school grounds and I probably shouldnt disrupt any classes or administrators. I think I want to take my friend to the Cafeteria. But I dont want to tell my friend were we are going or it will ruin the surprise. I think I should write my directions down so I dont forget while Im on my adventure. I should number the directions as well so I dont get confused. Have SMART board ready to write. First direction is to walk out of Portable 8 and walk down the stair. I think I need to refresh my mind of which way to turn by looking at my map from yesterday. Is there a unique way I could go to the Cafeteria? Hmmmm maybe if I turn left instead of right like we always do, it would be more mysterious. Second direction, turn left or head west on the sidewalk.

Continue for 5 or so directions while asking the students for their opinions of directions to gauge their understanding of giving directions.

2. Have the students go back to their seats to begin brainstorming where they would like to write their directions to. o After the students have thought of a location they MUST GET IT APPROVED BY ME, too make sure it is safe and undisruptive.

3. Students will grab a sheet of lined paper to begin writing down their instructions. They are writing down the instructions as a rough draft for the next days adventure. o I will be walking around checking directions as they are being written to gauge how many students understand and giving correct directions.

4. When A child is done, I want to review the directions using the map for the previous day to make sure the adventure will go smoothly and I know the student will give correct directions to the designated destination. H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I am using the students interactions during my modeling to gauge how the students are grasping the concepts and who needs to be pulled for further instruction. I am using their written steps to their destination as an assessment of how well the student will Orally give directions the next day to their peers. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.

By planning my oral directions from one location to another I am demonstrating my ability to identify geographic information within a map.

I.

Closure: We will do a ticket out the door with 3 questions: o o o Name 3 people you want to take on your adventure? Where are you taking your friend on your adventure? Why is it important to give detailed directions.

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think displaying my metacognition will be the easiest part for me.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? Getting the students to focus on specific details in which to arrive at the specific destination will be the hardest part. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I am going to follow up this lesson by allowing my students to go on an adventure with a peer and allow each student to have a chance to guide and to be guided. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students that do not grasp the concept I will allow go for a short walk with their map to trace their journey from point A to point B so they have a reference. Students can also take notes while walking to assist with writing directions. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I may need to change the students grouping while writing the directions. I might need all of the students to go on a quick walk to their chosen destination to ensure the directions are written correctly, instead of relying on the maps alone. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult aspect was deciding how I was going to teach how to create the directions.
