Juan Hernandez Interview Project: Part 2 Communication 1010-042 02-18-2014 Interview Analysis Memo Date: Feburary 18, 2014

To: Professor Gagon From: Juan Hernandez Subject:Interview Analysis Memo, COMM 1010-042 I had the opportunity to interview a Dental Lab Technician from the Utah Dental Laboratory in Holiday. This lab is not too far away from my home, I been in the area before but I never noticed it. So I called a few labs and I landed on this dental lab so I could interview Marilyn I have been intending to enter the dental programs soon, so I wanted to interview a dental lab technician. During the interview my interviewee is actually a really nice, humorous person but he kept it very professional when I was asking him questions. All of the classes that he told me to take to become a dental technician I never knew until now. I proceeded with the interview to understand more about being a dental lab technician. I know I would love to have his job, so now I know what I want to do. Summary of Lessons Learned Getting Started in the Medical Field I learned that the dental field is a clean and well lit workplace for all emplyees, and requires to handle small objects, passion for the job and to interact with people. To qualify for the (CDT) Certified Dental Technician you would need at least 5 years of hands on training. Most people wonder if they need an education for this field and you at least need a high school diploma to start off with training. I learned after speaking with Marilyn that he attended West Minister College and that it cost him $3,000 but that was in the 1980s now it would probably cost up to $17,000 since the economy has gone poor and finances has increased rapidly. I also learned that Marilyn did 1 whole year and 9 hours a day to get all the training he needed to become a dental technician. Other types of fields similar to a dental lab technician are Jewlers, contracters, electricions and plumbers. Other types of knowledge and skills I would need to know are creativity, ceramics, its like making breakfast Marilyn said and art Like a touch of an artist Marliyn also shared that he has no regrets at all about working as a dental technician and that he likes to help people out and that becoming a technician he said was its right up my alley. He recommended that I learn the terminology of becoming a dental technician and that it takes years to complete courses to become a technician also that I dont really need too much education for this field but its good to have. A Regular Day Marilyn spoke about his passion for his job, and that its not all about the money its about having the love for the job and that he loves the people that he works for and works with, also his hours/schedual. He doesnt like how the owner of the lab comes and demands things or when the public comes and harass them because that puts negative energy in the workplace. The most difficult duties to do as being a technician is to keep up with each person of what model they finish for the teeth also welding, casting, waxing the teeth could be difficult. Model work on the teeth is the most important process because they have to file and polish the teeth exactly how the patients mouth is. The most easiest tasks are to set up the teeth to be polished or filed and to create molds for the teeth. Marilyns working schedual is Monday through Friday. Wakes up at 4 AM leaves at 4:30 and opens the doors at 5, gets the pick up which for the teeth such as the wax, plastics and the tools they need to create dentures, partial dentures or implants. The product which is the teeth that they create has

to leave by 7 to 8:30 AM and have it ready for people for later in the day. Other labs work different according to their schedual of work. He is allowed to take vacations such as if you barely begin your job and after 6 months you get 1 week off and if you work for a year you get 3 weeks off also they pay you double for not taking your vacation days of sick days. Marilyn does not have any children but if it was one of his employees his would be flexibile enough for them to be with their child or children if they needed them for an emergency situation. Marilyn loves his job because he is truly driven to help people with their teeth and to make their appearance look better. The best part of his job is the fact that his making a difference not just for him and his work but for the people that actually need teeth and to make their smile come life once again. Continuing Education Marilyn believes that continuing education isnt required for the job but should be recommended because the more skills you know the better and the more youll know about your job and what goes on around you. But it is required to take the (CDT) Certified Dental Technician after you have done at least 5 years of hands on training. Education or skills that I should learn or know about for this field it to read a lot, art, ceramics, accounting, computer programming and foreign language for example few years back Latinos and Afghanistans used to work as dental technicians and the two cultures learned eachother language and helped the company with patients that only speak those languages incuding Chinese, Bosnian, German and Russian language. Other than the company in Utah where Marilyn works, they have other labs in other states such as Takoma, Washington, Rhino Nevada, California, Rhode Island and Arizona. They travel to these states to teach other technicians, create dentures or to recieve new tools for their lab. The publication keeps them updated by recieving newspaper and that they are trained very well and the lab association keep them updated by emails but the lab association arent doing so good because of their machines. Marilyns strategies for work are getting up early, learn more about his companions and to be standardized. Interview Analysis This interview introduced me to many different career ideas and also taught me a lot about how to conduct an interview. Analysis of Dental Laboratory Technician as my Career Choice From this interview, I realized that I almost qualified to begin as a dental technician type of job so I am very excited about that. I also learned about a alot of aspects of dental career that I never knew that existed. They fit my needs quite well. Marilyn suggested I should come back to the lab and check up on them and to leave my name and phone number as I left the interview. Analysis of my Interview Process Im a very shy person when it comes to meeting new people, and not a very well public speaker. I felt very nervous talking to someone that I didnt know very well but when I started speaking with Marilyn I started to feel more comfortable with the assignment and speaking with him. For the interview I wrote out my questions on a piece of paper and numbered them. This helped me stay on topic and get through the assignment. I was also able to glance down at my paper when I couldnt remember the next topic to ask. I didnt have to go over the questions too many times because I was getting comfortable but when I did it was because either he was talking fast or I couldnt understand him. I kept very well eye contact when I was asking questions. Marilyn did a very well job at keeping his asnwers on task because he knows his job very well. In the future ill probably use a piece of paper but type them up next time so itll look more better. If I iver conduct an interview again it will be way better and I dont think ill use a recorder because I want to see how well I can do without a recorder. It didnt feel awkard at all with the silence when I was writing my notes because thats whats part of an interview and I learned that a silent pause could make you seem smart in a way.

Juan Hernandez Interview Project: Part 2 Communication 1010-042 02-18-2014 At the end of our interview, I felt really comfortable and I wanted to start working there already. I didnt practice or read it out loud because I knew this is something that I wanted to do and that I knew at some point i will get comfortable. I was in no hurry to get finished with the interview, it felt like I wanted to learn more but I did for get take my evaluation form but it was no big deal because I called and asked if I could bring it in person and they were fine with that. All of all, I found this to be a useful assignment that will help me as I decide on a career path, and also as I conduct interviews in the workplace.

Letter of Thanks 746 Redmaple Rd. Salt Lake City, UT 84106 Feburary 21, 2014 Mr. Marilyn Manzullo 6069 South Highland Dr. Holiday, UT 84121 Dear Marilyn. Thank you so much for allowing me to interview you about your career. The answers you provided during our interview were really interesting to me. I admire your dedication to your job and the care your give to ensure the best for your patients. You make a superb role model to me. From this intervew I realized that reading about a career acannot give a full perspective about a day in life of someone in the field, but speaking with you has given me very important information. For example, I didnt know model work is the most important process to know about or how you guys dont do business with orthodontists anymore. You also opened my eyes to more fields that I can explore as I consider my own future career but I would rather much stick with this field. I appreciate you setting aside time for me, even though you have such a busy work schedule. You really helped me with my communication class. I learned so much about a dental technician and more about interviewing, which will definitely help me later in my future.

Sincerely, Juan Hernandez
