Noyce Mathematics Education Teaching Scholars at North Carolina State University Producing highly qualified mathematics teachers who are prepared to use technology and research-based practices in teaching high school mathematics, and have strong content understanding.

NOYCE SOCIAL
On April 24th, we had our 2013 2014 Noyce social at Boccis in Durham. It was great to see and catch up with Noyce scholars from all different cohorts. Thanks to Stephanie, Matthew, David, Katlyn, Greg, Jenna, Latoya, Will, and Karen for attending. A big thank you to Hollylynne Lee and Karen Hollebrands for the pizza!

SUMMER INSTITUTE
We are excited to be holding our first Summer Institute this year! Dates/Location: June 18 - June 20 at NC State Times: Wednesday, June 18th and Thursday, June 19th from 9:00 - 4:00; Friday, June 20 from 9:00-12:30 Stipend: $300/attendee. We will be conducting sessions based on your survey responses: use of small groups, student motivation and engagement, classroom management, communication, organization, discourse, assessment, students mathematical thinking.

We will also have focused sessions on Common Core Math I, II, and III, and best uses for different technologies in mathematics. If there is something you wanted to see that we have left off, please let us know.

CONGRATULATIONS
Karen Klein received the Sigma Xi Outstanding Mathematics Teacher Award! Katlyn VanReenen won the Prospective Teacher NCTM Conference Attendance Award to attend the annual national conference in New Orleans this year!

SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT


AP Conference: July 9 13, 2014 in Philadelphia, PA. If you have not been to a national conference and you either teach AP or are thinking about teaching AP, this may be for you. NCTM Interactive Institute: July 31 Aug 2, 2014 in Chicago, IL. Engaging Students in Learning: Mathematical Practices and Process Standards. This is targeted for grades 9 12, and would be helpful to anyone teaching common core math. NCTM Interactive Institute: July 7 9 in San Diego, CA. Algebra Readiness for Every Student. Even though this is targeted for grades 6 8, we have had teachers go to this before and say that it is helpful in thinking about ninth grade students as well. The NCSU College of Education will be holding its Beginning Teacher Institute for first through third year teachers August 11 13 at the Friday Institute. NCDPI and NCCAT offer summer institutes and professional development. DONT FORGET if you are finishing your second year of teaching and have not yet spent your professional development money, you need to submit a request by June 30. These conferences would be a great way to spend your money on some great professional development! GRANT OPPORTUNITIES DonorsChoose.org is a website in which teachers can post projects and donors can donate money toward the project. See their website for more details. NCTM offers grants and awards on a continual basis in various areas. NCCTM minigrants have a relatively simple application process, due September 15th. ONLINE PD NCTM offers E-seminars any time for a variety of topics, including: Can writing be the missing link for mathematical understanding? Implementing the 9-12 Common Core Standards with NCTM resources Using Multiple Representations in Algebra Using Jokes and Humor Effectively in the Mathematics Classroom If you are an NCTM member, these are FREE. If not, this is a good way to use your local PD money! RESOURCES These Common Core materials may be helpful in planning for your courses next year. The NCDPI wiki has links to resources like Inside Mathematics and Illustrative Mathematics. NCSU NOYCE ON THE WEB Please upload common core teaching materials that you find helpful to our Dropbox folder! Visit our Wiki to see what our staff and other scholars post that can be helpful. You can email Michelle or Emily to see if we have helpful material on a subject/content that we can post.
