NST 104 Spring 2014 FOODS AROUND THE WORLD PROJECT PROJECT PRESENTATION DATE: FRIDAY, APRIL 18TH

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to discuss how the socio-cultural, economic, and physical
environments impact diet and food intake in a specific country or region of the world and to identify how this diet impacts nutritional status. There are two components to the project a group presentation and individual paper. The project is worth a total of 20 points.

Group Presentation (15 points): In groups of 6, you will present a country or region of the world to
the class. This is a short, yet formal professional presentation lasting 7-9 minutes. Note that the class will be split in half for this project and presentations will take place in two separate classrooms.

Presentations should include the following:

Visual aids: Electronic slides (Powerpoint) or otherwise. Content covering socio-cultural, socioeconomic, and environmental factors that affect your country or regions cuisine and, in turn, the nutritional status of the population. You do not have enough time to cover all aspects, so you may want to focus on just a few. Creativity encouraged. References: May be included at end of presentation. Involvement from all group members is not mandatory, but is encouraged.

Individual Paper Description (5 points): Each group member must submit a 1-page summary
(double or single spaced) describing which aspect of the bicultural framework has been the most influential in shaping the diet of the individuals in your assigned region. One unique paper per student and references should be cited appropriately. No late write-ups will be accepted.

Sign-Up: Please sign-up for a group and country or region by March 21 at 5 pm. Sign-up by adding your
group to the spreadsheet using the following link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjczSE1GYOP8dEFzSHFwWkg4SmZQaG81UzZaU0Y2 SEE&usp=sharing. You may join any group that does not yet have 6 project members and you are responsible for reaching out to your group members. Any individual that does not sign up to a group by March 21st will be randomly assigned a group. For further questions about sign-ups, contact Jenna Segal at Jenna.Segal@berkeley.edu.

Send to instructor: Any electronic visual aid(s) along with country or region no later than Thursday
4/17 at 5pm. Electronic visual aids received after this deadline will result in deduction of points.

Present: On Friday, April 18. The class will be divided into half, Session A in 390 Hearst Mining
Complex (where lecture is held) and Session B in 20 Barrows Hall.

Papers: Individual printed papers are due at the time of your presentation. Points Possible: 20 points every group member will receive the same grade on the presentation but
will receive different points based on the individual paper submitted. See grading rubric for details.
