Activity 2 Clean Water

Purpose/ Background of the Activity

IET 120 Spring 2014

The purpose of this project is to give the people of Makurdi, Nigeria sanitary, reliable, and safe water to use for consumption. The problem of unsanitary water has plagued this region for many years and hopefully our efforts will resolve the problem found in this region. We feel it is necessary to provide safe water in order to improve the quality of life found in the region today. s of today the life e!pectancy of the male population is "# years and "$ for females with an infant mortality rate of %#&'%$&(. )urrently the percent of the population affected with *+, stands at -.#( and this is contributed to poor living conditions as well as the culture of the people who believe in multiple partner relationships. +t is important to include many people and some from a distance because while Makurdi may possess some or most of the resources they may not have the financial or intellectual capital and e!perience to get projects such as this off the ground.

Part One )ustomer .society/ The people of Makurdi, Nigeria need a way to obtain clean water, but the process to supply this essential necessity must be relatively cheap to obtain due to e!treme poverty conditions found in the area. Many projects have been started to supply the people of the region that haven0t been completed and many deaths occur each year due to consumption of what local call dirty water. +t is common for anyone in the region to know someone who has died from drinking water that wasn0t safe for consumption (1). Water is supplied to the region from the 1enue 2iver, but over the years this river has been e!tremely polluted. 3!amples is garbage being dumped into the river as well as raw sewage. 4or the households that do receive public water, the conditions aren0t much better. Many of the water treatment plants located in the city are well outdated and not properly maintained (2). nother condition plaguing the city system is contaminated pipes that cause the people consuming the water to become ill.

5roduct 6esign and 4unction 3!planation The material chosen are 5,) pipes delivering the water by pump to a water storage facility. There it is cleaned by dilute chlorine tablets. The water is hand pumped to and from the facility. The dome of the water storage facility is clear for two sustainable reasons. %./ The sun provides the light for the workers to see and work the small facility and so no power is needed. 7./ The solar radiation also helps to purify water as well. The location of Makurdi is very close to the equator where solar radiation is more concentrated. The average temperature in Makurdi is 874.

The new small plant does not require electric energy, though that can be implemented at a later date through electronic pumps and filtration if desired. Nigeria, though a third world country isn0t completely without resources. +ndustries include9 :crude oil, coal, tin, columbite; palm oil, peanuts, cotton, rubber, wood; hides and skins, te!tiles, cement and other construction materials, food products, footwear, chemicals, fertili<er, printing, ceramics, steel, small commercial ship construction and repair.= (4) Natural resources include9 :natural gas, petroleum, tin, columbite, iron ore, coal, limestone, lead, <inc, arable land=. ?verview9 Water is brought in to chamber % via 5,) pipe in the water treatment facility. +t is treated here by solar radiation via clear dome@roof as well as chlorine in chamber two. The toothpicks represent hand pumps local cans use to bring the water to them from chamber #. The straws represent buried pvp pipes and the toothpicks are hand pumps spread out throughout an area.

)hamber % is dirty water. valve lets the water flow to chamber 7 where it receives chlorine treatment. The treated water flows to chamber # by another valve between chambers 7 and # where water is ready to be pumped out to residents. This allows more dirty water to flow from chamber % to chamber 7. The entire time due to the clear ceiling and being close the equator allows solar radiation to help clean the water as well as light the interior for the workers to do the valve work.

ffordable Water manufactures a cheap and easy to assemble water screen filtering product that goes on the ends of the 5,) pipes that keeps grass, insects, paper and other debris out of the facility. 5rocesses include9 )utting of nylon and polyester mesh filtering. 2olls of nylon and polyester mesh filtering are the primary material used. These are placed on our machine to roll out on the conveyor belt. ?rders are placed using a computer system that basically acts on lean Banban. s each roll is scanned by bar code for use, it is decremented in the system by %. t a predetermined level a report is auto emailed to inventory control. +f the email does not come at an anticipated interval, the level are checked and adjustments can be made. This allow us to keep costs low using Dust +n Time principles. ?ur floor design@layout9
