Case 2

Subject(s): Science--Natural Disasters Grade level(s):4th Author(s): Allie Kontor, Natalie Bengert, Kassey Dickman Learning Environment The lesson plan is designed to be taught to at-risk children in grades 4 through 10 who are a part of an organization on Purdues campus called College Mentors for Kids, where the students pair with buddies, or students of Purdue University to mentor them. The lessons the students are taught are typically in a classroom setting in small groups and learn about relevant subjects within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The content of this lesson has a powerpoint to help the students fully understand what a natural resource is, how to conserve them, and how to identify them around the world/in their own community Teaching students to be able to correctly identify natural resources and their uses Through the power point and activity, students should be able to give examples of specific ways to conserve each type of natural resource (within and outside their community), Given the information through MindMup, students should be able to describe at least 3 types of natural resources Given examples via the power point and outdoor activity, students should recognize that humans have used a surplus of natural resources, and be able to translate these ideas to real life in outside activity. Explain ways to conserve natural resources Identify different types of natural resources (around the world as well as in their community) Identify changes in the environment related to natural resources (in good ways and bad)

Overview Objectives

Standards

Science Standards SCI.4.2.4 2010 Investigate earth materials that serve as natural resources and gather data to determine which ones are limited by supply. SCI.4.2.5 2010 Describe methods that humans currently use to extend the use of natural resources. SCI.4.2.6 2010 Describe ways in which humans have changed the natural environment. Explain if these changes have been detrimental or beneficial.

English Standards Advanced (Level 4): Identify and use knowledge of most spelling patterns while reading. ELP.2.1.26 2003 Advanced (Level 4): Identify some words that have multiple meanings. ELP.2.1.30 2003 Fluent English Proficient (Level 5): Identify and use knowledge of spelling patterns while reading. Materials Projector for the powerpoint White board Dry erase markers Internet access for youtube video Worksheet for extended learning outside activity Clipboard for students to write on worksheet Pencil for worksheet 1. Opening with asking What Natural Resources are (opening slide of Powerpoint) 2. Using Web 2.0 tool (MindMupin powerpoint) to map out a diagram of what students already know about natural resources 3. Show Natural Resource Youtube video 4. Finish rest of Natural Resource Powerpoint 5. Go outside for Learning activity/worksheet 6. Come back inside 7. Brief reflection/ go over worksheet 8. Board Races activitynaming natural resources/ways of conservation; students are divided into teams and go head to head to be the first one to answer natural resource questions given by a buddy and write it correctly on the board. The worksheet will be graded on completion (3 points) based on if the student has shown they have put in the effort of completing the entire sheet. Students get points that contribute to an overall total that is summed up at the end of the year to win prizes.
