High-Performance Brain Controlled Interfaces

In the topic " High-Performance Brain Controlled Interfaces-Recent progress" Dr.Andrew Schnoutz speaks about the High performance neural prosthetics. The topic is mainly about the brain control movement. This brain movement is picturised using a neural machine which can observe the movement of the brain on any part of the body for example an arm, a leg etc. To understand the complex patterns of the neuron networks work Dr.Andrew shows a complicated picture of cortex tissue, connected with many other neurons. Each neuron receives input from other neuron on the dendroid circuit undergoes a chemical synopses that activates the brain. Typically there are 10,000 inputs to one neuron and there are millions of neurons in a cortex tissue. By placing an electron at the neuron the electric field produced by the neuron can be found out. The author explains the reason behind the capability of a neuron receiving 10,000 inputs when it is fired. The neuron has some deflections inside it called as synapse which under normal conditions are under a threshold level, but when a neuron is fired it bumps up crossing the threshold level. For an action potential to occur many synapses have to be active together so that even action potentials are all or none, the more often synapses get together , more often neuron fires. The concept of the algorithm is comparison of a fired label to independent variable, and tuning as a probability density function. Scientific basis includes geometric representation of similarity, natural movement can be decoded based on the movement direction that is by coordinating system origin located on the moving effectors and continuous coding. The movement or the action performed by us reflects the behavioral output. Later he demonstrated a video which shows how electrodes have been put into a monkeys head and which tells the velocity of hand movement giving a 4 dimensions making the equation a much more complicated Dr.Andrew showed a video where they performed a brain computer interface research a UPMC rehabilitation institute using the robot arm to note the interactions. And the author also shows a video in which the movement of the neuron fire with the modulating movement of the fist of a woman. They plugged the brain of the woman with the computer which in turn is connected to the robotic arms, to see whether the woman can control the robotic arms with her thoughts, and surprisingly, the robotic arms movement is in accordance with the thoughts of the woman.
