Be Scam Smart by learning about the psychology of a scam, how to spot fraudulent behavior, common scams that target seniors, and how to fight identity theft. UF Health Study: We are looking for adult men to participate in a 75 minute study about oral cancer and health. To Participate you must be a man who is 40 years or older, live in North Central Florida and smokes tobacco. Participants will be paid $50 for participation and receive the opportunity to get a free oral-cancer screening. Please call 1-866-295-5640 Leave a message and we will call back! Volunteer with UF Health: Join Lindsay Krieg, director of Volunteer Services to learn more about the roles our volunteers play and if you would be a good fit! Join us for breakfast danishes and coffee while we explore volunteer opportunities, answer questions and share some of the wonderful work our volunteers are currently doing! Date: May 13th, 2014 Time: 10:00 AM Meals available at the Senior Center! We offer Subway To-Go lunches for $5 per box. Boxed meals consist of a regular 6 cold sub, chips and a cookie. All served individually with a mayo/mustard packet, napkin and a mint inside a stackable box. You may choose Black Forest Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, Tuna or Veggie Delight. Served on white or wheat bread with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. We do ask that you eat at the multipurpose room tables or a classroom - not in the general seating areas or carpeted rooms. Monthly Programs:
AARP Monthly Meeting The AARP monthly meeting will be held on Monday, May 5th beginning at 10:00 AM. This months speaker will be Wendy Wilber, Environmental Horticulture Agent. AARP Driving Safety Class - Open to all seniors 55 and over, the objectives of the course include: understanding the effects of aging on driving, learning defensive driving strategies aimed at reducing the likelihood of being involved in a crash, and updating knowledge of the rules of the road. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Please contact 352-333-3036 to register. Wednesday, May 21st , 9:00AM 3:30PM [Shands HealthCare Wellness Education Room @ the SRC]. Advance Directives: Volunteer Speakers Bureau Do you know how to talk to your loved ones about difficult life situations? Attend a free workshop to understand how to complete your Advance Directives. Bridge Groups: Duplicate Bridge Group - For further information about this Duplicate Bridge Group, contact Ray at 352-284-0210. Duplicate Bridge will be played on May 19th 10:00AM 3:00PM Laura Stewart Bridge Club - The Laura Stewart Bridge Group meets every Tuesday 9:00AM 2:00PM Chess Club Learn to Play Exceptional Chess - Learning classes will be held for 1 hour with Chess Play to follow instructions. Learn chess principles, chess notion, chess ideas, pawn structure, opening strategies, middle game strategies, end game strategies, devastating moves & attacks, and chess traps, swindles and pitfalls (how to make and avoid them). Call Ken at 386-266-2691 to reserve a seat. The Chess Club meets every Wednesday. Chess instruction 9:30 - 10:45 & Game Play from 10:45AM - 12:00PM. Craft class every 1st and 3rd Thursday at 12:30 PM Craft/Scrapbooking/ Card Making Workshop - Bring your favorite project, whether it is crochet, knitting, working on an album, plastic canvas, making cards or whatever else you are into at the moment. Come and enjoy creating while visiting with friends....Some limited supplies will be available for your use. There will be a variety of scrapbooking and card making supplies for sale at a fraction of retail cost. Hope you can join us for a fun afternoon. See you there. Dance for Life Long Health - These classes are organized around themes and use dance techniques from jazz, modern, and various national styles that contribute to experiencing the joy of rhythmic motion. Each week we flex physical, mental, and imaginative muscles to create a new dance. Dance for Life Long Health is held every Tuesday @ 11:30AM

Encore Dancers Workshop Description - Encore Dancers Workshop provides mature dancers with an opportunity to continue their practice in an adult- friendly environment. Rusti Brandman, UF dance faculty emerita and Shands Arts in Medicine dancer in residence, will facilitate sessions and expects that the participants will be instrumental in determining the direction of the program. The initial plan is that the weekly sessions will consist of warm up, skills and conditioning, creative exercises, and dance phrase work using concepts primarily from ballet and modern dance. The classes will focus on fun, community, and goals important to the group. If you are dancing and/or have danced in your recent or even distant past, please join us and keep on dancing forever. Wear comfortable clothing. Flexible shoes or stockings or bare feet are suggested. A digital services librarian will be there to answer one-on-one questions concerning your Kindle, Nook, iPad, or any reading device you bring with you. This class will be on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month 2:00PM 5:00PM. iDevices: Beginner If you have an iDevice like an iPad, iPod, or iPhone but you dont use it as much as you would like because it is too mystifying, this course can help you understand whats going on. This course is intended for users who want to get more familiar with the basics. Well explore the iPad and try to de-mystify it for you. This is a hands on, open format course and topics will vary based on class needs. Bring your iDevice and all your user names and passwords. Class size is limited to 5 people. Dates: Tuesday, May 6th Time: 9 am 11 am Please register at 352-265-9040 iDevices - Advanced If you know the basics of your iDevice and want to know more, this course is for you. iDevices have many features that can make them easier to use and more useful. Knit & Crochet If you are interested in learning how to knit or crochet or are experienced and would like to join a group, this is the course for you. Bring your G hook and other supplies. All skill levels are welcomed. Will teach. Class will be held every Wednesday @ 2pm. Mah Jong (Chinese Version) - Everyone is welcome. Well teach you how to play. Needle Work Group Bring your favorite needle work project, whether it be crochet, knitting, embroidery or whatever you are into. Come enjoy some needle work fun while visiting friends. You will need to bring your own supplies. This group is for people who are experienced with needle work and want to meet with a group for more enjoyment. We hope to see you there! Every Tuesday from 9 AM to 11 AM @ the SRC No registration is required. New Member Orientation New Member Orientation to all who are new to the Senior Recreation Center or those who are interested in learning more about the SRC, ElderCare of Alachua County, and our programs. Please join us for an informative look at the organization and its role in the Gainesville community. This months orientation will be held May 14th @ 9:00 AM Parkinsons Exercise Program- This program is specifically tailored to Persons with Parkinsons (PWP). It is designed to help overcome physical limitations, improve mobility, flexibility and balance, restore confidence and develop camaraderie among participants. The program is 75-90 minutes in duration and includes both sitting and standing exercise routines. Participants with limited mobility should be accompanied by their caregiver. Please wear comfortable clothing (shorts, tee-shirt, and athletic shoes). The program is every Tuesday & Friday at 9:30 AM Pinochle Club Come enjoy a fun game of cards with new friends. Pinochle Club meets every Wednesday @ 2:00PM 4:00PM. There will be a tournament during the first three weeks of May.

PrimeTime Institute (PTI) - PTI is a program of ElderCare of Alachua County, a non-profit organization providing various other services for seniors such as Meals-on-Wheels, Alz Place, etc. All PTI programs and activities are planned and presented entirely by volunteer members and speakers, with expenses supported by annual membership fees of $20. Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild The Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of quilting and related arts for individuals of North Central Florida through education, inspiration and information. Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild meet every Monday and Thursday beginning @ 9:00AM - QACDG meets monthly on the first Thursday of each month from 9:30 am to noon, at the Senior Recreation Center. Rummikub Join friends for a fun game of Rummikub, a tile based game ideal for 2 or more players. A great combination of strategy and luck makes Rummikub the perfect game for all ages. Every Wednesday, 9 am 12 pm @ the SRC. Salsa Dancing Learn to move with the rhythm of the music and get in some great exercise! No rules except have fun! Class is taught by a native of Venezuela and Latin dancer. Class is held every Wednesday @ 3 pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Samsung Galaxy: Beginner - If you have a Samsung Galaxy smart device but you don't use it as much as you would like because it is too mystifying, this course can help you understand what's going on. This course is intended for users who want to get more familiar with the basics. Bring your device and all your user names and passwords. We'll explore the basic operations and try to demystify it for you. This is a hands on, open format course and topics will vary based on class needs. SHINE Counselors empower Florida seniors and the disabled to make informed healthcare choices. Are you new to Medicare? SHINE meets every 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month @ 9:00AM Spanish Class for Beginners Learn a new language and enjoy socialization. Class will be every Wednesday from 1 pm to 2 pm. Stroke Victors & Caregiver Support Group A group for stroke victors and their caregivers to encourage and support one another in their quest to find a new normal after suffering a stroke. Our goal is to be a one-stop place to get information about strokes for those in our community. We have the support of the UF speech pathology program. We meet weekly from 3:30 to 5 on Thursdays at the Senior Recreation Center. Stamping & Card making Creating cards and stamping techniques. Bring you current project and supplies. This month the class will be on May 13th from 1:00 PM 4:00 PM. Tai Chi: Paul Campbell is teaching a 10 week Tai Chi Chuan program every Friday at 11:30 AM called the Eight Ways. Paul has been teaching Tai Chi Chuan in Gainesville, as well as throughout the US and Europe since 1977. He is featured in the February Senior Times Magazine. Woodcarving & Whittling Learn how to carve character, dogs, cats, floral, human face, walking sticks, pipes, and more. Promote social interaction, stimulate your brain, and eye-hand coordination while having fun and learning a new skill! Woodcarving & Whittling will be on every Thursday @ 9:00AM 12:00 PM

Yoga Yoga promotes health, balance, and general wellness for all who practice. This is a specially designed Yoga program for the benefit of older adults. Please wear comfortable clothes. Preregistration and medical consent form is required. Yoga class is held with Shivani on Monday and Friday, 10:00-11:15 and Yoga with Susan on Tuesday, 9:45-11:00. Chair Yoga Join us for an hour chair yoga class. Increase flexibility, decrease pain, relax, and enhance your sense of well-being. We will move from breathing and seated relaxation through gentle seated exercises and yoga poses for the upper and lower body, to carefully guided standing postures using the chair. Please bring a yoga mat and towel are required (The Senior Recreation Center does have yoga mats to loan to members free of charge.) Pre-registration and medical consent form is required. Zumba Gold - The Zumba Gold Fitness program is second to none. It is an innovative, fun and exciting program. It was designed for the active older adult. The main difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba Basic is Zumba Gold is done at a lower intensity, not as fast, but it certainly is as fun. Zumba is held Monday @ 3:00PM, Wednesday @ 10:00AM, and Friday @ 1:00 PM [Multipurpose Room].

Fridays Zumba class is sponsored by ElderCare of Alachua County The Senior Recreation Center is located at 5701 NW 34th Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32653 and is open Monday Friday from 8:00AM 5:00PM. All classes are free to any resident of Alachua County 60+, unless otherwise noted. In addition to these classes we always have a game room, computer room, and fitness center which are all open to members during regular business hours. The Fitness Center is offered to Alachua County Residents 55+ for $63.60 annually [prorated from the time of registration] which includes working with our Fitness Supervisor who is there to assist members from 8:00AM 12:00PM daily.
