In next month's issue of Newman News we will have information on how you can be part of the Mrs Australia Quest and also let you know more about what Raewyn did to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and what her obligations are as the current title holder.

Newman Officially has a Mrs Australia Winner

Raewyn Armstrong entered the Mrs Australia Quest which is different to all other "beauty pageants" as it is about the beauty inside the person that really counts. The Quest is about raising awareness of Ovarian Cancer. Raewyn survived Hodgkin's Lymphoma and has been in remission eleven years. Her Grandmother died of ovarian cancer so it is close to her heart to raise awareness. The Mrs Australia Quest has four opportunities to be crowned which include Mrs World, Mrs Universe, Mrs International and Mrs Earth. Raewyn won the Mrs Universe section of the Mrs Australia Quest and now will compete for the International Title in Kuala Lumpur in a few months' time. Raewyn's fundraising efforts were also acknowledged as she was the highest

To encourage community involvement and donations to charities by its staff, BHP Billiton is offering to match donations 2:1 rather than 1:1. For example, if an employee wishes to donate $1,000 to Red Cross, BHPB will match that with a $2,000 donation. Additionally, volunteer hours undertaken by an employee BHPB will donate $20 per hour to that organisation as opposed to the previous $10. The essential need for volunteers has recently been highlighted with many organisations struggling to form an adequate committee that may threaten closure and discontinuation of many service organisations. The accumulation of these amounts can greatly benefit organisations. Employees are strongly encouraged to submit their claims.

Centrals Winner

Centrals Football Club would like to announce the winner of their Last Man Standing competition drawn on 5 April 2014 at Centrals Football Club was Joel Yates. Congratulations to Joel!

National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week will be held between 6-13 July this year. The emergence of Aboriginal groups which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians in the 1920s saw the origin of NAIDOC. Newman Mainstreet Project will be coordinating this years activities. If you or your organisation wish to become involved, please email Nic Willis on newmanmainst@westnet.com.au or call 9177 8290.

The Newman Aquatic Centre has had several incidents of children being unattended at the pool. All year around, pool safety is essential. While there are life guides at the pool, they can not be everywhere and parents are ultimately responsible. Stay within arms reach of your children and remain alert. If you know of families who let their children go to the pool unattended consider approaching them with some advice or offer to take their children with you.

Staying Safe with the Saint

By Wendy Hagan Newman St. John Ambulance wants to ensure that we all stay safe these holidays. Unfortunately most times we think about accidents and emergencies only when we are actually faced with one. Do not leave the wellbeing of those you know and love to chance. Be prepared. Newman has some of the most amazing locations to discover but they are often in remote areas away from immediate access. If you are going rock climbing, four wheel driving or exploring; ensure that you tell someone when you are leaving, where you are going and when you should be back. Have you packed adequately? We never want to forget the egg flip or oil for the BBQ but how often is a first aid kit on the items to be packed list? Newman St. John Ambulance has an amazing array of kits, each specialised to meet your work, leisure and home needs. Due to our location, the Motoring OffRoad kit is always popular with 4WD driving enthusiasts and those who travel long distances. These kits will allow you to deal with minor incidents and road trauma before ambulance assistance. If two wheels are more your speed, a great addition to your kits is the Sam Splint which is a light weight, waterproof, versatile, latex free splint which may be used on a range of areas where immobilisation is required. The Sam Splint easily fits in your first aid kit or back pack. If you are unsure what first aid resources you should take when travelling these holidays, come on down to the Newman St. John Ambulance Sub Centre and they offer advice and assistance. The Day the Rodeo Came to Town

With gates opening at 2 pm on Saturday 12 April the Junior Rodeo kicked off. The future of tomorrows rodeo really put up some great competition. The spectators rolled in directly and the grounds were busting by the time the main commenced at 6 pm. The Onsite Equipment Hire ABCRA Junior Grand Entry team hit the arena followed by the ABCRA Grand Entry Team, WA Rodeo Queen, All Round Cowboys / Cowgirls and the anthem was ridden by our freshly crowned Rodeo Princess Jessinta Oldham and the WA ABCRA Queen Penny Malone. The competition was close in some of the rough stock events and the ladies barrels came down to split seconds between Melissa Maxwell and (Junior) Janine Mongoo who is now able to compete in Open ladies events as she has reached the age of 16. The arena pretty much ran from 2 pm to 9 pm and then Renegade entertained the night away. It was great to see a lot of visitors come into town from surrounding stations, Panna, Karratha, Hedland, Tom Price, Parra, Onslow etc. They were a great crowd.

A very apt word to use during the wet season here in Newman. Petrichor is defined as the distinct scent of rain on dry earth after a long warm dry spell. The terms was coined in 1964 by two Australian researchers and used in the journal Nature. Wikipedia (always a very reliable source) claim that the authors describe the smells derivation being from an oil exuded by certain plants during dry periods, whereupon it is absorbed by clay-

A Suitable Word: Petrichor

based soils and rocks. During rain, the oil is released into the air along with another compound ... which is emitted by wet soil, producing the distinctive scent; ozone may also be present if there is lightning. In a follow-up paper, Bear and Thomas (1965) showed that the oil retards seed germination and early plant growth. This would indicate that the plants exude the oil in order to safeguard the seeds from germination under duress.

Lions Quiz Night

By Danielle Cochrane The annual Newman Lions Club Quiz Night was held on Saturday 22 March at The Newman Club. After settling in to tables, the seven competitive teams on the night were ready for the onslaught of questions. There were 10 rounds of 10 questions competently read out by the quiz mistress for the night, Danielle Cochrane. The rounds covered topics like New Zealand, history, music, Australia and of course the obligatory local Newman round of questions. Between some of the rounds we had Who am I? questions which stumped the patrons and some were only solved after the final clue was read out. A few games were also played including heads and tails and coin toss. Around $2,000 raised on the evening went to support The Royal Flying Doctor Service. The winning table for the night even donated back their winnings for the cause.

Kye Awarded for Lions Courage

Kye Symonds was awarded a Lions Children of Courage Award in Perth on 13 April. The Newman Lions Club sponsored three airfares and two nights accommodation so he could attend the ceremony with his parents. As with all children, Kye has faced many challenges with the transition from primary to secondary school: for the past seven years of his schooling he has had one class, one teacher and same students in his class, to a whole new environment, different class for each subject, different teachers and students. What makes Kyes challenge more impressive is that he has Down Syndrome. He has learned about different boundaries with different people, social skills - hand shakes instead of personal contact (hugging other students), meeting and greeting teachers, communicating his needs in different ways through sign and verbal skills, having electives different subjects like home economics, wood work, drama, music and computer skills. He can now type his name and password; surf the net, he can cut and paste and make his own books. He can now read simple carrier phrase sentences. He practices his life skills within the school: money skills, operation of every day appliances, cooking skills, social skills, self-esteem and problem solving skills. Kye has received awards at Newman Senior High School for his community work within the school and for his 100% attendance throughout the year. He is a great role model to the other students.

The Garden Martu Farm Open Day

On May 17 2014 between 10 am and 2 pm The Garden Martu Farm, located on Cowra Avenue, will be hosting its first Open Day. With plenty of activities, food, drinks and performances, it is hoped that the introduction to the entire community of The Garden will be one that initiates the beginning of great things to come. 'The Garden' is a community driven project bringing together people from every walk of life to grow and nurture a garden from the ground up. It offers the chance to plant, maintain and sustain a number of fruit, vegetable and other plant varieties, together as a unified community. The Garden hopes to not only build relationships with one another, but to also share the joy of watching our combined efforts grow into something beautiful: a community garden! With no limitations on what can be achieved and no boundaries on who can be involved, The Garden Martu Farm will be the perfect space not just for watching things grow, but sharing stories, relaxing and enjoying the great outdoors in the most organic and wholesome way. If you would like to be involved or would like more information on what The Garden Martu Farm is all about, please follow them on FaceBook at www.facebook.com/ TheGarden.MartuFarm or send an email to our_communitygarden@outlook.com and remember, from little things, BIG things grow!

Ladies Night at The Beach

By Nicole Willis The Beach was transformed on Saturday 29 March by a wide array of Party Plan stalls. The purpose of the night was to showcase what is available in town as far as home Party Plan businesses, as there are always people asking on Facebook for information about who sells this and that. The night was targeted at the women, to give them an opportunity to browse or shop without the distraction of partners or children whinging about wanting to go home and by all accounts it was a success with approximately 75 women attending. With such a great turnout Newman Mainstreet Projects market committee are considering making this a biannual event. With over twelve stalls set up, there was a range of businesses from Thermomix to clothing, jewellery, scrapbooking, Tupperware, make-up and something to set the ambience. The Party Planners not only made sales on the night but said that demonstrations were also booked that may not have been if they had not attended the night. Events like this would not be made possible without the dedication from Mainstreets market committee headed by Renae Smith. Thank-you Renae and all the other volunteers who contributed on the night and, of course, to the wonderful ladies who help inform people of such events by undertaking letterbox distribution.

Recovery Orders - How can I get my child back?

By J. Leonie Bailey, Principal Solicitor, DeLancey Legal If a child has been wrongfully retained or removed by a person, it is possible to make an application to the Court for a Recovery Order directing that the child be returned. When making an application it is necessary to file an Affidavit telling the Court exactly what has happened. If you are concerned for the welfare of the child, or you think they may be removed from Australia, it is important to explain to the Court that the application should be heard urgently. If the Court believes the matter is very urgent, you may be given a hearing on the day you file your application and without the other person being present or knowing about your application. This is often done if the Court believes the other person may leave the country or go into hiding with the child should they become aware of the application. If appropriate, the Court may make an order directing the Police to arrange for the return of the child. Situations where a recovery order can be applied for include: When the child normally lives with you and spends time with another person and that person refuses to return the child at the end of a visit If the child has been taken to live in a remote location or interstate without your consent, even if you are the parent the child does not live with fulltime If the child does not normally spend time with the other person and that person has taken the child and is refusing to return them You can apply for a recovery order if you are one of the following categories of people: A person who has parenting orders from the Family Court in place about the child A person who is concerned with the care, welfare or development of the child. This would include a parent who does not have Family Court orders in place. A grandparent of the child. The Court can make an order directing the child be returned to a: Parent or grandparent of a child; Person who has a parenting order that states the child lives with, spends time with or communicates with that person; or a Person who has parental responsibility for the child. You should seek legal advice if you need to file an Application for a Recovery Order.

By Sonya Matheson Easter is part of the Christian calendar celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is symbolised through birth and renewal, hence, the Easter egg. The Easter bunny was thought to have originated through the German Lutherans with the rabbit judging childrens behaviour; similar to Santas naughty or nice.

Easter in Newman this year kicked off early with Woolworths Telethon fundraiser including crafts and entertainment for the children with appearances by Peppa Pig, Strawberry Shortcake and the lion from Madagascar, and the lovely fairy Sandra. The Shire of East Pilbara hosted an Easter egg hunt and much other fun at the Newman Aquatic Centre enjoyed by many!

Road Toll

Chocolate indulgence Photograph by Anita Goodwin a per capita basis, we are still significantly above the national average. Some of this States reduction has been attributed to the Liberal-National Governments decision to utilise 100% of speed and red light camera revenue to the Road Trauma Trust Account, which has enabled enforcement of road safety, regional road improvements and mobilisation to improve. While a recent Perth Now article claimed that the Great Northern Highway near Newman as WAs worst road for crashes resulting in death, the 2013 statistics released by the Office of Road Safety show the Pilbara as having the lowest fatalities out of the regional areas of Western Australia, in fact and per capita, being five in that year. Still five too many! While driver inattention, speed, fatigue and alcohol are common causes of accidents the obvious precautions are not being adhered to. In regional WA in 2013, 29% of the motor vehicle occupants who died were recorded as not wearing a seat belt or appropriate child restraint. Around 12% of the States motorcyclist fatalities and one third of bicycle riders were recorded as not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Stay safe all year around.

By Sonya Matheson Over Easter, as during all holiday seasons, we are reminded to undertake safe driving to prevent the horrible tragedies that happen all too frequently. While over the last 15 years, people dying on our States roads has been decreasing on

Joining thousands across the State, teachers, support staff and families undertook a Community Day of Action to campaign against the Barnett Government funding cuts to public schools. A number of cuts to staff and programs in the 201314 budget were announced and there is more to come. State wide, the cuts to education equal $180 million, 600 full time equivalent (FTE) reduction in teaching staff and 500 education assistant and support staff will be lost. In May, the State Government is set to release the 2014-15 State Budget and Colin Barnett has flagged further cuts to public schools. Marie Klein, a teacher at Newman Senior High School and SSTUWA Union Rep at NSHS,advises that They will impact on our ability to deliver what your kids and grandkids deserve; equitable access to a high quality, well-funded public education. The recently announced $500 million increase in GST revenue provides Colin Barnett with an opportunity to re-establish his commitment to education and return the $180 million he has cut from public schools. Further, schools that receive reduced SSPRA (School Support Program Resources Allocation) funding in 2014, will see that funding completely removed in 2015. Schools who have managed to cover the cuts through budgetary management this year will be doing so under duress and cannot be expected to continue this in the future. The State Government argues that the cutbacks are in preparation for the introduction of a new student-centred funding model to be introduced in 2015. The State Schools Teachers Union of Western Australia (SSTUWA) does not oppose a student-centred funding model similar to that outlined in the Gonski Report, but to introduce this model on top of these will permanently short change school budgets. Impacts from education cuts can be clearly seen in the form of larger class sizes, a reduction in subject options, less individual support for students, resource reductions as well as reductions in other programs and support workers. Marie Klein said, We are protesting this decision the decision to cut the education budget. We are standing up for our public schools and letting the government we will not accept these cuts in our schools. The Community Day of Action helped raise the education funding issue on peoples agenda and hopefully some awareness in the State Parliament.

Teachers, parents and students unite to campaign against education funding cuts.
