Black and White CD Cover

Grade: 9-12 Curriculum Area: Visual Art Unit of Study/Art history/Cultural context: Elements of Art: Contrast, Positive & Negative Space SPI's/Standards of Art: TN: 1.1.1-1.1.4, 1.3.1-.1.3.4, 1.4.1-1.4.4, 2.1.1-2.1.4, 6.1.1 (music)

Objectives: Students will learn about positive and negative space, and contrast. They will show understanding by creating a black-andwhite design with these elements. (1.1-2.1) Students will relate to the work by choosing a musical artist (or making their own) to make a CD cover for and include musical elements. (6.1.1) Students will practice creating effective composition. (2.1-4) Students will learn to apply India ink using calligraphy pens onto watercolor paper. (1.1.1-4)

Materials: Paper for sketch India Ink Calligraphy Pens Quill tips Pencil Eraser 9x12 watercolor paper

Assessment Strategies: Questions and responses during presentation to show understanding. Individual monitoring during guided and independent practice (double-check comprehension). Rubric for the final project: scoring based on how well Objectives were met in the project. (Good effort; cleanliness and craftsmanship; establish positive and negative space; show contrast between black and white spaces; completion %.) At the end of the semester, the final exam will include questions about Pos./Neg. Space and Contrast.

Guided Learning Steps: PowerPoint Presentation Introduce the element of Positive and Negative Space. Students will see examples and point out which is which. Students will also see examples of images with high and low contrast. Examples of previous projects will be shown, along with directions for the project. Demonstration/Guided Practice Students will draw four shapes repeating to the edge of paper (e.g. bulls eye), then divide the paper into five sections. The lines can be diagonal, vertical, or horizontal. Then they must color in alternating pieces with either black, or leave it white. This is reminiscent of the Op Art lessons. They will understand showing contrast between dark and light areas. Individual Practice (Project) [2 days] Students will research music they like, or make up their own based on other hobbies, to imagine a CD cover they will create. They must sketch their ideas and color it in with black marker to get an idea of how it will look. Then, re-draw the final design onto the watercolor paper and color it in using India ink. Different tips allow for smaller details/line work, while brushes are used to fill in large areas with the ink. Divide the image like in the practice, and alternate black and white spaces. There cannot be direct copies of albums, and images chosen must represent the musician they have chosen (e.g. a drawing of a beetle for The Beatles). Reflection Students will discuss their musical and design choices.

Vocab: contrast, positive and negative space, composition, India ink, calligraphy, quill tips

Essential Questions: 1. What is positive and negative space? What is contrast? a. Positive space is the object in a picture; negative space is the area surrounding the object. Contrast is intensity of light areas against darks areas. 2. How does composition affect how your image looks? a. With too little design, it looks empty and stagnant. Too much design, and it will be too busy and hard to look at, or discern fine details. There must be a balance. General rule of thumb in art is to not put things dead center, like faces. Off-center gives more interest. 3. How does the image relate to the musician/band? 4. What do you think goes into the design of a CD cover?
