M. Adeel Sohail 14767 IBF Assignment (FIN201A) Seminar The seminar was presented by Mr. Quaid Jauhar.

He has done Chemical Engineering and MBA from IBA Karachi. Personal Development was what gained his attention. The seminar consisted of several topics, but it basically revolved around the goals and how to achieve them. Here are a few topics which were discussed in the session: He discussed the reasons why people fail. He told that by the age of 65, 95% of us are dead and only 5% would succeed. When obstacles arise people should change their direction. In 1979, Harvard University conducted a study on an MBA student. The study is as follows: Choice, not chance, determines destiny: Think what you want to be. Whatever thoughts come in your mind, we should write them down. Success is an inside job and it starts from what you think about. Set and Write Your Goals: Believe in yourself Set your goals and write them down (He emphasized on taking notes a lot, as this helps students retain what is being taught.) 97% of us do not have goals, he said.

Why People Dont Set Goals? They dont realize the importance of goals They dont know how to set goals They fear failure They fear rejection

He also told a key to establish some smart goals, this is as follows: Be specific, be measurable, be attainable, be relevant, and be time-based. He told us to help each other in any manner possible. He emphasized on understanding and helping colleagues, friends, and even family members. He is totally against making jokes on others and their behaviors or goals.

He focused on emotions too. He said that if we are emotionally attached to some goals, it is more likely that we achieve them. He also gave an example of Aladdin also but I could not understand. He also discussed what our subconscious and conscious mind is by the help of some simple diagrams via multimedia. The diagram was similar to a dart board. The very outer circle is the environment, the inner circle is the conscious mind, and the part in the center is the subconscious mind. He described major differences in child stage and adult stage relating to these diagrams. To be a good decision maker, two-third of the time you should listen and one-third of the time you should speak, he argued. We should take control of our subconscious mind by programming it, by learning, and also by visualizing. In the end, he showed us an interesting slide which consisted of a man walking on a road in a direction. The man is seen as going in a positive direction. But, a hand comes over and it picks the man up and brings him back to where he started his walk. He told us that this is what exactly is happening with all of us today. People cannot see you happy, contended, and successful. They only discourage you in every phase and matter of life.
