CO2 Plane
Design Brief
Your Engineering Firm has been approached by the Boeing Corporation to build a plane that will be lightweight and able carry many passengers comfortably. Boeing has a great reputation for their planes and has heard about the great work that Northern Highlands Engineering Group has done with their tower, maglev, and crash test builds. The planes must travel between New York City and a far away Mediterranean exotic island. They must be super sonic (travel faster than the speed of sound) because the ultimate goal for the plane is to replace the Due Dates

Design Criteria
The vehicle prototype can measure only 1-1/2 inches wide and have a minimum length of 20. The vehicle will use a powerful 8 gram CO2 cartridge as the means of propulsion The vehicle must travel a specific length of a 30 in the positive (forward) direction
Design Constraints
You must use only the material Is supplied by the teacher to construct the CO2 Plane. The body of the vehicle must be constructed of one piece of Styrofoam that measures 22 inches long by 1-1/2 inches wide. The Styrofoam fuselage can be cut and shaped anyway possible to create a sleek aero dynamic body. The Styrofoam wing can be cut and shaped any-way possible to create a sleek, aero dynamic shape. The balsa wood tail can be cut and shaped anyway possible to create a sleek, aero dynamic shape. Each Design/Build team member will receive per vehicle ( 2 possible designs): 1 fuselage foam body with a CO2 cartridge hole, 1 wing, a set of tail balsa wood. Each Engineering Team will have 14-16 class periods to design, build and test the final solution to the CO2 airplanes.
Research Paper
A. MLA Format B. Double Spaced
As part of the CO2 airplane project you are required to present a research paper with pictures answering the fol-lowing questions and criteria below.
C. 12 point Times New Roman Font D. 5 pages minimum E. Works Cited Page the last page of the written document (before the pictures). Wikipedia is not an acceptable site. F. 3 full pages of text minimum, 2 pages of pictures with captions G. Topics to be discussed: A. History of the development of the airplanes 1. Early designs 2. Modern day fuselage, wings and tail sections 3. Controls on a commercial plane 4. Development of modern safety devices a. Navigational equipment/flying instruments b. Landing gear c. Oxygen emergency masks d. Brakes B. NTSB National Transportation Safety Board i. what are they ii. who are they iii. explain their purpose C. Causes of Airline Accidents i. Mechanical failure ii. Weather conditions iii. Human error D. Explain how aircraft stay in flight. E. Discuss drag and lift F. Discuss three different wing shapes for flight. G. Does weight distribution play an important role in an aircrafts performance explain? H. Discuss future ideas for airplane designs
Test Grade
30 minimum = Pass (A average) Every 5 less that the 30 your grade drops a full grade 25 B; 20 C; 15 D etc. A graduated scale grade for distance will count at 10% of your test grade. Group A 110 A+ Group B 95 A Group C 86 B+ Group D 82 B+ Over 100 is an automatic A+!! *Any group member not working on their project or fooling around when testing will come in the day
