Module Title Design Context 2

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME DANIELLE MUNTYAN

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have
applied them?

I feel this module has been most beneficial and invaluable to me over the course of the academic
year, in terms of my critical thinking and analysis skills, which I have believe have helped also in
other modules, as well as personally, allowing me to re-engage with past personal experiences. By
doing such, I believe that I have delved into a bucket of gold-coated primary research, which
alongside second research (essays, reports, medical studies, case studies, journals and theoretic
reading), have allowed me to become critically aware of information, the media and the idea of
social and cultural hypocrisy which has shaped the module overall. Due to the overwhelming result
of the practical element and the essay, I have decided to take this topic further and propose a more
in-depth and focused study. I feel my passion and drive will and have shown throughout the module.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they
informed your design development process?

Throughout the module, different approaches to design production have been used and developed,
to create pieces of critical and contextual awareness and analysis. Varied methods such as playing
with advertising, and twisting the standard social perception to portray a critical point of view have
been used throughout the practical element, along with photography and in-depth research on body
image perception and the idea of anonymity.

I have engaged with over 100 people throughout primary research that also consisted of an
anonymous survey. The survey allowed me to use my questioning skills in a different manner, whilst
still engaging on a mutual level and maintaining a high level of trust with the respondent. I believe
this is a skill in itself, which without, the module and individual elements would not of worked or
come together in such a positive, critical and engaging format.

In terms of critical, academic writing, I feel my prior English language skills have allowed me to
adapt to triangulation and synthesis, allowing the practical and contextual elements to be engaging,
stimulating and informative.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I feel my strengths vary from time management and organisation, to research skills and ambition.
My drive for the topic chosen I feel was my biggest strength overall, as I was constantly engaged,
seeking more research and seeking constructive feedback when appropriate. I feel my primary
research skills, specifically my first hand experiences of having an eating disorder, allowed me to
have additional sensitivity around the subject, and worked around the idea of an anonymous
confession as a method of relief for the participant whilst being crucial for the research project set
for myself to work.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Without being overly big-headed, I do not think there are any major weaknesses in my work. I feel I
could of included more case studies to add a little additional context to the essay however felt
overall both elements work hand in hand and I am really, really proud of the outcome.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing
these?

1. Keep the original photography idea, whereby bodies are shown, yet hidden under their
comment on a large board. However, many participants felt uneasy about this so this did not
go ahead. Doing this with willing candidates would of made the publication more dramatic in
terms of the correlation between image and text.
2. Add additional bleed to the design to ensure a perfect print.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an x)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor
1 2 3 4 5
Attendance x
Punctuality x
Motivation x
Commitment x
Quantity of work produced x
Quality of work produced x
Contribution to the group x
The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a
percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your
written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions
relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
