Wilner, Andrew. "Insomnia in College Students Is Associated With Poor Mental Health.."Neuropsychiatry
Reviews. 8.8 (2007): 19-19. Web. 23 Mar. 2014.
This source explains the findings of Christie Gardner, a student at the University of North Texas, who has
found a relationship between mental health and insomnia. The 365 students that she studied had good
physical health, but poor mental health. The poor mental health included symptoms of anxiety,
depression, interpersonal sensitivity, obsessive-compulsiveness, phobic anxiety, psychoticism, and
somatization. She concluded that the mental health greatly affects the chances of having insomnia.
This article is very important because it links poor mental health and insomnia together. Stress is
definitely in the category of poor mental health, so this article is very relevant. While relevant, the
article does not go into much detail as to how the study was conducted. It alludes to a questionnaire,
but no questions were listed. I would have also liked to see more information about the subjects like,
What classes are they taking?
This source is credible because it was found through a University data base. This research has also been
peer-reviewed and supported by other research I found. The article also deserves creditability for its
ability to cite previous researches results that related to the study.

Chanin, Louis. N.p.. Web. 23 Mar 2014. <http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/guide/insomnia-
symptoms-and-causes?page=1>.

This source defines insomnia and its subtypes. Through this article we see that there is Primary
insomnia and Secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia means that a persons insomnia is not a result of
some other problem, while Secondary insomnia is. This source also explains that insomnia can be short
term or long term. Short term insomnia (or acute insomnia) is most likely caused by significant life stress
and long term insomnia (or chronic insomnia) is caused by depression.
This article is defines what insomnia is and some of its causes. The article lacks information on the cause
of Primary insomnia, but it makes up for its information through the extensive list of causes of acute and
chronic insomnia. With this information I can identify deferent types of insomnia and whether or not
they are related to stress.
I found this source creditable through its previous reputation with the community. The article has many
facts and no research was conducted. Being written by a prestigious medical cite that brings a main
source of symptoms of health issues, this source can be deemed creditable through its surroundings.

Bernert, Rebecca A., et al. "Family Life Stress And Insomnia Symptoms In A Prospective Evaluation Of
Young Adults." Journal Of Family Psychology 21.1 (2007): 58-66. PsycARTICLES. Web. 23 Mar. 2014.
This source looks at stress within the family and how it affects the lack of sleep or insomnia. The study
took 115 young adults between the ages of 17 22 years old. They were given questions about their
family life and stressors. The survey was given twice, two weeks apart. The article explains that the
young adults who showed a stress in the family had more severe insomnia than those who did not.
With this article I plan to prove that all types of stress can affect your sleep. School related stress is no
longer the main cause of insomnia. The research proves that any type of stress can evolve into insomnia.
This seals my argument that there is a direct correlation between stress and insomnia. The next step is
to find things to counter the stress, which this source lacks. This source does bring much statistics to
back up the resultant.
I find this source credible through many means. There are five authors of this article and all are part of
Florida State University. This article has also been a part of the scientific community for 7 years now and
the fact that is has not been taking down is a reassurance that it is credible. Finally this article is being
stored in a UNCC data base, so the university finds this source creditable.

"Explore Insomnia." Department of Health and Human Services . n. page. Print.
This source goes into detail on the medication used to treat insomnia. These medicines sometimes have
sleep related side effects like sleep walking. The article also touches upon some of the hereditary traits
involved with primary insomnia. For example, if your parents struggled with insomnia it is likely that
your insomnia was inherited. Insomnia can be treated by avoiding stimulant drugs like caffeine and
tobacco. Finally the source suggests to create a sleep schedule and to not eat heavy meals before bed.
This source helps in my overall research by addressing some of the drugs and biological factors that play
into sleep and insomnia. There are many methods to treatment in this article and it will no doubt make
it into my overall findings paper and presentation.
This source is creditable because its a government article and website. Normal US citizens cannot create
a .gov website, so seeing that makes it creditable. All the information seems to be accurate based on all
the other research I have done.

Mayo Clinic Staff . "Stress management." Chronic stress puts your health at risk. (2013): n. page. Print.
This source addresses the effects of stress on your mental health and physical health. The article takes
an evolutionary standpoint and states that stress is our natural response to increase activity. Being
stressed takes a lot of resources from the body and if stress is long term we can start see systems shut
down and other problems start to arise. Long term stress can cause anxiety, depression, digestive
problems, heart disease, sleep problems, weight gain and memory.
This article helps me explain how important it is not to be stressed. The heart disease especially, can
threaten your life. From previous knowledge I know that heart disease is the number one killer in the
USA. This will hopefully get my readers attention and bring light to how important it is to manage stress.
This source also reinforces my subject by saying that stress can cause sleep problems.
The Mayo Clinic published this article and they are also responsible for many other publications. I find
this source valid because there is no other information that goes against the claims made in the article.
The more information I find, the more confident I am in judging other sources, so I am fairly certain I can
trust this.
