A Study On Halal Food Awareness Among Muslim Customers In Klang Valley

This study will recognize halal food awareness among Muslim customers in Klang
Valley, Malaysia. Basically, Muslims always link with Islam, then directly link to Halalan and
Toyyiban especially in halal food consume because it is already stated in the Holy Quran and
(Sunnah). In order to consume halal food, Muslim will rely on halal logo to identify availability.
At Malaysia, Halal food awareness is important whereas Muslims make their food
choices by identifying halal logo and certification and lead to the advantages in market because
60.4% of Malaysian are Muslims. In addition, price is a crucial point.
Futhermore, a healthy, nutritious, wholesome food, variety of food offered in market start
from process, packaging, tasting and aesthetically pleasing, plus with food safety and food
hygiene with the application of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) influenced for the food consumption. But, for Muslim
customers, food chain must be safe as well as halal to ensure the food quality. To ensure the
safety and hygience, Malaysian government has launched Malaysian Standard MS 1500 for
halal guidelines, and it is also implemented together with related standards MS 1480 and MS
1514 food safety, quality and hygiene because food consumptions are depending on various
factors especially for muslim.
To make Malaysia as a global halal hub for halal products and services, several
programs and policies have been planned such as government involved actively in promoting
Malaysian halal logo and certification at international arena, special agencies for crafting,
formulating and implementing halal focus for Malaysia, various agencies have to cooperate and
working together in order to strengthen government effort. So, to understand halal in Malaysia,
halal value chain was used as a guideline to enlighten people about agencies and government
departments that are directly involved in realizing government objective including many various
stakeholders that involve are helping the government to realize the vision.
However, based on this study, result show several findings in relating to the issue of
halal awareness among Muslim customers in shopping at Klang Valley for food were not
concerned for halal. Hence, something need to be done to improve halal awareness among
Muslim customers. First of all, halal concept must be fully understood by all Muslims, then
government agency specifically JAKIM must make some effortt relating to the halal.
At the same time, majority Muslims customers only relying on halal logo and JAKIM
must provide the standardization of halal label or logo to gain confidence among customers.

Conceptual Framework on Halal Food Supply Chain Integrity Enhancement.

Nowadays, halal food products is a components of the Halal industry and it is a religious
requirements for the Muslim, but non-Muslims also started to demand for this due to the
perception that Halal foods are much more clean, hygiene and tasty. However, Halal status
keep on playing in mind of the Halal food consumers especially Muslim because most of these
Halal food products are produced by non-Muslims countries and involved a lot of travel and
stage. This is a reason why comprehensive and well managed supply chain management
approach need to be applied which by process of managing food products from different points
of suppliers to different points of buyer/consumers, involving various different parties, at
different places, for the purpose to satisfying customers and ensure that the Halal status of the
food product remains intact throughout the whole process. In simple word, it started from the
raw material until deliver it to consumer. Without proper understanding of Halal integrity, it is
difficult to apply because each chain is related each others.
So, to investigate factors to improve the integrity of the Halal food supply chain, it have
many factors to consider. Firstly, overview of Halal integrity itself. In this case, all parties that
involved in the Halal food supply chain should bear the responsibilities to carry out the quality of
their product. Supported by the previous study, full participation of all parties in the Halal supply
chain is required in order to achieve the supply chain integrity whereas not only have identified
the parties involved directly in the transaction such as the Halal food producers, its suppliers,
employees, and customers but also those indirectly involved such trade associations, NGO and
government bodies.
Secondly, factors enhancing Halal food supply chain integrity like a Halal certification,
Halal standard, Halal traceability, Halal dedicated assets, trust among supply chain members,
commitment of supply chain members and the role of government. For the Halal certificate, that
mean a sense of confidence and trust that comply with Sharia Law like a Halal logo or
certificate of compliance. To avoid fraud, logo or certificates must be authorized by a trustworthy
Islamic organization.
Next, Halal standards. Based on the nowadays situation, it is difficult to apply Halal
standard global regulation that can be practiced worldwide because each have their own
standards. In this situation, Halal certification must not be too strict in the process of
implementation.
Meanwhile, e, traceability can be used to trace the Halal status at every stage of the
supply chain including all the information regarding the activities that the Halal food products
have went through. Critical Halal control points also can be fully monitored , identified and
further action can be taken. For example, we can used g technology such as Radio Frequency
Identification Device (RFID), barcode and Internet for this trace.
To improved supply Chain Integrity, Halal with the non Halal products must prevented
from mixing under Halal dedicated assets . For example, the usage of third party logistics (3PL)
to ensure that Halal food products are deliver in a dedicated way and how human workforce
handles the Halal food supply chain on the day to day basis.
Other than that, trust play a huge role based on the Halal logo or Halal certification to
give information for consumers about products according to the Halal guideline and Sharia. But,
have a cases that people used fake Halal logo in their operation and this situation make
consumer feel skeptical.
Related with trust is commitment because once consumer trust, their commitment also
rise. Hence, in Halal food supply chain, dedicated way to show commitment are cater the Halal
clients requests, willingness to apply Halal certification, and send workers to Halal food
handling.
Government roles in ensuring Halal food supply chain integrity also important because
can cover many aspects that relate to halal like a certification, auditing and guidelines. For
example, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), a governing body from the
support of multiple government agencies, is responsible for halal certification matters and have
established Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) to promote and develop the Halal
industry. It have a benefit to coordinate and facilitate the Halal activities between the
government, businesses and the consumers, and to ensure the integrity of the Halal industry as
well.
For conclusion, Halal integrity is the foundation of the Halal food industry and including
all handling activities within the supply chain. Besides that, factors such as Halal certification,
Halal standard, Halal traceability, Halal dedicated assets, trust and commitments between
supply chain members must be given serious attention to ensure the needs of the Halal food
consumers can be satisfied and well protected.

Quality Assurance Development of Halal Food Products for Export to Indonesia.
The most populous Muslim country in the world is Indonesia, but the concerns of Halal
foods just appeared in 1989. Since that, awareness and demand for Halal products of Muslim
people become increase plus with the the Halal assurance system (HAS), those companies to
provide basic prerequisite for application of getting Halal certificate. According to Halal foods, it
is a foods which are lawful according to Islamic law whereas food are lawfully acquired, Halal in
terms of types or categories of things, and focuses on processing that relate with safety,
hygience and healthy.
For the Halal market in Indonesia, it represents US $78.5 billion, a high trend, the third
from 6 areas of global Halal food market and also the biggest in Asian Countries. Related with
that, Head of National Agency of Food and Drug Control (BPOM) have released and at the end
of 2003, head of BPOM published guidelines food labeling for food labeling and advertising
require that the nutrition content information. Under the Food Act of 1996, many issues related
with packaging are included meanwhile registration process should be conducted by a local
agent or importer and it takes longer than usual.
In the another aspects, Halal food certification is beneficial because concerned with the
both the food hygiene and the safe food. But, to apply for Halal certificate, company need to
completed some of the fulfillment and phase. To ensure the continuously and consistently of
Halal production, company that holding Halal certificate used Halal Assurance System (HAS).
Next, safe and hygienic food. To ensure the quality of both aspects, Good
Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Hygiene Practice (GHP) have a function to ensure the
consistently manufactured of product meanwhile Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene
and the Malaysian Standard MS 1514 on General Principles of Food Hygiene is a firm
foundation in hygienic practices in ensuring food hygiene. Furthermore, implementing HACCP
and Halal Systems is a proper steps for Halal food industries to ensures that the product is safe
and can be consumed by anyone including non-Muslims .For the aspect safety , it will cover
many aspects sanitation, food additives, genetic engineering and irradiation, food packaging,
quality assurance and laboratory testing and contaminated food.
So, we can conclude that Indonesia also has a big potential to take part in the Halal food
competition in the global market based on the Indonesia is the greatest Muslim population in the
world, first-third of highest value for Halal Products import and demand for Halal food. But, all of
this must supported by the Halal certification system to ensure products are also clean, safe
and well taken care of with good presentation and served in a proper manner.

Using RFID Technology in Food Produce Traceability.
RFID is a common tools that are used in many country such as America, Taiwan, and
England not only in food operation but also in business and medical field. In this study, it will
combine RFID technology and chicken food traceability system to many benefits.
In food traceability system, it will record all information started from growing, breeding,
processing, transporting until selling. Hence, this system can help consumer purchasing safety
food and track food safety causing more easily. Besides that, producer and consumer trace or
track food producing information. Basically, this system started from America to give a focus into
the safety and fresh food, meanwhile at Japan more focus to the safety and quality.
In simple explanation, it started from the production whereas it will record the
information, have their own trace number, and upload to TAFT System by self or by farmer
association. However, It do not record processing stage and logistic and selling stage. The
example of food that used this system are potato, rice, Chinese yam, grape, strawberry, and
tea.
Based on result, combine RFID chicken food traceability system is more good in result
compare than the actual food traceability system which by cover the entire supply chain,
handhold device and combine machine, easier, faster to get trace and track information
and high identifying.
So, we can conclude that food traceability system is useful because can trace food and
information. Once we combine RFID food traceability system, it can help to trace problem of
food and let consumer get food complete information and guarantee of safety.

At Kazakhstan, 838.7 thousand ton in meat production ( deadweight) at 20107 and
increase to 934.1 at 2012 whereas mean 16% growth. At here, stability of meat products
quality is important for meat products businesses because if consumer feel something differ,
they will attend to choose another product. At the same time, media also can give affect to the
sale.
Based on the volume of meat products non-conforming to sanitary and chemical
requirements in 2009-2011, it showed the decreasing pattern and indicator that the quality is
increase. Similar with the volume of meat products non-conforming to microbiological
requirements,
Based on Committee of Technical Regulation and Metrology of Kazakhstan, the number
of meat production/processing businesses deployed ISO-based food products safety
management system, major in HACCP is 82 but have more than 4,000 business in this industry.
HACCP system have a benefit in a aspect of safety but have a high cost for the equipments
expenses.
Besides that, Belgium Muslims trust halal markings because they are sure that this
market is being regulated meanwhile growth of Muslim population at Europe gives development
standard of halal foods. Refer to the beef production forecast in Kazakhstan in 2010-2014, it

A REVIEW OF HALAL FOOD WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO MEAT AND ITS
TRADE POTENTIAL.
Definition of halal can be define as s a term designating for any object or an action which
is permissible to use or engage in, according to Quran and Sunnah. In the aspect of halal, meat
consumption will used religion whether allow or prevent the used of certain types of meat by a
group of people especially Islam and Jew. Refer to the slaughtering of food animals by Muslim,
it has been criticized by non-Muslims. But, the truth is it care about the welfare of animals
whereas sharp knife while slaughtering have been proved to be painless, let the blood flow out
of the body enhancing the quality of meat and remove microorganisms in body tissues.
For the types of meat animal, it can refer to types and habitats, land or marine. But
different sect have difference opinion. For example, Malakiyyah group, all sea-foods are halal.
Hambaliyyah said , all marine animals are halal except frog, crocodile and snake and
Hanafiyyah said only fish is halal.
In the aspects of halal meat trade, have a problem like a lack of information about Halal
food and difficulty to trust companies that claim to provide halal because difficult to test the
validity of theirs claim. But, international halal food still increase in their market. This is because
halal are important components of the food business. For example, many halal markets and
ethnic stores have increase especially in the major metropolitan areas, most of the 6 to 8 million
Muslims in North America observe halal laws, and particularly the avoidance of pork. This is a
opportunities on a worldwide basis at the food industry moves to a more global business.
At Thailand, they relies heavily on exports and also support economy through Halal food
exports whereas have its share in the global halal food market even just one percent,
establishment of the Halal Science Center at the Chulalongkorn Universities, and involved
Muslim Pathan in butchering and dairy farmers.
At Malaysia, many steps was taken to position the country as an international center for
halal food for the global market like a promote Malaysia as a regional distribution and
warehousing hub. At the same time, Muslims in Malaysia are looking for Halal meat through
certification; halal logo/slogan which be issued by the Department of Malaysia Islamic
Development (JAKIM).
At Pakistan, this country has been ranked 2nd in buffalo milk production and 3rd in
global milk production. In order to change the practice and enhance the meat production by
collaborating directly with the farmers,Save The Calf was created, it will started by company.
So, The Lahore Meat Processing Complex; countrys biggest plant is envisioned that all meat
consumed locally in the country be processed through plants complied with the international
standards of hygiene and Halal.
Here, we can see the potential of Halal meat is wide in global market and this
opportunity can be grab by any company to provide a halal meat that can be consume not only
for Muslim but also for Non Muslim in term halal meat product is completed with halal, safety
and hygiene factors.
