:Introduction
Superman! Altitude! Speed! Float! Eagle! Sky! What is the first thing that
comes to your mind when you look at these words? If you me my answer
would be FLYING! Why? Because flying is my passion. And that’s the
reason why I chose flying as the topic for my presentation. The
.presentation will be divided in three parts i.e
.wings
Poland, 1866 Polish peasent Jan Wneck flew using first hand •
.controllable glider
.sustained flight
United Kingdom 1919, British Air Force made the first lighter than•
.air aircraft
.commercial carrier
.commercial flight
:The Spark
Four to five years ago I was not even remotely interested in flying. This
was largely because I never had exposure to this field and partly because
flying made me sick. But the change came when I watched this classic
Hollywood movie Top Gun. Screened in 1986 the movie starred Tom
Cruise and was based on the career of a fighter pilot in the United States
Air Force. With the glamorized image that was presented in the movie I
am sure everyone who watched it would have thought of becoming a
fighter pilot. I was surely moved. The flips and turns of F-14 Tom Cat kept
me at the edge of my seat and thinking. Then there was Tom Cruise's
sports bike and hot girlfriend, the combo forced me to seriously consider
flying as a career. Top Gun was therefore, the first that started the love
.for flying
This spark fully ignited when I watched a play about Pakistan's fighter
pilot Rashid Minhas. This play was aired on Defense day. It made me
realize that flying is not about the sense of freedom or speed or glamour it
is also about being a greater human being. The story of this hero and his
.sacrifice cemented my love for flying
:Favorite Aircrafts
Now when the love of flight had developed I got interested in the
machines that we human beings use for flying. As I dug deeper in aviation
.I developed some favorites. Following are my favorite aircrafts
Cessna 172.1
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high-wing•
fixed-wing aircraft. First flown in 1955 and still in production, more
.Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft
Measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 is the•
most successful mass produced light aircraft in history. The first
production models were delivered in 1956 and they are still in
production. As of 2008, more than 43,000 had been built.[1] The
Skyhawk's main competitors have been the Beechcraft Musketeer
and Grumman AA-5 series (neither in production), the Piper
Cherokee and, more recently, the Diamond DA40
.PAF has four Cessna 172s•
F-14 Tomcat.1
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat,•
variable-sweep wing aircraft. The F-14 was the United States Navy's
primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor
and tactical reconnaissance platform from 1974 to 2006. It later
performed precision strike missions once it was integrated with the
Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night LANTIRN
system.[1] The F-14 was developed after the collapse of the F-111B
project, and was the first of the American teen-series fighters which
were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against
.MiGs during the Vietnam War
The F-14 first deployed in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS•
Enterprise, replacing the F-4 Phantom II and was retired from the
active U.S. Navy fleet on 22 September 2006, having been replaced
by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.[2] As of 2009, the F-14 is in service
with only the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, being exported to
the former Imperial Iranian Air Force in 1976, during a time when
.the US had good diplomatic relations with Iran
.It was the main aircraft featured in Top Gun•
Retired from service in 2006. The remaining intact US Navy F-14•
aircraft have been stored at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and
Regeneration Group "Boneyard", at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base,
Arizona. As of July 2007, many of the remaining 165 aircraft were
being shredded to prevent parts from being acquired by Iran, the
only other nation to buy the F-14. By July 2007, 23 F-14s had been
shredded at a cost of $900,000. Due to the strength of the landing
gear, it was removed before shredding and cut up with a torch. The
last remaining F-14 after demolition will be located at Naval Air
].Station Pensacola, Florida
F-22 Raptor.1
The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation fighter•
aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed primarily as an
air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include
ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is
responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and
final assembly of the F-22. Program partner Boeing Integrated
Defense Systems provides the wings, aft fuselage, avionics
integration, and all of the pilot and maintenance training systems
The first production F-22 was delivered to Nellis Air Force Base,•
Nevada, on 14 January 2003 and "Dedicated Initial Operational Test
and Evaluation" commenced on 27 October 2003. By 2004, 51
.Raptors had been delivered
In August 2007, the United States Air Force signed a $5 billion,•
multi-year contract with Lockheed Martin that will extend production
to 2011,[17] and as of 2008, F-22 Raptors are being procured at the
rate of 20 per year
No opportunity for export currently exists because the export sale of•
.the F-22 is barred by American federal law
