Field of Flowers Socks

Designed by Emm1e, sockapalooza4pal@gmail.com

My patience with winter always runs out in mid February and March and I can’t wait for spring.
I like to garden and it is just too early where I live. So here are socks that are a mixture of the
“Field of Flowers” lace pattern and seed stitch so at least I can feel like I’m “growing”
something bright and pretty.

Repeat Seeds and Flowers pattern 5 times. Then work a heel setup row as follows n1: p2, k35,
n2: p5 k31.

Now we have to rearrange the stitches a little bit before working the heel. K2 stitches from the
beginning of n1 to n2. Then slip 3 stitches from the beginning of n2 to n1. You will end up with
37 stitches on n1 and 35 on n2.

Heel flap (this is an eye of partridge heel with a garter edge for you pros):
Row 1: p3 (sl1 k1) repeat across until the last 3 stitches, k3
Row 2: k3, purl to end of row
Row 3: p3 (k1 sl1) repeat across until the last 3 stitches, k3
Row 4: k3, purl to end of row
Repeat rows 1-4 until you have worked 36 rows. This means that you have 18 purl ridges on
each side of the heel flap.

Heel Turn:
Row 1: Knit 20, ssk, k1, turn
Row 2: Sl 1, purl 4, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 3: Sl 1, knit to within 1 of gap, ssk, k1, turn
Row 4: Sl 1, purl to within 1 of gap, p2tog, p1, turn
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all stitches are worked. You will have 21 sts. Knit 1 row even on n1.
Gusset Decrease:
Pick up 1 stitch in each purl bump (do it by catching a thread from the bump itself instead of the
stitch in between the bumps for a neater look). So far you have 18 new stitches on the needle.
Pick up another stitch or two at the end of the row to prevent holes. Knit across n2 using row 2
of Field of Flowers for foot pattern.

Continuing on n1, pick up a stitch or two at the beginning of this row to prevent holes. Now pick
up 1 stitch in each purl bump. You will have 19 or 20 new stitches, depending on whether you
picked up 1 or 2 at the beginning of the row. Knit the rest of the stitches on n1, and n2 in
pattern.

Row 1: N1: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches on the needle, k2tog, k1
N2: Knit in Field of Flowers for foot pattern starting with row 3 on the first repeat
Row 2: N1: Knit, N2: Knit in pattern
Continue with rows 1 and 2 until 35 stitches remain on n1.

Foot:
N1: Knit every row
N2: Work in pattern stitch
Continue until sock is about 1.5 inches less than desired length. You must finish on either 6 or
row 12 for this to look right. If you need to end in the middle of a pattern repeat work a few
rounds of stockinette on n1 and p2, k31, p2 on n2 to get to 1.5 inches less than the desired length

Toe:
Row 1: (both needles) k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 2: (both needles) knit all stitches
Continue with rows 1 and 2 until there are 23 stitches left on each needle. Then work row 1 only
until there are 11 stitches left on each needle. Use kitchner stitch and your tapestry needle to
close up the toe. Now work in the ends and try it on and start that second sock.
