Stand-Alone Lab: Saving Router Congurations

Objective
Learn to copy the running conguration to the startup conguration. Congure Router1 with the appropriate
settings.
Lab Topology
The topology in this lab contains three 2800 series Cisco routers.

Command Summary
Command Description
congure terminal enters global conguration mode from privileged EXEC mode
copy running-cong startup-cong saves the conguration le
enable enters privileged EXEC mode
end ends and exits conguration mode
erase startup-cong deletes the startup conguration le in non-volatile random
access memory (NVRAM)
exit exits one level in the menu structure
hostname host-name sets the device name
reload reboots the router
show running-cong displays the active conguration le
show startup-cong displays the backup conguration le
Lab Tasks
Task 1: Load the Initial Network Conguration
Make sure that the correct topology and conguration les for this lab are loaded. This will occur automatically
when you load this lab by using the Lab Navigator.
Lab ID: 8.8K312A033.SAI1.1

Task 2: Learn the Copy Command
1. From user EXEC mode, issue the enable command to enter privileged EXEC mode. Then congure a host
name of Router1 for the router.
6SYXIV"IREFPI
6SYXIVGSRJMKYVI XIVQMREP
Router(config)=hostname RouterI
RouterI(config)=end
2. Issue the show running-cong command to display the active conguration in memory. The active
conguration running on the router is referred to as the running-cong in the routers command-line
interface (CLI). Note that privileged EXEC mode is required to display the active conguration. The running
conguration script is not automatically saved on a Cisco router and will be lost in the event of power
failure. The running conguration must be manually saved with the copy command.

3. Issue the show startup-cong command to display the conguration stored in NVRAM. You have not
saved the conguration, so none can be displayed. Therefore, you should see a 2SRZSPEXMPI
GSRJMKYVEXMSR QIQSV] MW RSX TVIWIRX message.
RouterI=show startup-config

4. Issue the copy running-cong startup-cong to copy the current active conguration to NVRAM. The
current active conguration is in random access memory (RAM); it should be saved so that the router will
still boot up with the saved conguration in the event of a power outage.

6. If you decide that you would like to start conguring the router from scratch, you can erase the startup
conguration and reload the router. This will enable you to completely delete all congurations on the
router. Issue the erase startup-cong command to delete the conguration le in NVRAM. When
prompted, conrm that you want to erase the NVRAM le system by pressing the Y key.

7. Issue the reload command to reload the router, and press Y when prompted to conrm the reload.
When prompted to enter the initial conguration dialog, press N. The initial conguration dialog prompt is
displayed because a startup conguration was not found. The following is sample output from the reload
command:

8. After the router reboots, look at the startup conguration le again. Because you did not save it before
you reloaded, there is nothing there. Therefore, you should see a 2SRZSPEXMPI GSRJMKYVEXMSR

13. After the router reloads, the host name Router1, not Boson, is displayed at the prompt because the
conguration used to start the router was the startup conguration. Issue the show startup-cong
