Fancy Title

The journey that everyone must take, the one that can be delayed but not
forgotten, is the journey unto self. It is a task that everyone must takeno matter
how terrifying or dangerous. If not, how can you possible know you place in the
world? How can you know the world without even knowing yourself? In Joseph
Conrads story of European imperialism, he demonstrates

The introduction of the characters is done in great detail. gives not the name
of the characters, but what they represent. He calls them the Lawyer, the
Accountant, the Director. He almost seems to say that their names are not
important; there have been thousands like them to journey to the unknown. Instead
of telling us about their personality, Conrad gives a description of their action. In
their actions these characters are expressed. The Lawyer had the only cushion on
deck, so he was probably a man of high importance. The Accountant was toying
architecturally with the bone, and the Director was standing before them all, in a
position of leadership. Because theses characters are described in such a way, it
makes the reader think that they are a symbol of an empirical state of mind. The
only one to be given background is Marlow, immediately singling him out as
different.
A picture can hold great significance and emotion. Conrad skillfully paints the
reader a picture of setting. He is able to place the reader into his own mind using
colorful and detailed language. In the opening page, most of it is spent simply
describing the atmosphere. The Sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like
the beginning of an interminable waterway. This quote tells of excitement,
adventure, and pure admiration of the sea. The reader is not only able to ascertain
that the characters are travelling abroad a boat, but they can also infer a type of
emotion that the characters may feel. Conrad uses his description of the setting to
give the reader an incite into the personality and qualities of his characters. The air
was dark above Gravesendand still seemed condensed into a mournful
gloomover the biggest, and the greatest town on earth. You can infer from this
description that the sailors have reached the end of a long journey and are filled
with anticipation for what may lie ahead. Conrads ability to tell the reader of
emotion through words is incredible.
