Homework Response 1 Get Your S*** Together

My first reaction to the email exchange was, wow, and complete amazement. There are
many times during my career that I have felt slighted by a teachers condescending
attitude, but this was shocking. Mr. Galloways response was the most alarming, as it was
teeming with sarcasm and mockery. Like these statements, For the record, we also have
no stated policy against bursting into show tunes in the middle of class, urinating on
desks or taking that revolutionary hair removal system for a spin, and the infamous, get
your s*** together.
A professor plays a very complicated role in society. They are expected to teach the
children of the world all the necessary information that will help them succeed in life yet
somehow not take on the responsibility of parenting or reprimanding behaviors that they
believe to be inappropriate. Its a balancing act that is hard to master. When a teacher is
put in a defensive position there is an understood code of conduct amongst teachers, as
well as students, which should be followed. This includes the circumstances when the
student does not show the due respect that is expected. Mr. Galloway mentions a
baseline level of decorum yet completely disregards it himself. Which is more wrong: a
young, growing student to not show, or have been taught, proper modesty or a grown
professional? Especially a professor who is being paid, unlike an employer whose
haughty behavior might be understandable.
If a student has an issue that he feels he needs to express then he has a right to freely
express it. A lack of tact can be occasionally expected from the immature mind of an
undergraduate student and should be handled professionally by the teacher. Even on a
graduate level bases a professor should always remain professional and address the
matter as a teacher not a parent.
After reading this altercation, I am not fond of either persons behavior towards one
another. I would not be interested in taking this teachers class because it is apparent that
he is lacking the skills necessary for a positive learning experience such as a good
disposition, modesty, and forbearance. I would prefer a teacher who would, instead of
talk down to, simply talk to me as equals.
After reading the students response, I would not want to work in a group with this
person because he sounds selfish and ignorant to his own faults. He ignored the fact that
he was disruptive and disrespectful to the teachers rules and no excuse can remedy his
indolence. If he were less egocentric and more understanding of the position he put Mr.
Galloway in, he would know that the email he sent was utterly unnecessary.
