Positioning Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya as a Tourist destination
Introduction
Tourism has been a major social phenomenon of the societies all along. It is widely acknowledged that
tourism is one of the worlds largest and fastest-growing industries. India a country with tremendous
diversity has a lot to offer in terms of tourism and related activities. In other words heritage site, cultural
attractions, beaches, health & wellness like yoga & ayurvedic, Indian cuisine provides for huge potential
for the tourism sector in India. s the Travel and Tourism industry holds tremendous potential for India!s
economy it is included among the "ore #ectors of the Indian $conomy.
North-East India
%efore Independence this entire area was known as ssam &rovince. Time to time seven different states
have been separated from the same area.
These are runachal &radesh, 'egahalaya, Tripura, (agaland, 'i)oram, ssam, and 'anipur.
The region is also known as the land of seven sisters and recently eighth state #ikkim was added into this.
The (orth eastern state is very different in many ways from the other part of India. These #tates have the
ma*imum number of Tribes living within. 'any tribal languages are spoken throughout these eight states.
The northeastern states have the highest percentage of "hristians. Territory wise this region is the most
sensitive region touching many countries like "hina, Tibet, %hutan, 'yanmar & %angladesh. &ermits to
visit the states of ssam, 'eghalaya & Tripura are no longer re+uired. &ermits to other states are to be
obtained from the local office. The states are famous for their scenic beauty. The states also have many
other tourists attractions like ,a)iranga wild life sanctuary where one can see one horned -hinoceros and
the famous Tawang .ompa-most important .ompa in (orth.
The region is known for its uni+ue culture, handicrafts, martial arts, and scenic beauty. &roblems include
insurgency, unemployment, drug addiction, and lack of infrastructure. #ince the beginning of the
economic liberali)ation in the /001s, studies have shown that this region is lagging behind the others in
terms of development.
Arunachal Pradesh Special Features
runachal &radesh attracts tourists from many parts of the world. Tourist attractions include Tawang, a
beautiful town famous for its %uddhist monastery, 2iro, famous for cultural festivals, the (amdapha tiger
project in "hanglang district and #ela lake near %omdila with its bamboo bridges overhanging the river.
-eligious places of interest include 'alinithan in 3ekhabali, -ukhmininagar near -oing 4the place where
-ukmini, 3ord ,rishna!s wife in 5indu mythology, is said to have lived6, and &arshuram ,und in 3ohit
district 4which is believed to be the lake where &arshuram washed away his sins6. -afting and trekking
are common activities. visitor!s permit from the tourism department is re+uired. &laces like Tuting have
wonderful, undiscovered scenic beauty.
Festivals
runachal &radesh is home to at least 78 major and sub 9 tribes, each with its distinct tradition and
customs. The majority of the population, that consists of tribes like di, .alo, ka, patani, (yishi,
Tagins, %ori, %okar etc. still continue with their ancient beliefs and indigenous practices of worshipping
the sun and the moon . This religion is known as :onyi- &olo 4which literally means sun and 'oon6.
Wildlife
The variation in altitude and climatic conditions account for four different types of forests whose natural
shelter and food harbour a range of flora and fauna, some of which are found only in runachal &radesh.
It is the only state that can claim to have four major varieties of the big cats in its jungles- tiger, leopard,
clouded leopard and snow leopard.'ore than ;11 species of birds have been recorded, many of which are
highly endangered and restricted to this state. $ach district of runachal &radesh has its own e*clusive
and rare variety of orchids. <ne of sias largest <rchidarium is in runachal &radesh, located at Tipi.
Flora and Fauna
runachal &radesh is considered to be the =nature!s treasure trove= and home to orchids, known for their
e*+uisitely beautiful blooms, from one of the dominant ta*a with more than si* hundred species,
occurring in varying elevations and climatic conditions throughout the state.
The state has a wonderful world of orchids that have adorned the forests making the state an =<rchid
&aradise= of our country.

'eghalaya has some of the thickest surviving forests in the country and therefore constitutes one of the
most important ecotourism circuits in the country today. The 'eghalayan subtropical forests support a
vast variety of flora and fauna. 'eghalaya has 7 (ational &arks and ? Bildlife #anctuaries.
'eghalaya also offers many adventure tourism opportunities in the form of mountaineering, rock
climbing, trekking and hiking, water sports etc. The state offers several trekking routes some of which
also afford and opportunity to encounter some rare animals such as the slow loris, assorted deer and bear.
'eghalaya has an estimated ;11 natural limestone and sandstone caves spread over the entire state
including most of the longest and deepest caves in the sub-continent. ,rem 3iat &rah is the longest cave

"herrapunjee is one of the most popular tourist spots in (orth $ast of India. It lies to the south of the
capital #hillong. The town is very well known and needs little publicity. rather scenic, ;1 kilometer
long road, connects "herrapunjee with #hillong.
'eghalaya also has many natural and manmade lakes. The Dmiam 3ake 4popularly known as %ara &ani
meaning %ig water6 on the .uwahati-#hillong road is a major tourism attraction for tourist. 'eghalaya
has several parksE Thangkharang &ark, the $co-park, the %otanical .arden and 3ady 5ydari &ark to name
a few. :awki, which is located at about 08 ,ilometres from #hillong is the gateway to %angladesh and
affords a scenic view of some of the tallest mountain ranges in 'eghalaya and the %angladesh border
lands.
