Organize your home so you feel fresh as a daisy

Nancy Black
Since January, many magazines have had articles on spring cleaning and decluttering your home. Cleaning is not my strength, but organizing is my passion. It is my pleasure to share some practical organizing tips with you. Hopefully you will be reading this on a beautiful spring day. Now is the time to organize your home so you will feel fresh as a daisy. The six areas of organizing challenges that I am going to focus on are: Garden supplies Garage Entryway Kitchen Clothes closets/drawers products Garden supplies The ideal is to have a potting shed, with a potting bench and a freestanding garden station. The next best thing is to have these items in your garage or walk-out basement. More practical gardening items are a garden tool belt, a tool tote and a tool stool. These save you time because you dont have to start searching for, or gathering, your tools when you want to work in your garden. Garage Organize the things in your garage by category. For instance, a specic area for each type of sports equipment, car maintenance, gardening, pool or cookout supplies. Small items should be stored in stackable seethrough containers that are clearly labeled. Tip for bicycle helmets

store on the handlebars. Entryway There are products designed for organizing entryways that include hooks, which are perfect for hanging items such as coats, dog leashes or umbrellas, and drawers, which allow for easy storage of small items such as sunglasses or keys. This is ideal for a small entryway. Hooks for jackets and cubbies for shoes work well because they are a visual reminder of where to put things away. Kitchen The most important areas to organize in a kitchen are cabinets, the pantry and countertops. The rst step is to look at each of these areas and decide what you want to keep. Once youve eliminated the things you do not want, you can see what you need to organize. Stacking shelves maximize cabinet space. Stackable bins, or

open clear plastic storage boxes are ideal for small packages of things in your pantry. If school papers, yers and unimportant mail create clutter on your countertops, you need a mail-processing system. In addition to clearing the clutter, you will have what you need at your ngertips. Clothes closets/drawers As one season segues into another, it is the opportune time for you to clear the clutter out of your clothes closets and drawers. Most people wear 20 percent of their clothes 80 percent of the time. Have boxes or bags labeled give away, donate and throw away. Distribute them ASAP so you get them out of the house. Many charitable organizations will pick up items at your doorstep. Contact me for a list of resources in your area.

When organizing childrens clothes to save for a sibling or to give away, put in containers that are marked by size and season. The biggest mistake people make storing clothes is using the largest plastic bins they can nd. Smaller stackable bins (clearly labeled) are easier to handle and more conducive to storing in the top of the closet, or in the attic or basement on shelves. Use quilted boot shapers when you store your fashion boots. Drawer organizers provide spaces for socks, underwear and small items so the items stay separated. Organizing products Many people spend hundreds of dollars on organizing products that are the wrong size and shape for their needs. They make multiple trips to purchase and return them, or worse yet, the items stay in a bag and get relegated to the

someday, Ill return these pile. The most important thing you can do to avoid this is to measure the interior of the space where you want them to go and measure what you want to go into them.

She specializes in the 3 Hour Transformation and The A.R.T. of Planning Your Time. This hidden gem is a boaters paradise. A sunny, modern home with soaring ceilings and water views, 20 Fosters Point in Beverly boasts a 320-foot pier so you can dock your boat right outside your back door. With vaulted ceilings, tons of natural light and views of the sea on all sides, a home like this is a perfect family gathering spot summer or winter. And with easy access to Route 128, ve commuter rail stations and Beverlys plentitude of restaurants and shops, every weekend will feel like a getaway. As Fay Salt of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage said, Youll never want to vacation anywhere else but home. Originally a summer cottage, the home underwent a masterful renovation in 1997. The owners kept the casual character of the original structure in the living areas with rough-hewn pine paneling and many picture windows, while building up and out to take full advantage of sun, sea and sky. The end result is open and airy, with the sensation of being on a ship, Salt said. The front of this sunny home faces Danvers River, and a covered wraparound porch offers expansive water views. The open floor plan offers privacy and relaxation in each of its three bedrooms, three full baths, fireplaced living room and a sunroom facing the river. A den could be used as a home ofce or an additional bedroom. The bright, sunny kitchen is fully updated with vaulted ceilings, skylights, stainlesssteel appliances and tile ooring. Kids art adds personal touch

Interior designers and others encourage parents to nd a way to create a rotating gallery in their home for childrens art.

Its a conundrum many parents face: what to do with the steady ow of drawings, paintings, collages and more that children bring home from school and camp? Which are the keepers and besides sticking them up on the refrigerator with magnets how can you display them creatively? They caught me throwing some away, and they were not happy about it, Mandy Rose of Carterville, Ill., said of her three children. Rose, who loves to decorate her house and writes about it at houseofroseblog.com, decided to combine some of her kids work with professional pieces and family photos in a montage on her dining room wall. She even commissioned one of the kids to create a nger painting for an eye-catching frame she had bought. People always ask, Did your kids make that? she said. Its a real conversation starter.

Cabinet-style frames open from the front to allow parents to slip in artwork without taking the frame off the wall.

Mandy Rose incorporated her childrens artwork on a gallery wall in the dining room of her home. The framed nger painting is a real conversation starter, she said.

Childrens art absolutely has a place in home dcor and can add a welcome personal touch, said Esther Sadowsky, owner of Charm & Whimsy, an interior design rm in Jersey City, N.J. Sometimes, my jaw drops when I see the work of my customers children, she said. Childrens art displayed in a house its a home then. Like Rose, she suggests displaying kids works in art groupings. She often lays out the pieces on the oor so she and her client can visualize how they t together. You can make a beautiful arrangement, said Sadowsky, who has a painting she made as a 12-year-old hanging in her own living room. Rose laid out the items for her gallery wall on the floor, as well. She snapped

photos of various arrangements so she could compare them and went through her house to find frames in the same color palette to create cohesion in the grouping. Sadowsky has sent parents to big-box stores or craft stores to buy inexpensive frames. Its possible to nd frames with precut mats for a more professional look. Do-it-yourselfers also can use construction paper or foam core to create mats for artwork, she said. In her childrens playroom, Rose strung wire between two hooks and allows the kids to pick and choose what they want to hang up. The setup allows them to highlight favorite paintings and projects until they make something they like better. Finding a temporary place like that to

display work makes sense, agreed Jeffry Cudlin, a professor of curatorial studies and practice at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He routinely highlights the work of his 4-year-old son, Miles, at home to show him that the family values handmade art. Cudlin uses binder clips to hang Miles art in an ornate frame that usually hangs in his dining room; the clips mean he can rotate different pieces through the frame for an ever-changing display. Deciding which pieces to keep long-term can be a challenge, Cudlin said. He looks for work that includes loved ones or commemorates a special event. He routinely frames Miles work and gives it to family members who are represented in the drawing.

He also nds that he appreciates many of his sons drawings more after he asks questions about them. The art provides insights into how the preschooler views the world and helps preserve his thoughts, Cudlin said. His way of thinking about things the way he experiences the world youre not going to get that back, he said. Cali Sanker, education coordinator of the Ohio State University Urban Arts Space in Columbus, recommends saving a childs pieces from various ages to create an artistic record of his or her growth. It is not only a special way to reminisce about your childs younger years, but a special way of embracing how much they have grown, she said.

Sitting front and center on Gloucesters Western Avenue, where it has stood for more than 100 years, is this stately Colonial-style Victorian. Classic in its outward appearance, a passer-by could not even begin to envision its interior. With total renovation in mind, this home was purchased and completely transformed in just one year. According to listing agent Dick McKinley of Harborside Sothebys International Realty, the property now represents the perfect blend of old and new. This house was a typical two-family residence but it is now a beautiful restored single-family with a mix of modern-day conveniences and period charm, says the Realtor. They were very careful with the restorations by paying respect to traditional details such as the oversized windows, original crown moldings and paneling. At the same time, they recongured the infrastructure, capturing and creating additional living space. It is a remarkable alteration. Central to the main living area is a kitchen that is both spectacular in its appearance and sensible in its design. Complete with generous cabinetry, Venetian gold granite counters, top-of-the-line Jenn-Air appliances, built-in wine cooler and hardwood flooring, this room blends seamlessly with the family room for easy casual entertaining. Should you require spaces more formal, the adjacent living and dining rooms afford that exibility. Spanning the upper two levels of this home are five bedrooms and three brandnew full baths. Tips for protecting your dog and your home

PUPPY-PROOFING?

We bought food bowls, borrowed a crate and dusted off baby gates. But soon after we adopted our 13-week-old puppy, we discovered the house really wasnt ready. C l ove , a L ab r a d o r retriever mix, chewed wires we thought were hidden and investigated stairs we thought shed ignore. She rummaged through deep plastic bins holding smelly shin guards and plucked snow-soaked mittens from our warm radiators. Within a week of her arrival, we had to block off power strips, reorganize our mudroom, devise a new plan for drying winter gear and gate the staircase. Its a lot like having an infant in the household, said Pamela Barlow, animal behavior counselor at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals adoption center in New York City. Barlow says puppies need constant supervision and a safe environment to explore. She cautions against conning them so much that they dont get outside experiences. It is hard to go back and socialize puppies if owners miss the window of opportunity to do so. Puppies are drawn to things they can chew on and are stimulated by things that move, said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, director of the Penn Vet Behavior Service at the University of Pennsylvania. Many times we think that we should protect our home from a new puppy, Siracusa said, because the puppy could potentially cause damage. But more important is the opposite: making sure that puppies are safe in their new home.

Experts advise puppy-owners to gate off rooms where they dont want their puppy to roam.
occasionally put Teddy in the crate when she needed to do something and couldnt watch him; now a bit older, hes just in the crate when she leaves the house and at night, when he sleeps. Puppy-behavior experts recommend these steps to protect your puppy at home: Gate off rooms where you dont want your puppy to roam. For instance, one of Barlows clients is an artist with a studio in her house. The artist gated off the studio so the puppy couldnt run around the easels, paint and chemicals. Let puppies earn their freedom. Give them one space or room at a time. That way, owners can actively supervise them and limit any bad behavior. Create a safe confinement area a crate or exercise pen, for instance where the puppy can stay when you are not home. There should be enough space for a sleeping area and a potty area when puppies are very young. Also essential are a non-spill water bowl and safe, enriching toys. Toys that are not safe for this area

Important papers should be moved out of reach of puppies.

Most essential is to create a safe haven a place where the puppy can rest and sleep when there is too much excitement or stimulation, such as when kids have friends visiting, Siracusa says. For the Sullivan family of South Orange, N.J., a crate has proven to be more useful for keeping their puppy, Angus, safe than his exercise pen has. Angus, a Bichon Frise-poodle mix now 5 months old, learned how to get out of the pen the first day, said Elie Sullivan. She keeps the door of his crate, located in her sons room, open. Hell go in there and have a nap, she said as Angus, as soft as a skein of cashmere, cuddled in her lap. Sullivan blocked stairs, moved low baskets into closets and bought tall hampers to prevent Angus from raiding the laundry. I like my house, she said. I didnt want it torn up. She also ensured that her house plants are safe for dogs. Alexis Shield was prepared with puppy gear and house-training research before bringing home Teddy, an Australian Labradoodle, when he was 9 weeks old. Thanks to her planning and consistency with Teddy, she has been amazed at how fast he learned. What she didnt expect, says Shield, who lives in a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C., was how hard it would be to prepare her three young sons and supervise them with the puppy. She has Teddys crate in the kitchen, a safe place for him amid the household hubbub. Initially, Shield would

when you are gone include tennis balls, rope toys, toys that are shorter than about double the length of the puppys snout, and stuffed toys that have glass or plastic eyes and noses, Barlow said. Tape loose electrical cords. Use outlet covers. Store cleaning chemicals out of reach. Use baby latches on cabinet doors if needed. Move breakables and valuables out of the puppys reach. Roll up new or valuable rugs until the puppy is house-trained. In your yard: Do not leave a puppy unsupervised, and be sure to fence in your yard before letting the puppy off leash. Fence off the garden. Use pet-safe gardening products, and be sure any lawn service you use does the same. Store grill utensils out of the puppys reach. Make sure a swimming pool is fenced. Check the ASPCAs list of poisonous plants. As soon as puppies are old enough, start training them, especially the drop it and leave it commands.

Tips for keeping walls, woodwork clean

Walls can get dirty before you know it from a splatter of spaghetti dinner to the crayon artistry of a roaming toddler to ngers simply reaching for a light switch. Its easy to pass by walls and woodwork every day without a second glance, but spring-cleaning season is a great time to give them the attention they deserve. Like many housekeeping tasks, regular cleaning can help avoid bigger cleanup work later on. It doesnt have to be as difcult of a job as it sounds, said Amy Panos, senior editor at Better Homes and Gardens. The easier you can make it on yourself, the more likely you are to do it. Walls tend to get dirtiest around light switches and doorknobs. Even if a hand looks clean, it still has a little dirt and oils that over time build up and eventually make that area of the wall dirty, Panos said. Walls also get marked up from accidental kicks or the brush of a bag near the baseboards. Parents know how toddlers hands often nd their way to walls, either with lthy ngers or with crayons or markers. These ngerprints and other blemishes are best tackled right away. The sooner you can get to a mark that is noticeable, the easier it will be to clean, said Sharon Grech, a color and design expert for Benjamin Moore. People are wary of cleaning or washing painted surfaces because they fear the process will remove the paint. But Grech said the technology has improved over the last decade, and paints now are more stain-resistant and durable for cleaning. Still, its important to use the right products.

Theyre quite incredible, Panos said. They take care of a lot. Dont forget doorways and trim, often coated in easyto-wipe paints but in light colors like white and cream that make marks especially visible. Cleaning those areas can instantly make the room seem brighter. It really glistens, Grech said. Its like putting on a nice lip gloss. While most people know to take care of an unsightly mark, many overlook cleaning the whole wall, Panos said. Once you have a fresh coat of paint, lightly dust the walls about every three months. You dont need to get a bucket and soap and sponge and completely wash down the walls, she said. Make it easy on yourself by getting a tool with an extension pole so that you can stand on the ground and take care of the job in just a few minutes rather than having to drag out a ladder. Clean the ceiling rst, with a dust-attracting microber mop on the extension pole for smooth ceilings, or a slightly damp paint roller on the pole for a popcorn ceiling, she said. The walls can be cleaned from top to bottom with the mop (dry or slightly damp), and the baseboards hand-cleaned with a microber cloth. Keeping the environment as dust-free as possible is helpful for a good interior air quality, Panos said. After years of simple solids and geometric prints, the lowly ower is making a comeback in decor. Floral patterns have been blooming all over fashion runways in recent months, and they are slowly nding their way back into the world of home decorating, too. It wasnt long ago that any mention of oral upholstery or wallpaper brought back memories of 1980s cabbage roses, owery Shabby Chic borders stenciled high on bedroom walls, and suburban homes designed to feel like precious cottages swathed in pink and green. But todays new patterns arent your grandmothers florals. And they can be a refreshing antidote to the minimalist patterns that have dominated home decorating in recent years. Its what were all craving, says New York-based designer Jon Call, founder of Mr. Call Designs. Its romance, its a softness ... and it feels fresh again, because no one has dened it for our generation. While brands like Laura Ashley delineated the oral look of a generation ago, the new florals have no rules, which makes them more fun and more challenging to use successfully. prints can look modern if theyre printed on you personally, Burnham suggests. Nothing a very small scale, especially if theyre used corny, nothing ordinary, she says. You want on smaller items like throw pillows. something really special. You might try chinoiseries that include

Another option is choosing a pattern thats more botanical than ower-lled. Homeowners with aversions to supergirly orals featuring rosebuds or elaborate petals may nd botanicals a better t, says Flynn. While oral prints include shapes and silhouettes of actual owers, botanicals rely more on stems and leaves. Call points out that designers like Vivienne Westwood have created digitized, pixilated oral prints that mix traditional and modern style. But, he says, even the most classic chintz fabrics can look great in a modern home if theyre handmade and high quality. Flynn encourages clients to mix oral patterns with other prints. The oral cottage style of a decade ago was all florals and ribbons, Flynn says. Anytime Im dealing with a home occupied by couples arguing over masculine and feminine styles, Im likely to mix botanicals or orals with classic masculine prints such as gingham, check or plaid. That juxtaposition of classic girly prints with iconic patterns used for mens spaces creates a modern, gender-neutral room.

Floral patterns can work especially well on sleek, modern pieces of furniture, Burnham says. Rather than choosing a oral sofa thats rounded and tufted, use oral upholstery on a simple sofa with straight, clean lines. And rather than hanging oral draperies in a bedroom or choosing a oral bedspread, use solid colored fabrics in those locations and then upholster the headboard in a bold, oversize oral.

WHERE TO USE IT?

WHAT COLORS?

Interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn says the trick to using orals in fresh new ways is to choose over-scale botanical fabrics rather than traditional orals with small pattern repeats.

A great pattern can look dated if you pick the wrong color palette, says Flynn. Florals with mustard yellow and burgundy palettes instantly feel old and stuffy. To make them fresh and fun, look for those with unexpected color palettes, such as black and violet or springy greens and punchy pinks. The pattern will keep its classic appeal, but with a youthful update. Burnham says oral patterns done in just two colors (or in two shades of the same color) can look more modern than orals that include several colors. And if you go for something on a crisp white background, she says, it might read more current than something on a tea-dye thats more muted. Calls thinks just about any color can work, though he prefers to steer clear of Flynn uses affordable navy blue prints to pinks and purples. It gets too sweet, too make an otherwise feminine den a bit more endearing, he says. You have to be careful gender neutral. with the sentimentality, he says, or youll lose some of the modern edge.

This handsome antique cape is right at home in the North Shore community of Hamilton, famous for its historic homes and pastoral landscapes, fox hunts and polo matches. With its great schools and proximity to all coastal living has to offer, no wonder this rural/suburban community has been listed among Boston Magazines Best Places to Live. Built circa 1780, this elegant home is set on Cutler Road, a lightly traveled country road near the conservation trails of Appleton Farm. The large Royal Barry Wills living room addition is reproduction elegance, with handhewn ceiling beams, built-in bookcases and feathered vertical paneling, which mimics the tongue and groove style of woodworking from the 1600 and 1700s. The large bay window fills the room with natural light. There are four brick chimneys with fireplaces throughout the home. The master bedroom offers plenty of closet space and is accessible via a separate staircase for added privacy. The kitchen is a true country kitchen, complete with butcher-block counters and a Franklin stove. You can look out the windows and see horses next door. Among the thoughtful details, the bathtub in the childrens bathroom is separated from the toilet and sink by pocket doors, tremendously helpful for parents, especially after an afternoon romping on the conservation trails. This is a comforting house, said Realtor Peter Dorsey of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. It is cozy, but not small, just very pleasing. One of the main focal points

The home ofce, it seems, is going the way of the fax machine. Interior designers say families are nding more inventive uses for their homes extra little rooms optimistically called bonus rooms by real estate agents. With the spread of wireless Internet and portable devices such as tablets, its common now to send spreadsheets and emails from any room in the house, not to mention the nearest coffee shop. In fact, among major homerenovation projects, homeofce improvements provide the puniest return on the investment when a home is resold, according to Remodeling magazines 2013 cost vs. value report. So instead of that dust-collecting desk, many families are seeking creative ways to customize these alcoves as game rooms, dressing rooms, small theaters and more. I get this question a lot, says Elizabeth Cb Marsh, an associate interior designer at Jenkins Baer Associates in Baltimore. Especially in large, new-construction homes, there are these bonus rooms that are just there. When her clients make over a pre-existing office, she usually recommends trying to preserve any builtin features, such as shelving or cabinetry. If the space is large enough, she says, one option is to create a billiards room. Find a small (7-foot) pool table to place in the center of the room. If theres a wood counter, retrot the top with a waterproof material such as stone for an elegant wet bar, and if you have the budget, install plumbing for a small sink. Whether you draw inspiration from Downton Abbey or certain Beverly Hills housewives, the rst step is to install a wall of shelving for shoes and clothes. Keep the decor minimalist, she advises, with a neutral paint color, a pair of sconces, and a tufted ottoman in the center of the room. Personal libraries are retreats

With the advent of tablets, cellphones and e-readers, could the book-lined home library go the way of the formal dining room? Not a chance, designers and retailers say. Digital and print books can co-exist, says House Beautifuls editor in chief Newell Turner. When theres an endless river of (digital) content, the words, text and images we choose to print and bind into a physical book will make (it) even more special, he said. And books, in their variety of shapes and sizes, can be art in their own right, he says. Certainly, many people display richly illustrated coffee table books. And at Hearsts October 2013 Designer Visions show house in New York, Jamie Drake took the books-as-art notion literally: For his House Beautiful apartment, he turned large books spine sides in and stacked them geometrically in wall recesses to ank a replace as sculptural art. Books are precious and beautiful, both their contents and materials. Create an enveloped space by running shelves up to the ceiling; wood tones keep the ambience warm, but consider white or even an interesting color creamy yellow or rich carmine (deep red), for example so books, accessories and art will pop. For a distinguished touch, add a rolling library ladder. Spanish design house Playofce turns a run-of-the-mill home library into a playhouse with a sturdy mesh net suspended across the whole space like an enormous hammock. Nothing can replace the wonderful feel of sitting curled up with a book, or the happenstance of discovering a book on the shelf that you havent seen for a while, particularly books on art, architecture or design, she say. I think well always love the physical aspect of a book in hand, but Ive found I buy more and more of my new ction online. New York interior designer Elaine Grifn sees the role of home libraries changing. Weve come a long way from the English country home-inspired libraries of the 80s those spaces that looked like Carson (the butler on Downton Abbey) might come in at any moment to do a little dusting, Grifn says. Todays home libraries are retreats, actually places to retreat as an individual from the more chaotic, group-themed spaces of the rest of the house. Home libraries are reading sanctuaries, she says, but clients often want a TV included. The space is an alternative to the great room, used for solo viewing, for snuggling, for seclusion. Are you tired of hearing recycle, recycle, recycle? It is a good thing to do, so do it. But you can also repurpose items and use them yourself. Take, for example, an old bicycle wheel. Decorate it with some garland or whatever the season calls for, and you will have an interesting wreath to display. How about an old mattress spring? This can be from

any bed be it full size, king size or even crib size. Attach the mattress spring on the wall and you have a message board. Clothespins can be used to attach the messages or the pictures you wish to display. Or, instead of a message board, the mattress spring can be used to hang clothes. Just put the clothes on hangers and hook the hangers to the springs. Do you have an old wooden ladder? Separate it and use the side with the rungs on the wall. Hang the

rungs vertically on the wall and you have an instant book shelf or knickknack rack. And since the ladder is wood, you can paint it any color that suits your decorating needs. Did you injure a leg or foot and have to use crutches? And are those crutches stored someplace just in case? Well, how about repurposing them? Turn the crutches into a standing shelf by removing the rubber caps at the bottom and sawing off the round

pieces of wood that the caps were covering. Hinge the bottom. Flip the crutches so the arm supports are on the oor and the bottom, with the hinged part facing the ceiling. You have two places to add shelves, the bottom where the arm supports are and the middle where your hands grabbed the crutches. If only two shelves work for you, youre done. If you want more shelves, screw in little braces on each of the crutches wherever you want to add another shelf.

Old suitcases make for interesting repurposing. An end table or a nightstand can be made by attaching the suitcase to a four legged backless stool. Done. Thats all you need to do. Or you can use an old suitcase to make a dog bed. Open the suitcase and place a cushion inside. Done again. Or you can take the top off the suitcase and just use the bottom with a cushion inside. Old umbrella hooks can be used to make a coat rack. Cut off the hooks from the

umbrellas and attach them to a board. Attach the board to the wall and your hooks are ready to use. Repurposed items make for interesting decorations for your home; they are unique and personally yours.

The White Silsbee House offers unsurpassed sophistication

The White Silsbee House offers such unparalleled grace and museum quality architecture that the discriminating buyer lucky enough to call the residence home will have to resist the urge to rope off areas and post Dont Touch signs. This iconic brick Federal home was constructed in 1811 by a leading Salem builder for one of early Americas masters of the universe. Joshua Upham, the master mason who constructed the residence, also built several notable Salem buildings including the old City Hall in Derby Square. Uphams efforts became the home of shipping magnate Joseph White Jr., who with his wife, Eliza, quickly rose to the top of Salem society. The Whites were famous for their elaborately decorated mansion as well as the all-night parties they threw for social and political favorites. Lovingly restored to every inch of its former grace, the home today offers all of the gentility and elegance of the 19th century, enhanced by all new wiring and plumbing that is happily enjoyed but not seen. The twin drawing rooms were featured in Salem Interiors, Samuel Chamberlains seminal work on the two centuries of New England taste and decoration. Throughout the home, handcrafted molding, gleaming hardwood floors and charming wainscoting confirm Chamberlains contention that residence represents the best of early 19th-century New England. This house has one of the nest interiors of any Federal house in Salem, observes listing agent Ted Richard, vice president of J Barrett

On the East Coast, another room that joins the White Silsbee House as a canvas for Zuber wallpaper is the diplomatic reception room at the White House. The gourmet chefs kitchen offers top-quality appliances and soapstone countertops. The stunning custom cabinets offer both function and form. The 17-by-15-squarefoot kitchen boasts a center island, service pantry and breakfast bar/nook ideal for cereal and juice in the morning, homework in the afternoon and hors doeuvres and cocktails for the grownups at night. The second-floor offers two generous bedrooms with ceiling fans, a full bath and the laundry, as well as the master bedroom suite with private bath and walk-in closet. The top level features a three-quarter bath and two more bedrooms, for a total of ve. There are replaces throughout the home one in each bedroom as well as the kitchen, living room, dining room and sitting rooms. One of the homes most stunning features is the oating staircase which rises all the way to the third oor, adds Richard. Floating staircases appear to do just that oat in space as a means of ascending to upper levels, but with no visible means of support like one sees in traditional staircases. It was built by amazing designers who understood both beauty and the laws of physics. The artfully designed grounds bring a delightful English garden with a koi pond worthy of a Jane Austen heroine contemplating her next move. What Miss Austen would have referred to as an out building is here a stunning carriage house with its own gorgeous loft apartment perfectly suited as home to an au pair, returning college graduate, or for use as a rental property. Ideally situated in North Washington Square, the residence is steps from the best of Salems shops, museums, restaurants and historic attractions. The residence is offered at $1.45 million. ictorian garden style lives on

BYKIM COOK ASSociaTED PRESS Those drawn to 19th century style may be pleased to learn that vintage garden decor is a trend this spring and summer. The look involves florals, weathered wood, wire, period typography, bird motifs and accessories, and other elements with a Victorian vibe, says Tom Mirabile, a trend watcher for Lifetime Brands. Rare opportunity to own a piece of American history in downtown Salem

Designed to announce, in no uncertain terms, that the Sprague family had arrived on the early 19th century Salem merchant scene, the Sprague-Peabody-Silsbee House located in downtown Salem is a rare opportunity to own a piece of history. Situated on 17,160 square feet with nearly 7,000 square feet of living space, its the kind of home that can be called a mansion without setting off anyonespretensionalarm its not pretentious if it really is a mansion. The impressive, three-story brick residence is homage to Federal style with strict attention to symmetry, yet with the renement that distinguishes this homes style from its slightly bulkier Georgian counterparts. And in fact, architectural details of the home have been attributed to Samuel McIntire, Salem architect and one of the countrys godfathers of Federal style. The stable behind the home features the central arch design that McIntire is credited with introducing to Salem during this historical period. In addition to the stable, its believed that a number of the homes wooden replaces were designed by McIntire, as well, says listing agent Andrea Dodge of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of Salem. The house has 10 total replaces, many of which are marble, but the wooden fireplaces are attributed to McIntire. Sold by the Spragues to the Peabodys, fellow shipping moguls, in 1822, the home came into the hands of the Silsbee family in 1840. Not content to simply dominate Salems thriving merchant seaport, the Silsbees also dabbled in politics, contributing a Salem mayor, as

There are so many things that make the home a unique residence, but one thing that really sets its apart from other Salem historic mansions is its size, adds Dodge. There are very few homes in Salem that offer nearly 7,000 square feet of living space on a 17,000 square foot lot. The house has managed to escape the mansion to condoapartment conversion, says Dodge, because, despite being 200 years old, it hasnt changed hands very often. Making your own laundry detergent can be easy

BYJENNIFER FORKER ASSoCiaTeD PreSS Its convenient to pick up some laundry detergent at the store, but its not difcult to create your own. Soap and water are a timetested duo against dirt and germs, and homemade cleaners can carry away grime without added chemicals or perfumes. All it takes are a few, simple ingredients to make laundry detergent liquid or powder and fabric softener. Then cut down on drying time and static cling by tumbling wet clothes with homemade dryer balls. Faith Goguen Rodgers switch to homemade cleaners began a few years ago after she used a commercialbrand cleaner on the bathtub. Id cleaned it, and then I really didnt want to get in it. The bleach smell and feel it didnt feel good, she says. Then when I had kids, it didnt make sense at all. It feels a lot safer knowing whats in my cleaners. Rodgers is an herbalist with three young children who creates all the cleaners she uses in her Lafayette, Colo., home even the toothpaste. While the health piece is really big for her, shes also motivated by cost. You save a ton of money making your own, she says, especially if you buy ingredients in bulk. Homemade cleaners, particularly laundry soap, lack much odor, but a pretty scent can be added with essential oils. This lifts the laundrydetergent-making project up a notch adding some olfactory fun. You and your family can get creative and come up with your own signature laundry scent, Rodgers writes on The Little Herbal or twice before adding to the wash. Use 1/4 cup per average load; 1/2 cup for extra large or heavily soiled loads. Supplies 3 cups white vinegar 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 20 drops of essential oil (optional) Directions Combine all ingredients in a glass jar and shake. Add to the fabric softener dispenser of washing machine. Supplies 100 percent wool yarn Pantyhose Essential oil (optional) Directions 1. Wrap wool yarn around two or three ngers at least a dozen times, then make a bow by wrapping yarn tightly around middle of wrapped yarn. Bring the two sides together and continue wrapping tightly in different directions to make a small ball the size of a lemon. Repeat to make several balls. 2. Push the wool balls into one pantyhose leg, knotting the pantyhose between each ball so they dont touch. Run through the washer with a load of towels on hot cycle, then toss into dryer on hot. Once dry, remove from pantyhose. Each ball should appear felted the wool bers tightly adhered. Snip any loose strands. To use 1. Scent balls with essential oil, if desired (itll last a few loads). 2. Toss at least 2 balls into dryer with wet laundry.

blog, where she posts her natural cleaning recipes. Our laundry comes out clean and smelling fresh. Her favorite combinations of essential oils for laundry detergent include lemon and eucalyptus, orange and geranium, and grapefruit and lavender. Sherri Grifns foray into homemade laundry soap began when she got a rash and wanted something gentler than store-bought laundry detergent. She started researching alternatives, and recommends checking out whats in commercially made products on the Environmental Working Groups website. An Orlando, Fla., nurse, Griffin started a blog, Overthrow Martha, to educate people about natural cleaners. Besides sharing a fabric softener recipe, she recommends simpleto-make dryer balls. Dryer balls decrease drying time, eliminate static cling and decrease wrinkles, she says. Essential oils can be added to them every few loads to softly scent clothes. I often hear that people cant give up the fresh smell they get from using dryer sheets, but what people dont understand is that smell comes from ... chemicals, says Grifn. BACKYARD PONDS

S46

Every year about the same time, Lee Neiman walks outside to his backyard in the morning and impatiently counts the days. Its not until late March or early April that the backyard paradise at his Pittsburgh home usually returns to life. The cascading waterfall starts running again and the pond catching it thaws. The sh that went dormant below a sheet of ice during the winter swim back into view. Im looking forward to that rst cup of coffee by the pond, said Neiman, a doctor practicing internal medicine. What I really like is at night when I can open the windows and hear the waterfall. Backyard ponds, which range from the simple to the elaborate, can become a passion for many gardeners. And technological improvements over the past 15 years have made it easier and more economical than ever to build one. The pumps today are much more energy-efcient and last a lot longer, said Randy Stewart, division manager for Pondliner.com, a Shawnee, Okla.-based company that has been selling such supplies since 1998. As for the ltration systems, some can clean with minimal maintenance. You can now maintain your pond wearing dress clothes instead of standing in the pond, pulling out the system and getting dirty. Neiman was introduced to backyard ponds about 15 years ago when several of his friends had them. I was envious of what I saw and decided to proceed and do it myself with the help of my son, Neiman said. Three years ago, he hired

someone to expand the original pond. It now stands 6 feet wide and 12 feet long, and has 16 fish koi, goldfish and one catsh. The larger pond is more practical and benecial for sh and plants, Neiman said. Plus, it looks nicer. Many people who build backyard ponds end up expanding them, said Bob Dorrance, founder and operator of www.backyardpond-guide.com, a website devoted to amateur pond enthusiasts. The rst one never seems big enough, Dorrance said. Youre always adding something little to it lights, flowers, bushes, whatever your taste is. You can probably look at 100 ponds and they are all different. You can make it your own according to whatever you like. Getting started, he said, is the most daunting step. The hardest part is digging the hole, he said. If you get a couple strong people to get out there and build the hole, youre in good shape. Before you dig, design the pond, taking into consideration the surrounding trees and vegetation, he said. Be sure to follow any homeowners association or other regulations for the property. Once the hole is dug, Dorrance said, line it with a quality, thick liner. Investing a little more will be worth it to avoid holes or tears. Its a myth that backyard ponds do best in warm climates, he said. They can thrive pretty much anywhere. Northern ponds just need a little extra preparation for winter. All you have to do is get a lightweight net and put it over the top of the pond to keep leaves and debris out of it, Dorrance said. Also, make sure you pull any

accessories out of the water, like filters or UV lights, so they dont freeze. Those who live in colder climates may lose some vegetation each winter, but if you plan you can minimize the loss. And winter should not hurt the sh that call your backyard pond home. All the sh will go to the very bottom of the pond and go dormant for the winter, Dorrance said. You do need to have a small hole to allow

any gases to escape. Algae buildup is usually the biggest problem pond owners face wherever they live, he said. The solution is a water pump and an ultraviolet clarier, a small device that exposes algae to UV light and kills it. They can run anywhere from $100 to nearly $2,000. Living in warm, central Florida, Sonny Alansky gets to enjoy his pond year-round. Just off his backyard porch, the pond measures 37 feet in diameter, and includes three waterfalls, 14 koi, and a plethora of tropical vegetation such as palm trees, hibiscus and birds of paradise. Alansky, a retired electrician, designed the pond about three years ago when he moved into his Rockledge, Fla., home. Im out here every day enjoying it, Alansky said. I love coming out and feeding the fish. They see me coming and they swim right up to me. Hes always adding something new, whether its more decorative stones or more devices to deter predators; hes already lost one sh to a heron. Fake alligators and owls and even a motiondetector sprinkler help protect the sh. He has spent roughly $20,000 on the pond so far. It has three pumps, which run constantly, resulting in a $100 per month increase to Alanskys electric bill. He said the extra expense is worth the enjoyment he and his wife get out of the pond. Friends and neighbors also admire the view and enjoy the murmur of the waterfalls. Nothing relaxes us more than watching the koi fish swimming among the lily pads with the brightly colored lily flowers, Alansky said.
