FirstCarbon Solutions Conquers Hollywood by Michele Hincks
AT THE GALA (Left to Right) Michael
Brandman, Laurie Goldman of
Hollywood Central Park, Jason
Brandman, Robert Francisco and
Michele Hincks.
FirstCarbon Solutions celebrated the New Year with the
announcement that weve been selected to prepare various
environmental studies to support the groundbreaking Hollywood
Central Park project. Providing well-needed green space to one of
the most densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Hollywood
Central Park is a planned 44-acre street level community park built
OVER a one-mile stretch of the Hollywood Freeway (US 101) as the
freeway travels below grade between Hollywood and Santa Monica
Boulevards.
FirstCarbon Solutions was competing against five firms who
submitted proposals which were evaluated by community board
members, legal counsel and The California Department of
Transportation consultants. In-person interviews were conducted
in December 2012, and on January 10, 2013, the selection of
FirstCarbon Solutions was announced at the For Love of Hollywood
Gala fundraising dinner benefiting the Hollywood Central Park.
The FirstCarbon Solutions team will provide
a whole host of technical analyses in
conformance with California Environmental
Quality Act (CEQA) and National
Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements
including community impact assessments,
traffic/circulation studies, noise and vibration
assessments, air quality studies, as well
as conducting geotechnical and hazards/
hazardous materials investigations.
Coincident with this big win, FirstCarbon
Solutions also opened a new Los Angeles
office on Wilshire Boulevard to expand our
ability to offer fully integrated environmental
sustainability solutions to our growing base of
clients and prospects in the region.

This first quarter of 2013 for ADEC Group was truly phenomenal!
We celebrated the Chinese New Year with sticky rice cakes (known here in the Philippines as
Tikoy), fortune cookies and a Lion Dance with a surprise ending at the quadrangle of our Las
Pias facility. Kung Hei Fat Choi!
We were very excited with the news that we were selected to prepare the necessary
environmental documents in support of Hollywood Central Park a big undertaking to connect
bifurcated communities along the Hollywood Freeway (US 101) and at the same time make the
neighborhood a bit greener.
In addition, we recently launched BPOAsia Institute (BAI) to address the growing demands of the
IT-BPO Industry in the Philippines. BAI will introduce various BPO skill sets used by entry-level
professionals to college students so once they graduate, they will have a much higher likelihood
of getting hired by a BPO company including ADEC Group, of course. Its a win-win situation for
everyone, most especially the new graduates.
In line with BAI, we have taken steps towards strengthening the relationship between ADEC
Group and Silay Institute, an educational facility in Negros Occidental, Philippines, by attending
their 88th Foundation Day and Alumni Homecoming. The whole town was abuzz with activity and
welcomed us with such warmth and hospitality. It will definitely be remembered fondly.
Several of our AMDATEX colleagues were honored with a Service Award for having been with us
for 10 years! We thank you for your loyalty and service and for being an inspiration to everyone.
Finally, ADEC Group was chosen as a finalist under two major categories Most Innovative
IT-BPO Company of the Year and IT-BPO Company of the Year in the recently concluded
International ICT Awards. This honor is shared to all the employees of ADEC Group who tirelessly
strive to bring CERTIC into their work.
As 2013 progresses, we look forward to reading your individual stories and milestones within the
pages of ADEC Group Today along with the successes of each of our brands.
Lets keep the momentum going as we move into the 2nd quarter as a much stronger ADEC
Group!

ADEC Solutions-USA
Getting Off to a Great Start
by Joe Klingbiel
Theres a lot going on at ADEC SolutionsUSA including new customer
wins, a customer expansion, and upgrading our infrastructure.
For our new customer, a leading provider in Cooperstown, New York
and home of the US Baseball Hall of Fame, ADEC SolutionsUSA will
scan and index patient medical charts for use in their electronic medical
records system. The project is expected to last about eight months and
involve over 7.5 million images.
Our next new customer, a data management company, will work with us
for verification and quality auditing for their Field Services organization.
In addition, FedEx expanded their accounts receivable projects so we
are further entrenched in their business.
To shore up and upgrade our infrastructure to provide better service to
all ADEC Group customers in the United States, we are taking the lead
in merging ADEC SolutionsUSAs Shelbyville, Kentucky data center into
FirstCarbon Solutions data center in Irvine, California. This initiative
was completed at the end of February. The consolidation of the data
centers will significantly increase FirstCarbon Solutions computing
capabilities, while providing ADEC SolutionsUSA a footprint on the
West Coast.
Survey Says by Cheruby Geron
Three months after our Mandarin Online (MOL) Program was
launched in Pasig Catholic College (PCC) in the Philippines, we have
been receiving great reviews from the students who took part in the
classes. 167 (equivalent to 5 classes) out of the 177 students of
MOL took part in the most recent survey.
This survey focused on three aspects: lesson, teacher and
technology. Overall, 82% mentioned that the course meets their
expectations; 80% of respondents indicated they will be able to
apply the knowledge gained from the course; and 89% find the
instructional materials useful and relevant.
One answer to the open-ended question caught our attention and
proves just how eager the students are to learn using the latest
technology. The question was What I like about this course is and
the answer we received was:
Its a whole new thing for me. Having headsets, a teacher from
China, audio and video conferencing is absolutely cool!
Wanting to further introduce the Chinese language and culture to
these children, A-Plus staff dropped by PCC during the Chinese New
Year and held a special activity session with games like Quiz Bee,
Pinoy Henyo (a popular word-guessing game in the Philippines) and
relay games using chopsticks.
A-Plus will continue to improve the MOL Program and accept the
challenges of delivering it to a huge number of enrollees in various
schools within Metro Manila, Philippines this coming school year
(2013-2014).

Field of Dreams by Bong Dureza
ADEC Australia Announces
a New Arrival by Justin Holt
2013 is shaping up to be a very busy year for our Document
Management Bureau. With a large defense contract signed, we
needed to procure a second IBML scanner. These machines are at
the forefront of imaging technology, producing 400 images a minute
or in production terms 2 million images a month under normal shift
conditions. But the volume of work that the team will be undertaking
in Australia in 2013 required two of these units to help us achieve
our promised goals to our clients.
Unlike standard document scanners that can be purchased from
a supplier, the IBML has to be purchased directly from the United
States. Working with our FirstCarbon Solutions office in Irvine,
California, the unit weighing in at a total of 1580 lbs. /716 kg was
air freighted via UPS to the Australia office in Sydney.
Due to the complicated nature of how these units operate, and to be
eligible for support from IBML, each unit was installed by a specialist
who flew out from the UK and stayed in Sydney for two weeks just
to install and configure these scanners to our systems. Running
on three servers utilizing the latest in LED image production and
data recognition software, this is a major asset to the Australian
operations increasing our ability to produce clients work faster
and more cost-effectively than any of our current competitors in
Australia.
A new canvass is a powerful thing. It can inspire a masterpiece from
the depths of your imagination. It can encourage one to think of
possibilities. It can make you dream of a future reality.
Silay Institute is our new canvass.
In what others may view as a provincial college in a laid-back
community, ADEC Group saw a world-class BPO campus with several
smart buildings within the sprawling grounds, the future faculty
and staff going about their daily duties, and the would-be students
hurrying to their next classes. We saw all of this in an empty field. The
sights and sounds of the future became all the more crystal clear to
us when James Donovan said this is our field of dreams.
It may take a few years for this vision to be a reality, but what is
important is the seed that was planted in our minds. A seed that will
grow and drive us towards the end-goal: that we have a responsibility
to the community and to the youth of Silay, who are the primary
beneficiaries, to make this vision happen.
Giving the youth the skill sets, know-how, and knowledge to be able to
start working as soon as they graduate is something you cannot put
a price tag on. We are giving them pride in their upbringing, in their
community, in their school and most especially in themselves.
Silay Institute dares us to dream our field of dreams and take action
to make the dream a reality.
this is a major asset to the Australian
operations increasing our ability to
produce clients work faster and more
cost-effectively than any of our current
competitors in Australia.
The IBML Scanner is capable of producing 2 million images a
month under normal shift conditions.
Translation Services: Plugging the Brain Drain

GLOBAL HIGHLIGHTS
One of the many facets of PharmaKPO is translation services.
Documents, whether informed consent forms (ICFs) and revisions,
questionnaires, logs, medical brochures, leaflets and literature, are
translated by a medically trained team from English into several
Philippine local languages, retaining the grammatical and contextual
origin of the file. Part of the translation process is to ensure the
highest quality of deliverables, which includes a verification process,
sometimes even a two-step verification process. In other instances,
clients may request additional and optional legal review to be
able to submit the documents according to the standards of the
pharmaceuticals ethics committees.
PharmaKPO offers a different set of work gloves to individuals who
have finished an undergraduate degree in medically-related fields
like nursing, pharmacy and medical technology. In countries like the
Philippines, where there are many such individuals but few well-paying
jobs available to them, their option is to leave the country to look for
greener pastures abroad. PharmaKPO gives them the opportunity to
stay and work within the country, be paid well and still use what they
have learned in college.

Our translation services support many languages including Simplified
Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Companies like Parexel and Novartis are
just some of PharmaKPOs satisfied clients.
PharmaKPO has gone to market with productized offerings, yet
remains flexible in providing services that are dictated by the market,
without sacrificing its objective of moving up the value chain.
Knowing the importance of balancing economic performance with
social responsibility, Mecomb Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Mecomb Group),
a subsidiary of Sime Darby, Malaysias leading multinational
conglomerate, and represented by its General Manager
Shankaralingam Sapgunalingam, signed a contract with FirstCarbon
Solutions (FCS) in December of 2012.
In the contract, FCS is tasked to monitor and track both the
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and sustainability metrics of
10 Sime Darby buildings in Malaysia using our Sustainability
Workbench software platform. We believe this endeavor between
Sime Darby, through Mecomb Group, and FCS is the start of a very
fruitful business relationship that will forward sustainability efforts
especially in countries where Sime Darby offices are located.
Standing as witness during the contract signing was Blue Snow CEO
Bernard Sagaiyaraj. Blue Snow, one of our channel partners, has
been very supportive in helping to promote our end-to-end solutions
and services within the country and in the region when possible.

A Double-Double for ADEC Group
ADEC Group was hailed as a finalist in two categories IT-BPO Company of the Year
and Most Innovative IT-BPO Company of the Year at the International ICT Awards
Philippines 2013. Group CEO James Donovan and CFO Carol Esguerra received the
trophies on March 14 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. Also present were Mark Barro,
Anthony Catajan, Edith David, Lorna Lopez, Michelle Tan, Shane Petrescu, Alfred
Meneses and James Butial. The honor is reminiscent of last years Asia CEO Awards
when ADEC Group also made it as a finalist in two categories.
Ushering in the
Year of the
Water Snake
The over-all outlook for 2013 is that
this year will be calm, gentle and
subtle wherein everyone can focus
on their businesses. Depending on
the main focus of your business, your
organization is under one of the five
elements of the universe wood, fire,
earth, metal and water.
Earth: An excellent year with plenty
of opportunities. Metal: Tailwind! It
will be a bright year and should see
a strong recovery. Wood: While it
may not be a fantastic year, it will be
good. Fire: It will not be a good year
since there are more obstacles than
opportunities. Water: This would not
be a good year for even if your firms
are busy your profit margins will be
slim.
ADEC Group Supports
Earth Hour
Switching off our lights for an hour sounds like a drop in the bucket
towards saving the earth, but if each and every home and office on the
planet found ways of saving electricity on a daily basis, the effect will
be staggering! Do your share just as ADEC Group conitnues to support
endeavors that promote sustainability like Earth Hour.

SYSTEM MONITORING AND COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT
AMDATEX to Undergo 2nd Information Security
Management System Recertifcation Audit
by Lorevi Tolentino & Karl Marx Jimenea
In March 2007, AMDATEX successfully obtained Information Security
Management System (ISMS) certifcation. From then on, the organization
has placed its efforts in maintaining control and improving the
effectiveness of the ISMS, proving it an indispensable element in passing
recertifcation and surveillance audits.
April 2013 will mark another milestone in AMDATEX as it embarks on its
2nd Recertifcation Audit for the ISO 27001:2005 standards. The external
audit engagement, to be conducted by external consultant TUV Rheinland
Philippines Inc., will focus on major information security areas such as
Risk Management, Human Resources & Physical Security, Communication
& Operations Management, Access Control, Incident Management and
Business Continuity.
In preparation for the
forthcoming event, various
activities are lined up in
collaboration with subject matter
experts in the feld of information
security. To determine the
effectiveness of ISMS control
objectives and processes,
Internal Management System
Audit sessions with the Channels
and Support Departments are
currently being conducted by
the Corporate Standards &
Internal Audit Departments.
Simultaneously, the Business
Technology Solutions Technical
Support Group, through its PC
Sweep Activity, validates the
effectiveness of information
security controls set in all
workstations. Channel Managers
and Department Heads are
regularly convened to review
information security risk
identifcation and management.
On top of these activities, the Information Security Group regularly carries
out penetration tests including vulnerability scans to ensure our systems
have no Achilles heel. Moreover, the team released awareness videos
as part of their campaign to educate all employees of the relevance
of information security activities and how they can contribute to the
achievement of ISMS objectives.
Business Process Associates, managers and executives play a vital role
in the successful implementation of the ISMS. By simply knowing and
conforming to the different policies like Computer & Internet Security,
Password Management, Virus Protection, Computer Ethics, Physical
Security and Data Information Protection among others, employees can
bridge the knowledge gap and protect information & information assets
within the business environment.
MEDICAL SERVICES
Dont be Toast
by Clinic Staff
For our colleagues in Australia, winter is approaching. For our
colleagues in North America and Europe, you are coming into spring.
And for us in Manila, summer is here!
We know that you have heard this before, but we would like to
reiterate the importance of protecting your skin from the harmful
rays of the sun when you go out.
Whether its swimming, beach volleyball, banana boat riding, or
simply lounging outdoors, you are exposing your skin to harmful
ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Tanning booths are just as bad.
According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma accounts
for only a small percentage in terms of skin cancer type, but it is
the most dangerous kind. It is the cause of nearly 9,000 out of the
12,000 skin cancer deaths each year in the US.
Ironically, melanoma starts in the melanocytes. These are the cells
that produce melanin (skin pigment) which protects the deeper
layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. The good news
is that melanoma is almost always curable if and when detected
early.
Keep an eye on your moles for they are clusters of melanocytes. It
is very important to know the difference between an ordinary mole
and one that can grow into a melanoma. Just remember ABCDE:
Asymmetry, Borders, Color, Diameter, and Evolution. Visit Medical
Services for more information on skin cancer prevention and
detection.

together every Friday night for a different kind of bonding.
When most would go paint the town red these staff members,
including yours truly, would put on our sweats and head out
to a nearby warehouse conveniently located within the same
industrial compound and play badminton.
Aside from being good for our health, our group is finding this
activity good for inter-office relationships of the working kind
as well. During rest periods or in between games, we get to
talk about things we normally dont get a chance to talk about
how things are at the homestead or what they were doing prior
to working for ADEC Group. This small talk gives us an insight
to the kind of person we are actually working with on a daily
basis. The more we know about our team members, the more
we get to understand how valuable that person is to the team,
the department, and the company. We get to know each others
strengths and how to best utilize them and we learn about our
weaknesses and how to make the most of the situation despite
these shortcomings.

The Filipino Running Community was once again united for our fellow
Filipinos in Mindanao who were victims of flash floods and landslides
brought by Super Typhoon Pablo in December 2012. Rescue Run 2
was made possible by The Greentennial Run, a group organizing various
running activities for worthy causes here in the Philippines.
So two days before Christmas, fellow AMDATEX Happy Runner Jayson
Agustin of the Business Technology Solution (BTS) unit and I were up
very early to prepare for our duties as hydration station volunteers
and photographers under Team HyperSports. The running community,
including us, felt that we gave the best gift we could TIME. For a
minimum donation of 200 pesos, participants can enjoy running and
most importantly, contribute to the main cause of the event to help the
victims of Super Typhoon Pablo.
Anyone who wants to attend worthwhile running events like this in the

April 14: Kennon Global Marathon 2013 (21K) Baguio City,

My brothers, sisters, and I make nine,
try to guess what we are, go ahead, its fine,
but dont say I didnt warn you when your brain turns to mush.
if you dont care, then prepare for the rush!
I am so large that I have 4 parts,
ones laid in sidewalks, another is art,
a third is quite general, the last is specific,
everyone thinks that I am terrific!
My first sisters hobby is describing the world,
in fact, she described me, and my meaning unfurled,
she likes me and our third brother, and just for fun,
we follow her around, through the moonlight and sun.
Our second brothers moving, present and past,
he commands us as if were just as fast,
also, hes fickle, and it drives us all nuts,
all that undoing redoing has got to take guts!
Our second sister likes things that connect,
but for reasons unknown, she gets little respect,
perhaps its because shes always been small,
when really she leads us at times, proud and tall.
Our third brother seems to have taken my path,
but hes ever so lazy and, well, you do the math:
He sums up so much cause he hates wasting breath,
hes done it since birth, and hell do it till death.
Our third sister improves what was done by our first,
as well as brother #2 (its the worst!),
shell even improve herself, yeah, thats right,
she brags about how many things rewrites!
Our fourth brother moves in so many ways,
in, out, through, over, under, just like in a maze,
he assists brother 2 and connects him to me,
he does it with joy, and he does it with glee.
Sister 4 is quite loud, and goes solo a lot,
she leads our big group in the front, if not,
shes quite a loose cannon and curses a ton,
she interrupts others and wont stop til shes done.
Brother 5 is little known and doesnt own a lot,
in fact, 3 possessions is all hes got,
but hes quite persistent and contributes the most,
and he doesnt care that hes treated like a ghost.
So that is tale, I hope you enjoyed,
if you cant identify us, dont get annoyed,
dont worry, youll figure it out in time,
but for now, this is my final rhyme.
