NEW FIRE HOUSE - CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Dear Friends and Neighbors of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, It is with great gusto and excitement, the Salem Volunteer Fire Department is officially starting a capital campaign for a new fire station. We hope you will join us in this important initiative to meet a critical need in our community. Several years ago we were fortunate enough to have two local families and a local dairy farm donate a little over 3.2 acres of land to the fire department so we could build a new firehouse. Our current facilities do not meet our current requirements or meet the current OSHA standards. The building that the fire department owns houses two small trucks and is an old church converted into a firehouse. The second building that we house the two bigger trucks in is owned by the village and we pay a hefty rent payment. A new fire station is essential for providing excellent emergency services for our community today and in the future and it would get all of our equipment in one building. A new, improved fire station will enhance response time, promote firefighter retention and provide for a safe work and training environment. The Salem Volunteer Fire Department is an all volunteer fire department and we operate on fire contracts and many fundraising events put on by our firefighters and support group. Our call volume has been increasing every year and with the greater demands that are being put on the volunteer fire service we need to continuously keep up with our training. The Salem Volunteer Fire Department is more than the current active roster of volunteer firefighters. It consists of the entire community. This truly is a rural community fire department that provides emergency services to all residents, families, friends, tourists, and loved ones in their time of need. We would like to thank all Volunteer Firefighters both current and past, for the dedication and sacrifice they have given in providing for our community. Additionally we would like to thank all those in the community that continue to support the department. We currently have raised over $200,000.00 of the estimated $700,000.00 cost to build a new firehouse. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We had an occasion to join friends at Browns Brew Pub 417 River Street, Troy, NY. I was not expecting much from their pub fare; we were just trying out their beers. We had an outstanding Oatmeal Stout! Very smooth, no hint of bitterness, and really dark. The surprise came when they delivered the chicken pot pies, meatloaf and chicken wrap. GREENWICH FOOD PANTRY HAS OPEN HOURS - The Greenwich Food Pantry, located on the second floor of the Town Hall at 2 Academy Street, Greenwich, is now open on Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and Wednesdays, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The regular hours supplement the pantrys ongoing by-appointment schedule. SOLOMON NORTHUP PRESENTATION IN GREENWICH - In response to the renewed interest generated by the Academy Award-winning film, "Twelve Years a Slave," and as part of its mission to preserve the collective heritage of Washington County, the Washington County Historical Society invites the public to join Clifford Brown, Ph.D., as he recounts Solomon Northups remarkable story. The free program, entitled "Washington County and the Solomon Northup Story," will be held on May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Bottskill Baptist Church, 32 Church Street, Greenwich. Brown, who holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, is a professor of political history and the Robert Porter Patterson Professor of Government at Union College in Schenectady. He is also coauthor with David Fiske and Rachel Seligman, of Solomon Northup: "The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave," which was published in 2013. The book offers a comprehensive, finely researched look into Northups life, from his upbringing as the son of a former slave turned farmer, to his experiences following his incarceration. Northup was born in 1807, and lived for a time in Fort Edward, before moving to Saratoga Springs. It was from there that in 1841 - enticed by offers of work - he traveled to Washington, D.C., was kidnapped and sold into slavery.
