> In a scene from Back to the Future 2, Marty McFly mentions a series of chan- nels, which simultaneously appear on a lar- ge TV screen. That's how Robert Zemeckis imagined the future of TV back in 1989. Right now, the synergy of the Internet and TV is the concept that the producers, directors, and TV execu- tives are talking about. These two words bring together the industry's interest in @TENDENCIAS / TRENDS Cielos Argentinos : Mayo / May 2014 84 El consumo de ficcin est cambiando mucho dentro de la televisin, y al mismo tiempo las redes sociales consumen el tiempo de ocio que antes se destinaba a la TV. Famoso @English Version AA-062-082-086-WebSeries.indd 60 24/04/2014 04:18:27 p.m. @TENDENCIAS / TRENDS expanding and monopolizing the flow of information and the new forms of con- sumption that social networks and the Web have created. So, while American TV is focused on producing high quality series such as Mad Men, Breaking Bad or Homeland and is starting to create statis- tics on Twitter followers, trending topics, and fo- llowers on other networks, Argentine TV is moving with the times and producing multi-platform series. At a time in which TV consump- tion is becoming more and more fragmented every day, and pay-TV - according to Lamac, the union for the leading pay-TV channels in Latin America - earned a record audience of 50% in 2013, channels like TBS and Very Funny have launched apps that allow viewers to interact on real-time networks. An example of this is the Cupido second Screen Experience, which can be down- loaded from App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Android) and allows access to trivia, exclusive content, and participation in the program through Twitter and Facebook. In the same vein, in 2013, Aliados, produced by Cris Morena, alternated its TV broadcastings with daily seven-minute-long webisodes. An inno- vative strategy also used by other free and paid TV channels that upload content, trailers, information and exclusive con- tent to the Internet to be viewed at any time of day. Digital TV is also expanding and growing its offer with channels such as Digo, 360 Tv, Seal U, Acua Federal and Deport TV, which all generate uni- que content. Similarly, the Open Digital Content Platform (CDA) allows audiences to view short movies, documentaries, and locally produced fiction series in HD, many of them winners of the competi- tions organized by the Open Digital TV (TDA) Development Plan. In Argentina, where, according to the Office of Media, 97.6% of households have a TV, the business continues to rely on over-the- air TV ratings, created by the ubiquitous IBOPE. Still, the quality of proposals has improved and the multi-platform concept continues to grow, as can be seen by the policies introduced by Canal Encuentro - with its quality programming that follows in the steps of the BBC, with twitcams and interactive videos - and the Argentine Bank of Universal Audiovisual Contents (BACUA). "While the concept of piracy weighs hea- vily on film and music, with TV it is that same technology that allows us to open up channels of communication through streaming and adding content to through websites and social networking sites," says Pablo Manzotti, film and TV jour- nalist, who believes that the future is bright: "especially for those fic- tion series of 10 to 13 episodes that have optimized production resources and make excellent use of audiovisual language." Netflix and on demand services are part of a revolution that is becoming more popular and allows us a glimpse of a new way of watching TV. They are services that allow direct streaming, without the need to download, of series and movies online, direct to any computer, tablet, Wii, or Smart TV. What's more, partnered with DreamWorks, Netflix is already producing and streaming its own origi- nal series - such as House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey. Meanwhile, the growth of social networks, the existence of YouTube and Vimeo, and the ex- pansion of Digital TV have brought about changes not only in the way we consume TV, but in how independent audiovisual content is pro- duced and shared. Dino Balanzino, creator of Ducha - Duchaserie.com.ar - says: "The consumption of fiction is changing in the world of TV and social networks are now consuming the leisure time we previously used for watching TV. Being connected to the Web all the time, whether from your phone or computer, creates a need for entertainment that TV content cannot always satisfy. Social networks offer an exchange of art and ideas that is acces- sible to all of us." Ducha fully takes on formal experimentation: it is a web series of 16 videos, each lasting one minute, con- nected by their location and by Juan, who appears every three episodes and is the common thread in the story. Its second season is already being planned. Descartables is a series about break-ups; it is created by Franca Malfatti, Luciana Sternberg, and Constanza Zarnitzer, three graphic and sound designers who one day, amid post-dinner conversations and several meetings, decided to focus on the subject of being dumped. Descartables - Vimeo.com/descartables - consists of episodes lasting five minutes and in which the protagonists repeatedly change roles: the dumper later becomes the dumpee, creating a circle which, amid the comedy, reality, drama, and parody, delves into generational post- love. "The most posi- tive change is in the closeness between the audience and the product. The trick to drawing in Internet users is not about having a huge produc- tion or going down a certain path, but rather to create intimacy, empathy to en- tertain or to move. Audiovisual products are currently mostly consumed online, leaving theaters and TV be- hind. Descartables is a series aimed at a varied, awake, aware, and modern audience in search of instant quality en- tertainment," explain Franca, Constanza and, Luciana. In view of the emergence of this new format, larger producers and chains such as Turner have taken note and begun to commit to new ideas, refres- hing their programming. This was the case of Famoso - starring Martn Garabal, which was uploaded to YouTube as a kind of test and, after achieving 40,000 views, was broadcast on I-Sat. Or Jorge, the creation of Malena Pichot - the star of the La loca de mierda videos - which premiered on Public TV in mid-2013 and can also be followed on YouTube. The future of TV is undoubtedly on the Web. The consumption of fiction is changing in the world of TV and social networks are now consuming the leisure time we previously used for watching TV. Partnered with DreamWorks, Netflix is already producing and streaming its own original series - such as House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey. With audiences getting tired of wasting time watching commercials and plugs and of the schedules imposed by broadcasters, web series are slowly but surely taking over. We bring you the formats that are revolutionizing the multi-platform series business. Cielos Argentinos : Mayo / May 2014 86 AA-062-082-086-WebSeries.indd 61 24/04/2014 04:18:28 p.m.
