Export-Import Bank should not be Reauthorized - The Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) is up
for reauthorization at the end of September, and a bipartisan coalition is already
lobbying for its renewal. Many in Congress have sought to excuse themselves
from true accountability by suggesting Ex-Im can continue to exist with proper
reforms. However, no reform can save taxpayers from another bailout in the
event of a disastrous investment. Proposing a few superficial tweaks to Ex-Ims
loaning structure cannot correct the problems inherent in its existence.
Moreover, the Banks inefficient accounting practices and poor interior analyses
make it unlikely that any real reforms would be properly implemented. Ex-Im is
a breeding ground for cronyism and fiscal calamity,
Ex-Im Bank disrupts the free-market, Deferring Risk to American Taxpayers. - "We help
small businesses." It's a common phrase used by Washington bureaucrats and
politicians. But if they knew how the economy actually worked, the bureaucrats
and politicians would understand free markets, not New Deal-era manipulation,
are what helps small businesses grow. While the Export-Import Bank tries to
present itself as a champion for small business it really enables big business to
defer risk to American taxpayers. The most prominent beneficiaries of Ex-Ims
subsidies are not small business; "monster corporations" receive subsidies from
Ex-Im.
Export-Import Bank funneled 82.7 percent of its taxpayer-backed loan guarantees to
Boeing in 2012.
