An important note to the Learners
Verbs and verb tenses are central aspects to any spoken or written language. However, they
have always appeared to be very challenging to Learners of English as a Second Language.
Therefore, I designed this booklet, which I hope will help you to approach these language
aspects in a simplistic way to learn them successfully so that you can communicate fluently in
English. The booklet introduces and discusses the Past Simple Tense. At the end, you will be
surprised to find a comprehensive list of Irregular verbs with their past tense as well as their
past participle. The idea is that this list will serve as reference whenever you are puzzled.
As you will see, there is also a variety of texts and activities which will help you practise these
aspects integrally. I have tried my best to make the stories and activities in this booklet
interesting, clear and challenging. I just hope that, with fair work, you get the most out of it. It is
also my hope that while the booklet itself is small, the learning and vision grasped in its pages
are large.

The past simple tense
We use the past simple to talk about the specific time when something happened in the past. When we
know when such things happened.
The past simple is the same for all subjects: I/you/He/She/it/we/you/they played football yesterday.

Examples: Study Studied Marry Married Cry Cried

Regular verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant double the last consonant:
Example: Stop Stopped

forms the past in a different way. If you want to use them you should consult the list at the end of this
booklet.

We use DID as the auxiliary Verb in questions with the main verb in the infinitive.

Mr Mikidadi
When I finished standard 6 I was chosen to continue my studies at a boarding
school. The school I went to was a long way from my home. When I arrived at the
school, I made friends with Juma Mikidadi. He came from a nearby region. Juma
became a very good friend of mine.
During the Easter holidays, the students whose homes were not far from the school
were allowed to go home. Juma invited me to go with him to his home. We asked
the headmaster for permission and he let us go.
Jumas father, Mr Mikidadi, gave us a warm welcome.
A chicken was killed for us to eat. Lunchtime came. All the children in the house gathered together. A big mat
was spread for us to sit on. A plate of rice and a bowl of chicken curry were brought. There was silence. My
month watered. For a little while, we waited for Jumas father to join us.
Soon he came.He took the bowl and poured the curry on the rice. Lets eat boys. Were feasting today. Its
your day,Jumas father said, with a chicken leg in his mouth. He put the bowl which contained chicken
beside him. After two or three handfuls of rice he would take some meat and eat it. We, the boys ate only the
rice. Mr Mikidadi hadnt given us any meat yet. He would always say, Lets eat, boys. Were feasting today.
Mr.Mikidadi ate all the meat except the wings and some of the insides. Then he started giving each of us
some small pieces. Some of us got bones. I got a piece of the inside. I saw my friend Juma getting a wing.
After he had given us the meat he told us to keep it in our left hands. Nobody was to eat immediately. We
had to finish the meal and then eat whatever each of us had got.
Jumas father drank a glass of water. Then he washed his hands. He was satisfied. In a minute or two, we
also finished the meal. Then we started eating what the old man had given us. That was all.
A story from Tanzania
1. Read the text about Mr. Mikidadi again and Underline all the verbs that are in the past tense.
a) Give the Present simple of such verbs in a well structured list.
b) Example: Finished Finish Went Go made - make

2. Write ten sentences in the past tense using the verbs in your list. Use the expressions: Yesterday, Last week,
last month, last year, the day before yesterday, when, last weekend and last night.
