1. You are making 24 pounds of your own potting soil mix of sphagnum peat moss and coarse
sand. You buy the peat moss in bags that weigh approximately 2 pounds. The last time you
made potting soil, you used 9 bags of sphagnum peat moss and 4 bags of coarse sand. Use
this information to write an equation that models the possible combinations of bags of
sphagnum peat moss and coarse sand you can use.

2. You are buying $80 worth of lawn seed that consists of two types of seed. One type is a
quick-growing rye grass that costs $3.80 a pound, and the other type is a higher-quality seed
that costs $5 a pound.
a. Write an equation that models the possible combinations of each kind of rye grass you
can buy for $80.

3.8+5h=80

b. How many pounds of quick-growing rye seed can you buy if you buy 15 pounds of the
higher-quality seed?

3.8r+5(15)=80
3.8r+75=80

c. How many pounds of the higher-quality seed can you buy if you buy 18 pounds of the
quick-growing rye?

3. You can buy sheets of basic craft paper for $0.10 each and sheets of textured craft paper for
$0.13 each. Write an equation in standard form that models the possible combinations of
each kind of paper you can buy for $10.00.

0.10r+0.13t=10.00
4. You have $5.00 to spend on guitar picks. You want to buy some nylon picks for $0.35 each
and plastic picks for $0.25 each. Write an equation that models the possible combinations of
each kind of pick you can buy.

5. Marine fuel is a combination of gasoline and motor oil. The standard gasoline and oil mixture
us about 98% gasoline and about 2% motor oil. The break-in mixture for a new engine is
about 96% gasoline and about 4% motor oil. Write an equation that models the possible
combinations of each kind of mixture you can prepare using 6 gallons of gasoline.

If you prepare 4 gallons of the break-in mixture, how much gasoline will you have for the
standard mixture? How much oil do you need for this amount of break-in mixture?

6. A geologist found a one cubic foot block of ore containing iron and gold. The geologist knows
that iron weighs 500 pounds per cubic foot and gold weighs 1200 pounds per cubic foot.
Write an equation that represents the different numbers of pounds of each metal that could
be in the block.

If the block weighs 514 pounds, how many pounds of gold are in the block?

If gold is worth $8000 per pound, and iron is worth $0.25 per pound, how much is the block
of ore worth?
