Comparison of Adventists, Jehovahs Witnesses, and Mormons
As Adventists go out doing community outreach, they come
across a question if they are Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses. An
example of this took place an afternoon activity. Students from
an Adventist private school went door to door passing out fliers.
Two students knocked on a door and a man answered and asked if
the students were Jehovahs Witnesses. People are quick to call
Adventists Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons. The belief that
Adventists are similar is understandable, yet they all have
differences. This idea is typically seen during Adventist
outreach. Adventists have distinct beliefs contrary to the
beliefs of the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. To understand
how they are different, there must be a process of understanding
each denominations beliefs. There are beliefs that are contrary
to each others religion and shows their independence of what
makes each denomination different from each other. It would
seem reasonable to assume that Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses,
Son 2

and Mormons are similar, but there is contrariety in their
beliefs.
It is reasonable to say that Adventists, Jehovah's
Witnesses, and Mormons are the same because of what they do
outside of church. One thing they have in common is that they go
door to door. They are typically seen going door to door in
groups of two, dressed in a proper way: ties, dress shirts, long
dress skirts, and other formal attire. They also tend to have
something to give at the door when they go out door-knocking. It
would seem reasonable to think they are all the same because of
how they look. These ideas of the three religions make it is
easy to mistaken Adventists, Jehovahs Witnesses, and Mormons.
To start off with the difference between Jehovahs
Witnesses and Adventists would seem reasonable because they have
close connection with each other. A website written by Paul
Grundy, a well-known Jehovahs Witness, informs people about the
issue of Adventists and Jehovahs witnesses. Both religions were
originated from the Advent Movement in 1844 based off of the
time prophecies of William Miller (Seventh-day Adventists).
Yet from the Advent Movement, the two religions split apart by
having different beliefs. It was by the disagreements between
similar Adventist groups during Millers time that lead to the
formation of the Jehovahs Witnesses denomination. There are two
Son 3

beliefs that Jehovahs Witnesses do not accept, while the
Adventists do. The first belief that Adventists hold is that
there is a Trinity. This means that the Adventists believe that
there is one God that is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The
idea of three different beings, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
which are one. Jehovahs Witnesses believe that there is only
one God, Jehovah God. Another belief that is different between
Adventists and Jehovahs Witnesses is the Sabbath. Adventists
keep the seventh day Sabbath, which they believe is held from
sundown Friday until sundown Saturday. Jehovahs Witnesses meet
three times a week for worship. These two beliefs are the main
differences between Adventists and Jehovahs Witnesses. There
are other beliefs that Jehovahs Witnesses hold that are
different, like Jesus returned invisibly in 1914 or there is no
visible second coming, yet they are not as prominently known.
Adventists and Jehovahs Witnesses may look similar, but they
are different in their belief.
Between Adventists and Mormons, there are similarities, yet
when looking at their beliefs, they are completely different.
Some similarities Mormons have, found on the Mormons official
website, with Adventists are that they believe in prophecy, the
trinity, the Bible, and many others (Articles of Faith). One
belief that is different is that the Mormons regard the Book of
Son 4

Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ. Adventists believe
that Ellen G. Whites writings is the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The difference between these beliefs is that the Mormons believe
that the Book of Mormon is the Word of God, while Adventists
believe that Ellen G. Whites writings are inspired by God and
point to the Bible. Another belief is that the Book of Mormon is
a more accurate addition to the Bible. Mormons believe that the
Book of Mormon is equal with the Bible. They believe that the
Bible, The book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl
of Great Price are all sacred texts. Adventists believe that
the Bible is the only sacred text, known as tota sola scriptura.
The differences in belief between Mormons and Adventists are
large.
Adventists, Jehovahs Witnesses, and Mormons looks similar,
yet their beliefs are different. The activity of going door to
door, clothing style, and history shows that they are similar in
some ways. It is understandable to mistaken Adventists,
Jehovahs Witnesses and Mormons. Yet through the course of
knowing their individual beliefs, they are different and unique
from each other. This conflict of mistaking Adventists,
Jehovahs Witnesses and Mormons is seen today. Yet, to judge
them quickly by the clothes they wear, or going door to door is
not the best solution to figure out what religion they are.
Son 5

There must be a study in the religions to understand the
differences. Hopefully there will be a better understanding of
these three religions so that when students go out door to door
from any of these religions, they would not be quickly
categorized as Adventists, Jehovahs Witnesses or Mormons.
