Awormgearisusedwhenalargespeedreductionratioisrequiredbetweencrossedaxisshaftswhichdonot
intersect.Abasichelicalgearcanbeusedbutthepowerwhichcanbetransmittedislow.Awormdriveconsistsofa
largediameterwormwheelwithawormscrewmeshingwithteethontheperipheryofthewormwheel.Thewormis
similartoascrewandthewormwheelissimilartoasectionofanut.Asthewormisrotatedthewormwheeliscaused
torotateduetothescrewlikeactionoftheworm.Thesizeofthewormgearsetisgenerallybasedonthecentre
distancebetweenthewormandthewormwheel.
Ifthewormgearsaremachinedbasicallyascrossedhelicalgearstheresultisahighlystresspointcontact
gear. Howevernormallythewormwheeliscutwithaconcaveasopposedtoastraightwidth.Thisiscalledasingle
envelopewormgearset.Ifthewormismachinedwithaconcaveprofiletoeffectivelywraparoundthewormwheelthe
gearsetiscalledadoubleenvelopingwormgearsetandhasthehighestpowercapacityforthesize.Singleenveloping
gearsetsrequireaccuratealignmentoftheworm-wheeltoensurefull linetoothcontact.Doubleenvelopinggearsets
requireaccuratealignmentofboththewormandthewormwheeltoobtainmaximumfacecontact.
Thewormisshownwiththewormabovethewormwheel.Thegearsetcanalsobearrangedwiththewormbelowthe
wormwheel.Otheralignmentsareusedlessfrequently.
