Put this on your bucket list: Drive down Rosecrans in Point Loma, go west on Talbot and south on Gage. Look toward the bay on any of the streets off Gage and get ready for the best view in San Diego County, if not the world. The view from here is heart-stopping and different from any other along the entire California coastline. The upward slope of the peninsula of Point Loma is steep on the ocean side and the bay side. The view from Sunset Cliffs over the ocean, while other-worldly, is similar to other views up and down the California coast. The view of the bay, meanwhile, is incomparable. The hill is so steep that all the houses below you fall away as if you were alone in a nest at the top of the tallest tree, gazing down at boats in slips, boats sailing along in the bay, two yacht clubs, North Island, downtown San Diego and the hills of Mexico off in the distance. Trust me; its a bucket-list moment. The homes in Point Loma are no different. At every turn is another incredible house, some built at the turn of the century, some built when the peninsula became home to military brass during the war, and others are modern marvels of architecture and engineering. The home featured here is in the La Playa area of Point Loma, tucked A Vision of Paradise Can Be Seen in the Views of Point Loma down on the corner of Owen and San Antonio right on the bay. Its a magnifcent Spanish-style masterpiece built by Richard Requa in 1930. Its on a quarter-acre lot with no direct neighbors and panoramic views of the bay and boats. I spoke to the current owner, who has owned the home for 10 years, and her love of the place is evident in every sentence. She has meticulously renovated the home to modern standards, while maintaining the character of the past. You enter the property through a charming wooden gate that is attached to tall adobe-style walls that provide total privacy along the street side. The hand- carved, wooden front door opens to a whimsical, light-flled, inviting space. I asked the owner what her favorite room was, and with some indecision she said, The master bathroom. She found antique elevator doors on a trip to Paris and incorporated them into the new master bath as the shower surround. The soaking tub overlooks the bay, and no one could see in unless they were fying by in a hot air balloon. The views from the cozy patios, decks and lawn along the bayside are one of a kind. She will miss it, but she is on to another adventure. Meanwhile, as I drove away, my heart stopped again. On the corner of Owen and San Elijo streets is an 8,085-square-foot, stark white, Colonial Revival mansion set on a grassy, sloping 2.25-acre lot. Ive been around Point Loma a lot and have never noticed this house before. Turns out it was hidden by an overgrown landscape for most of its 86 years. According to my Point Loma-resident friend Teresa Amos Smullen, a young couple bought it in December of 2012 for $5.3 million. Public records show it was built in 1928 for the Treadwell family. The Treadwells sold it to the Fleet family, who sold it to the Ledford family, who lived there for 31 years. The new family is young and is renovating and improving every nook and cranny. The beat goes on. Email information on luxury real estate to Stephanie R. Glidden at sglidden@sdbj.com. LUXURY REAL ESTATE Stephanie R.
