R E L E A S E US Navy Selects Ion Tracks VaporTracer 2 to Fight Terrorism, Improve Force Protection Wilmington, May 20, 2002 -- Today, Ion Track Instruments (ITI) announced that it was awarded an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract by the U.S. Navy with an option to purchase over 1,400 VaporTracer 2 explosives detection and identification systems to secure Navy facilities and ships around the world. News Release The VaporTracer 2 units will be used to provide an additional level of security to identify potential high-risk threats. The implementation represents a significant investment in safety and security technology in response to the heightened threat of terrorism against U.S. interests. Under Department of Defense Directive 3224.3, responsibility for testing and evaluating explosive detection systems is assigned to the Secretary of the Navy for all branches of the U.S. Military Services. "Explosive detection equipment is an important tool in the fight against terrorism," said Nicholas P. Lakis, Logistics Manager for Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS)/Chief of Naval Operations N34 Force Protection Division. "The addition of this technology will continue to improve the Navy's overall force protection posture." The Navy announced that Ion Track Instruments is being awarded a $36 mi l l i on fi xed-pri ce, i ndefi ni te-del i very/i ndefi ni te-quanti ty contract for VaporTracer 2 handheld explosive and narcotics detectors for the U.S. Government. Funds in the approximate amount of $14 million will expire at the end of the current fiscal year and will purchase more than 600 units calling for immediate delivery. The contract was competitively procured by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, Crane, Ind. "ITI is, and has been, committed to developing the most advanced trace detection technology solutions to protect our country and the members of our Armed Forces," said Anthony Jenkins, President of ITI. "The U.S. Navy is clearly a leader in explosive detection research, and we are very pleased ITI's VaporTracer 2 was the only device selected after withstanding the rigorous scrutiny of the Navy's laboratory testing and field trials."
